Heavy-duty modular
plastic belts
T
he heavy-duty and extra-heavy-duty System Plast modular plastic belts provide a non-
skid, energy-efficient conveyor surface for moving heavy loadssuch as barrels, drums,
kegs and pallets. Offered as an alternative to chain and live-roller conveyor, the corrosion-
resistant belts handle loads up to 7,900 pounds per foot and come in five material types:
low-friction acetal, low-cost polypropylene, antistatic acetal, electrically conductive acetal
and electrically conductive polypropylene with a B1 rating for flame retardance. The belts
construction allows pusher bars to be attached, removed or replaced at any time without dis-
assembly. A patent-pending retention clip for the hinge pin can be installed or removed from
either side of the belt with simple tools. Emerson Industrial Automation, 314-553-2000,

Gantry-style linerless
labeling system
The ParcelMgr gantry-style,
top-apply labeling system
uses linerless print-cut-apply
labels to achieve throughput
rates up to 80 packages per
minute. Employing servo
and pneumatic technology
to apply the labels, the sys-
tem automatically adjusts
to accommodate in-line
package heights ranging
from 1 to 36 inches with-
out manual adjustments
or pre-sorting of packages
by height. In addition to
improving speed, the label
material provides up to
220% more labels per roll
than traditional die-cut sys-
tems. It also eliminates liner
waste and produces variable
label lengths on demand

Racks, shelving, mezzanines
Rack base isolation system dissipates 85% of seismic energy
Positioned between the columns of an upright frame and anchored to the floor,
the base isolation seismic system allows the rack structure to move during
an earthquake. The device dissipates up to 85% of the seismic
energy exerted on a pallet rack. Ideal for use in high
cube retail outlets, warehousing and storage facilities,
the attachment limits product loss and reduces the
risk of personal injury. It can be installed on new or
existing storage systems and increases the structures
resistance to forklift impacts. Easily moved during
warehouse reconfiguration, the device does not
impede rack loading and unloading. Ridg-U-Rak,
866-479-7225, www.ridgurak.com.
Enhance fire protection with rack accessory
For fire protection, the heavy-duty FlueKeeper HD pallet rack
accessory keeps pallets and their loads out of fire code required
transverse flue spaces. The device meets the 2012 standards set
by the International Fire Code stating that fire code officials can
require rack storage installations to be equipped with approved
devices to protect the required flue spaces. By maintaining an
open flue space, the accessory enables the activation of ceiling
sprinklers to deliver water in the case of an in-rack fire. DACS,

I
nstalled into new or existing rack, the SpeedCell storage system is a manual,
moveable storage system that provides carousel-like storage densities. The
system consists of highly durable, flame and water-retardant vertical textile
columns. Each column is suspended from the racking structure with a rail sys-
tem that allows them to move from side to side. The units hold 25 pounds per
shelf230 pounds per columnand can be set up in bays of five rows deep.
For access to items stored in the rear rows, the front rows slide aside on the rail
system. Holland Storage Systems, 616-772-2052, www.speedcell.net.
Make a mezzanine from storage cabinets
To maximize a facilitys usable storage footprint, the mini mezza-
nine is comprised of stacked, high-density storage cabinets. Ideal
for storing a range of productsincluding maintenance supplies,
repair parts and toolingthe system includes two rows of all-
steel storage cabinets, stairs and railings. Stacked back-to-back
on the first level, the cabinets are arranged with a single row on

Secure pallet drop areas
on structural platforms,
rack-supported pick modules
The rack-supported pivot gate secures
pallet drop areas in mezzanines and
pick modules to ensure OSHA and ANSI
safety compliance by using dual, inter-
connected gates. Manually operated, the
counterbalanced gate permits easy, ergo-
nomic operation. When the gate on the
ledge/loading side is open, pallets can be
loaded into the module while the gate
on the rear/picking side remains closed
to maintain a safe, controlled-access
area. To access the pallets, the operator
on the platform raises the rear-side gate
while the ledge-side gate closes to retain
a safe area. The system attaches directly
to existing rack components to maximize
space in the bay. It fits any brand of pal-
let rack in any configuration and may be
specified in multiple pallet widths and
depths, including multiple deep pallet
flow lanes. Mezzanine Safeti-Gates,

Electric pneumatic
tire forklifts
T
he EFG 2-5 series of three- and four-wheel electric counterbalanced pneumatic tire
forklifts are capable of operating up to two shifts on a single battery charge, the
vehicles include three-phase AC motors, regenerative braking and an ergonomic
operator compartment. To improve comfort through long shifts, two models incorpo-
rate low-effort electric power steering. The electronic control system delivers smooth
travel, dynamic reversing and pinpoint positioning with low energy consumption. Five
pre-programmable performance modes accommodate operators of varying skill sets.
To reduce maintenance costs and downtime, the trucks sport nearly wear-free brakes
and automatic parking brake, while highly sealed components block dust and moisture
from critical electronics. Options include enclosed operator cabins and joystick con-
trols. Jungheinrich, 877-543-6757, www.jungheinrich-lift.com.
Vehicles integrated scale enables seamless load weighing, movement
Offered for use on the suppliers 4,000- to 5,000-pound internal combustion, cushion tire
lift truck models, an integrated scale allows for simultaneous weighing and transportation
of loads. Ideal for warehouses and general shipping/receiving docks, the scale lets operators
quickly view, record or transfer legal-for-trade load weight information as the load is trans-
ported through the facility. A built-in side shifter increases operator efficiency and allows for
4 inches of movement each way without the operator having to leave their seat. The scale
incorporates certified electronic sensors integrated into a heavy-duty reinforced carriage to
withstand stress under heavy loads while protecting the scales sensors against impact. A
scale-mounted fork positioner option allows operators to quickly and precisely position the
forks without leaving their seat. Toyota Material Handling, 800-226-0009,
www.toyotaforklift.com.
New options increase control, speed and lift heights
Three new options have been added to the SC 5200 series of sit-down counterbalanced fork-
lifts. A 48-volt AC traction option allows the vehicle to reach speeds in excess of 9 miles per
hour, while fingertip control levers include directional control mounted in an adjustable arm-
rest. An optional quad mast reaches higher lift heights but collapses low to easily pass through
doorways. All models in the series include durable drive units, 36- or 48-volt AC motors,
hydraulic controllers, and a heavy-duty, 0.75-inch steel plate truck frame with I-beam mast
rails that resist bending and twisting. Depending on the model, capacities range from 3,000
to 4,000 pounds. Other features include on-demand steering that lowers noise levels, a single
hydraulic motor designed for improved efficiency, and faster lift speeds for increased produc-
tivity. A full-motor braking system requires less maintenance than traditional friction brakes.

MINI CASE HISTORY
By Josh Bond, Associate Editor
On-demand printing reduces
travel time, boosts accuracy
S
chwarz Supply Source supplies packaging materials and printed
products across all aspects of a customers supply chain, from
procurement, warehousing and fulfillment to logistics, budget-
ing and value-added services. The companys three North American
DCs have a combined storage capacity of more than 1.6 million
square feet and more than 215 dock doors. By deploying on-demand
printers on mobile powered workstations (Newcastle Systems, new-
castlesys.com), workers now make fewer trips between the office and
the dock doors.
Before turning to the new mobile workstations, the company
pre-printed the in-bound paperwork for all shipments, including
pallet labels to identify the item and its storage location. Typically,
a shipment would consist of multiple pallets of various items, and
the receiving clerk would have a stack of labels to apply to the
various pallets.
According to George Guzman, director of distribution technology
for Schwarz, clerks often ended up with too many or too few labels.
If we ended up with too many, we were concerned that we did not
receive the complete order, Guzman says. If we ended up with too
few, we were concerned the clerk put the wrong label on the wrong
item. Both instances slowed production as the clerk went to the
office to sort it out and print additional labels. Even when the clerk
had the right quantity of labels, there was concern that the correct
label was being applied to the correct pallet.
Guzman tried a portable, battery-operated belt printer, and
quickly determined that a faster, larger volume mobile printer was
required. They chose a bar code printer with a powered mobile
workstation, noting its affordability, battery life, ruggedness and
ergonomics. Clerks now print the labels on-demand, where and
when they need them.
I had some experience with powered carts used in healthcare,
says Guzman. Most were either too small because they were
designed for laptop computers or too large because they would be
holding PCs with flat panel monitors, baskets, mouse pad holders and
such. This workstation was just the right fit for our needsa no non-
sense piece of equipment.
The mobile workstation design houses a bar code printer, label stor-
age, a bar code scanner and desktop work area. The workstation can be moved to the
exact location where the work needs to be done. According to Guzman, Schwartz has
eliminated the need for employees to walk to the office for missing labels.
We are also much more confident that the correct label is being placed on the
correct pallet and item, since we are only printing the specific label needed, says
Guzman. Therefore we have improved inventory accuracy and increased the ware-
house associates productivity. Weve come to rely on the workstations the same way
we rely on our forklifts and pallet jacks.
The new workstations are now used for receiving and labeling in-bound pallets on
the receiving docks as well as going up and down each aisle in the warehouse to locate
and re-label stock, shelves, or racking.

AGVs, mobile robots
Small AGV/AGC vehicles can
be configured in multiple ways
A family of small, low-profile automatic
guided vehicles and carts uses virtual
path navigation without following
a magnetic or optical tape mounted
on the floor. As tape-free vehicles,
the units follow a CAD map in their
memory, eliminating path mainte-
nance. The virtual path is created from
a simple PC program and can be eas-
ily rerouted or altered in unlimited
lengths, complexities and levels of con-
trol to accommodate changing business
needs. Compact, the units can be used
to transport load platform or can be
equipped with powered load decks to
support both materials handling and
assembly line applications. Savant

AGV/forklift combo loads over-the-road trailers
Combining a standard, off-the-shelf forklift with automatic opera-
tion, the hybrid AGV provides trailer loading for manufacturing
and distribution centers. The system uses advanced control and
a sensor package that enables the vehicle to see and navigate in
over-the-road trailers and deep floor stacks. The AGVs efficiently
move pallet loads of 3,500 and 5,500 pounds to heights up to
30 feet. They interface with deep-lane floor stacking, push-back
rack, drive-in rack and standard racking. Standard features include
industrial lead-acid batteries, laser navigation, advanced laser safe-
ty systems, graphical touchscreen and wireless communications.
For additional customization, optional components and func-
tionssuch as RFID readers, bar code scanners, 3D camera tech-
nology, robotic battery exchange system, automatic battery charg-
ing, side-shift and tiltmay be specified. Egemin Automation,

Adapt very narrow aisle forklifts into AGVs
For very narrow aisle warehouses, the second generation of FlexVNA
automatic guided vehicles retrofits into existing rack systems or new
automated storage systems. The system may be applied to existing
manual fork truck equipment or to an automated VNA solution.
Enhancements include a slimmer profile, 360-degree scanner detec-
tion, multiple turret options for
improved accuracy and reliabil-
ity, and a standard, off-the-shelf
WMS interface. To manage AGV
traffic, the systems manage-
ment configurator requires no
custom software, while mainte-
nance and system monitoring
tools are included in the single,
scalable software. The software
also incorporates a rack map
configurator to determine the
exact location in a rack structure
for an AGV to deliver and pick a

AGV battery can be charged in unit
The heavy-duty model BST undercarriage AGV tug-
ger operates for a full 8-hour shift without a bat-
tery recharge or exchange. As the sixth and newest
model in the suppliers AGV line, the unit moves
loads weighing up to 2,000 pounds. The vehicle
drives under a stationary cart positioned on the
magnetic tape guidepath, extends a tow pin into
the carts receiver catch, and moves it to a pro-
grammed destination. It then retracts the tow pin,
leaving the cart for its intended purpose and moves
on to service another cart. The AGV interfaces with
multiple varieties of un-powered carts equipped
with the proper receiver hitch. Features include
an extra large battery compartment and a battery
charging system with retractable cords on wind-up
reels, enabling charging to occur without removing
the battery from the AGV. For safety, the vehicle
has an obstacle sensor with seven sensing areas,
a bumper with emergency stop, a warning/status

Increase order
selection productivity
by 40% with picker-
supporting AGV
To improve current ware-
house operation and increase
order selection productivity
up to 40%, the AGVPick trav-
els autonomously to support a
picker. The system interfaces
with the warehouse manage-
ment system to send the AGV
to meet the picker at the first pick location. The picker places the
case on the order pallet on the AGV, which then navigates automati-
cally to the next pick location. To minimize travel and ease place-
ment of picks, the AGV self-positions to the most ergonomic loca-
tion, and the picker walks behind the vehicle instead of driving. This
eliminates non-value added movement in-and-out of a cab or front
to back of a vehicle. When the pick assignment is nearly complete,
the system deploys a new AGVPick vehicle with empty pallets to the
picker for the next customer order. The system is built upon a Class
III electric pallet truck and features laser safety bumpers that initi-
ate slowdown or stop should the vehicle approach an obstruction.

AGVs @
AGV follows both oor-based and
laser-based guidance technologies
For maximum facility flexibility, a line of automatic guided vehicles can automat-
ically switch its navigation methodology to follow either floor guidance technolo-
gies (such as tape, wire or gyro) or laser guidance. This allows an AGV to travel in
areas where laser targets cannot be mounted or seen by the AGV due to facility
restraints, such as areas where lines of sight to and from the vehicle are restricted.
The solution makes the systems ideal for facilities with materials stacked in high
columns or tight areas around machinery where no line of sight is possible.

Washdown-friendly
cleanroom doors decrease
energy loss
Featuring a one-piece radial header
machined from a solid block of plastic,
FasTrax cleanroom doors meet both
USDA and FDA standards for cleaning
practices. The door is made of smooth
polypropylene fabric, which provides
higher resistance to acids and bases and
a lower water absorption rate than vinyl
and urethane. The fabric also makes the
door highly resistant to mold and easy
to wash down, even with harsh clean-
ing chemicals. To minimize air intrusion
while maximizing productivity, the door
rolls up at speeds of 100 inches per sec-
ond. If bumped or impacted by a forklift,
the door reconfigures itself back onto its
track. Additionally, the doors side frames,
drive system and controls are all wash-
down rated. Rite-Hite Doors, 888-841-

Buckhorn

introduces collapsible 60-gallon drum

Innovative container offers 25% better cube utilization
Buckhorn Inc. will be exhibiting its new col-
lapsible 60-gallon plastic drum at ProMat.
The drums unique rectangular design allows
four assembled drums to interlock and cube
a 48 x 40 pallet, stacking up to five pallet
loads high in storage. It has a 24 x 20 x
40 footprint, and the sidewalls are hinged
in the center for a one-way inward fold,
allowing the drum to fold flat in seconds.
Because of its smaller footprint and greater
capacity, Buckhorns 60-gallon drum offers
25% better cube utilization than the stan-
dard 55-gallon alternatives currently on the
market. Additionally, 480 collapsed drums fit in a 53 truck
for a superior 3:1 nesting ratio.
