When Manichaeism arrived in Tang China from Persia it was

y known as Monijiao or "the Mani religion."
this foreign religion was also called Mingjiao or he
bright religion ," the term of choice after Emperor Wuzong (reigned
841-846) organized a campaign against it. Scholars proposed
other names , among which were Sulinfa and Sulinjiao

or "the religion of Babylon," a reference to the birthplace

of Mani , the founder of Manichaeism. Other titles , such as the

Song sobriquet chicai shimo or "vegetarian demon

worshippers ," were tossed indiscrimintely at anything officials

thought smelled of popular religion. Some religions did absorb

elements of Manichaen belief without undergoing a profound

transformation , among them Erhuizi Mounijiao

Siguo Jingangchan and Jiedizhai all from

the Song , and Mingzunjiao of the Ming. The author ends

by examining the hypothesis that Chinese Manichaeans in Fujian

()

Province adopted the name Shishifa or "the way of Shi ,

" for their group , determining that this error arose out of a
misreading of the relevant original documents.
