Homework: Topic9: Electromagnetic Induction [Chap. 20] Explanation: Problems are divided into two groups.

Numbers in parentheses, e.g. (10) are Exercises. Relatively simple applications of basic definitions and basic laws. These are for student practice. Numbers in brackets, e.g. [10], are assigned problems. These are problems similar in level of difficulty to test problems. Numbers in curly brackets, e.g. {10} are challenging problems. Exercises:
(1) In the figure a rod with length l = 0.40 m moves in a magnetic field with magnitude B = 1.20 T. The emf induced in the moving rod is 3.60 V. a) What is the speed of the rod? b) Which end of the rod is +? c) If the total circuit resistance is 0.90 , what is the induced current? d) What force (magnitude & direction) does the field exert on the rod as a result of this current? (2) A conducting rod AB in the figure makes contact with the metal rails CA and DB. The apparatus is in a uniform magnetic field of 0.50 T, perpendicular to the plane of the diagram. a) Find the magnitude of the emf induced in the rod when it is moving toward the right with a speed of 8.00 m/s. b) In what direction does current flow in the rod? c) If the resistance of the circuit ABCD is 0.20 (assumed to be constant) find the force (magnitude & direction) required to keep the rod moving to the right with a constant speed of 8.00 m/s. (3) A single loop of wire, with an area of 0.90 m2, is in a region of uniform magnetic field. The magnetic field has an initial value of 3.80 T and is decreasing at a constant rate of 0.190 T/s. If the loop has a resistance of 0.60 , what is the current induced in the loop? Ans. 0.0285 A (4) A coil with 800 turns enclosing an area of 20 cm2 is rotated from a position where its plane is perpendicular to the earths magnetic field to one where its plane is parallel to the field in 0.02 s. What average emf is induced if the earths magnetic field is 6.0 x 10-5 T? Ans. 4.8 x 10-3 V

(5) A flat, square coil with 15 turns has sides of length 0.120 m. The coil rotates in a magnetic field of 0.0250 T. a) What is the angular velocity of the coil if the maximum emf produced is 20.0 V? b) What is the average emf at this angular velocity? Ans. a) 3.70 rad/s; b) 0

(6) A cardboard tube is wound with two windings of insulated wire that are wound in the opposite directions, as shown in the figure. Terminals a and b may be connected to a battery through a reversing switch. State whether the induced current in the resistor R is from left to right or from right to left in the following circumstances a) the current in winding A is from a to b and is increasing; b) the current is from b to a and is decreasing; c) the current is from b to a ands is increasing.

[1] A square loop of wire with resistance R is moving with a speed v0 toward a region of constant magnetic field. Assume no forces act on the loop while it is outside the magnetic field. a) As the loop enters the field there is an Emf induced. Determine its direction; the direction of the induced current & hence the direction of the force exerted on the loop. b) What will happen to the speed of the loop as a result of the force determined in (a)? c) Repeat (a) & (b) for the case where the loop is leaving the field. d) What is the force acting while the loop is entirely within the field? [2] A closely wound search coil has an area of 4.00 cm2, 160 turns, and a resistance of 50 . It is connected to a charge-measuring instrument whose resistance is 30 . When the coil is rotated quickly from a position parallel to a uniform magnetic field to one perpendicular to the field, the instrument indicates a charge of 9.00 x 10-5 C. What is the magnitude of the field? Ans. 0.112 T

[3] The magnetic field B at all points within the colored circle of the figure has an initial magnitude of 0.80 T. It is directed into the plane of the diagram and is decreasing at the rate of 0.05 T/s. a) What is the shape of the field lines of the induced En field in the figure within the colored circle. b) What are the magnitude & direction of this field at any point on the circular conducting ring with radius 0.10 m? c) What is the current in the ring if its resistance is 2.0 ? d) What is the potential difference between points a and b of the ring? e) If the ring is cut at some point and the ends are separated slightly, what will be the potential difference between the ends?

[5] The rectangular loop in the figure, with an area A and resistance R, rotates at uniform angular velocity about the yaxis. Sketch graphs of the following quantities, as functions of time (Let t=0 for the position shown.) a) the flux through the loop. b) the rate of change of the flux /t. c) the induced Emf in the loop. d) The torque needed to keep the loop rotating at constant angular velocity.

{6} A metal bar with length l , mass m, and resistance R is placed on frictionless metal rails that are inclined at an angle above the horizontal. The rails have negligible resistance. There is a uniform magnetic field B directed downward. The bar is released from rest and slides down the rails. a) Is the direction of the induced current in the rod from a to b or from b to a? b) What is the terminal speed of the bar? c) What is the induced current in the bar when the terminal speed has been reached? d) After the terminal speed has been reached, at what rate is electrical energy being converted into heat in the resistance of the bar? e) After the terminal speed has been reached, at what rate is work being done on the bar by gravity?
