(b) Explain the history of road development plans in India briefly bringing out their salient features. (a) Through the analysis of various forces acting on a vehicle moving on a horizontal curve, explain how the super elevation can counter the centrifugal force. (b) A vertical summit curve is formed when an ascending gradient of 1 in 25 meets a descending gradient of 1 in 40. The curve is to be designed for an overtaking sight distance required for a design speed of 80 km/h. The rate of acceleration during overtaking is 1.5 km/h/second. Derive an expression for SSD for a road section where the design speed is V km/h and the coefficient of longitudinal friction is f. (b) Find the stopping sight distance for a design speed of 65 km/h. Consider the reaction time of the driver as 2.5 seconds and the friction coefficient as 0.30. What will be the SSD if an upward gradient of 3 percent is introduced at that location? How are the road accident classified? What kind of traffic movements are involved in each type? Explain with the help of neat sketches. Explain the classification of traffic signs. (b) The runway gradation map indicates that there is a rising gradient of 2.0 percent meeting a falling gradient of 0.70 percent. There is again and upgrade of 0.5 percent.
