Student-Friendly Standards I will be able to describe one of the holidays and why people celebrate it.

E. Procedure: 1. Refer to the notes of Get Set To Read for each holiday on TE pgs. 332-338 As you introduce each holiday one at a time, have the students read the title of each lesson and ask what they know about the holiday and what they would like to find out. Introduce the vocabulary for each holiday.

2. As a class, read about each holiday p. 332-338, stopping to ask questions as indicated in the margins of the TE. 3. Students should record on the chart calendar the month each holiday is celebrated as they read. 4. Ask questions listed in the margins of the TE as an ongoing check for understanding. Focus on questions about citizenship and culture for each section.

5. CLOSURE: Ask & discuss What are some reasons it is important to Americans to celebrate national, state, and religious holidays? F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? Activity: The students will individually pick one of the activities listed in the Activity section of each holiday, for their favorite holiday and complete. Students will write a reflection on why and how the holiday is celebrated. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. I will use the Performance Task Rubrics for each section to assess students understanding. Students must identify the holiday they chose and why it is celebrate in their reflection. G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? The children are familiar with most of these holidays and have some background knowledge that will be very useful. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? I think the hardest part of this lesson will be guiding their choses of activities quickly. I know my students fairly well. They will love the diversity and challenge of this work. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? I think a great extension of this lesson is having them choose another holiday not listed, research it on their own, and report to the class their findings. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? For students having difficulty grasping the concepts of this lesson, I would have them do one of the activities as a group with me modeling the steps of the activity. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? Each of these lessons was too short to give each day but Im unsure if all of them can be introduced in one-hour session. This lesson might be good to split up in two days; day one introduce all the holidays, day two participate in the activities. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? As I was writing this lesson, the idea that it should be split into two days kept nagging at me. I chose to keep it one day and see how much time it takes.
