This lesson uses resources found on the Internet and pages 6-17 in the Nevada (From Sea to Shining Sea) book. B. Target Population: Grade Level: 4th Grade Skill Level: Students at all learning levels Grouping: Whole group discussion, group work and individual assessment C. Materials: Social Studies Journals Nevada (From Sea to Shining Sea) book Physical/Human Features pictures Poster boards for each group

D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards o G5.4.3 Construct a map of Nevada displaying human and physical features.

Student-Friendly Standards I can make a map of Nevada that shows human and physical features.

E. Procedure: 1. First I will review in a guided discussion the lesson we learned yesterday about physical and human features of Nevada. As a class we will go over the definitions and make a two-column list on the board of human and physical features. 2. Next I will explain to the class that today they are going to be working in groups to find out information on a particular human or physical feature given to them. They will be able to use any books about Nevada in the classroom or the Internet. They will have to have at least 4 facts about the feature; once the group has their four facts they can come to me for the instructions on what to do next. 3. I will explain to the students that now they are going to create a poster board that has a picture of the feature they were given, a title of what the feature is and the facts that they found about the feature. Once the students have completed their poster board they will share it with the whole class. 4. CLOSURE: After putting all the supplies away we will come back to a whole class discussion in which they can share something new they learned about the feature they

researched. We will conclude with a brief overview of which features were physical and which features were human. F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? I will use the whole class discussion and the poster boards to measure understanding. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. I will know whether students understand the concepts from the lesson by grading their poster boards and evaluating their participation in the whole group discussion. Depending on their grades and participation I will be able to determine whether they understood or not. G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think the easiest part of the lesson will be explaining the instructions to the students. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? I think the most difficult part will be teaching the students how to find the information needed to create their poster boards. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? I would extend this lesson by having a short quiz about the different human and physical features in Nevada. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? If a student doesnt grasp the concept I will pair them with a higher-level student. I will also check in on them as they are working on the activity. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? I may need to have the students present their projects at a later time if we dont have enough time. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The most difficult part of writing this lesson was coming up with an extension activity.
