Slab box/poster relief overview

10/24/12 PowerPoint presentation going over the concept and goal of the project Students will have a note sheet to complete during the PowerPoint Brian storming Think/Pair/Share between students at their tables o Share thoughts with class to have a mass brain storming session Students must bring a picture of the movie poster that they will be inspired from

10/25/12 Students will be rolling out 2 slabs at a measurement of 8x6 and thick. o To do this, students need to stack 2 slats (1/4) thick each on each side of their wedged clay so to create their slabs. o 2 are rolled out so that there is a backup slab incase students carve through their first slab after a few days. o Have students keep one strip of scrap clay slab so that they can practice using the loop tools on Monday. Students will need to sketch out 3 different versions of their original poster concept today and have one approved by teacher to move on to working with clay. Students need to ensure that slabs are wrapped lightly so that they may stiffen up so that they will be easier to carve.

10/26/12 3 poster concepts due today for teacher approval o Concepts have to be different than commercially created movie poster. PowerPoint given on perspective and forced perspective Students should being lightly etching out their designs on one of their 8x6 slabs. o Only light etching can be done. Students will need to clearly lay out their plan before carving out clay because once clay is removed it cannot be added back! Etching lines need to be clean and crisp to allow for easier carving for intaglio

10/29/12 All student should be done with their sketches today Give tool demonstration today o How to use loop tools to precisely remove clay against guidelines o Removing small layers at a time o Different loop tools allow for different effects in clay o Loop tools do not need to be used straight on, experiment with different angles to get into tight angles Go over thickness of clay slab and that students should not go past in the clay when carving

This protects from going too far and breaking through the back of the slab, or creating weak spots in the clay Students should practice with their loop tools on the scrap clay they saved from last Thursday.

10/30/12 Students will begin creating their intaglio carvings into their slabs based on their outlines Today is the last day to start over their etchings or carving by using emergency slabs. o This will allow students to not fall behind if they have ruined their original slab Reminder that students need to turn in their perfect sphere projects tomorrow by the end of art club

10/31/12 Demonstration on how to add clay to students slab in order to create high relief o Attention paid to the proportion of the objects and the perspective that wants to be achieved o Slipping and scoring, blending edges smooth o Better idea to add more than needed so that students can carve away to the right perspective Easier to take away clay then adding it Review of size and angle of perspective during the demonstration Students should be working on carving their intaglio and then adding their high relief clay. Perfect spheres do today on the greenware shelf by the end of Art club

11/01/12 Full work day for students. o Should be working on intaglio carving, and adding relief Students will need to roll out one 6.5x8.5 slab, and two 1x6 slabs, and two 1x8 slabs. All these slabs should be thick (one slat), these will form the walls of the slab box o Slabs should be wrapped to harden slightly for next Monday SOFA field trip tomorrow

11/02/12 SOFA field trip today Students not attending field trip need to be working on their intaglio carvings or beginning to start adding clay for high relief If done with intaglio portion of projects students should be cleaning and smoothing their pieces.

11/05/12 Demonstration on how to cut opening in top slab (6.5x8.5 slab) o Should use 7x5 template to cut out opening. Allows for boarders must be measured for accuracy

Demonstration on attaching slaps to intaglio and high relief slab. o Slipping and scoring side slabs first all edges need to be blended inside and outside o Attach top slab with cut out last. Students should be working on relief and cleaning up their clay o Smoothing, picking boogers, removing access clay, leveling flat areas

11/06/12 Student work day o Continuing to clean up clay: smoothing, leveling, removing access clay o Finishing up relief detail

11/07/12 Student should cut out their top slab opening using template o Can begin working on outer designs o Movie name, actors, catch phrase. 3 days left to work, every student should be done adding intaglio carvings and high relief at this point and cleaning up their clay.

11/08/12 All students should be cutting out their slab tops and adding outer designs to this slab Students should begin attaching slab sides and top today o Slabs should be rigid so that they keep their shape Use Blow-dryer if needed to stiffen slabs o Sides first 1x8 slabs and 1x6 slabs o Top goes on last to showcase intaglio and relief Tomorrow is the last day to work in class on this project

11/09/12 Last day to work on Slab project in class All slab boxes should be under construction today o Sides first 1x8 slabs and 1x6 slabs o Top goes on last to showcase intaglio and relief Ensure that edges are being blended correctly o No seams at the joints o Lid and sides should be level No bending or sinking
