A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This social studies lesson is designed for 1st grade students to learn why people move from one place to another and about the things people bring with them when they move from a different country. This lesson uses the 1st Grade Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook School and Family (p. 60-63). B. Target Population: Grade Level: 1st grade Skill Level: students at all learning levels Grouping: whole group reading, independent for art activity and assessment C. Materials: Houghton Mifflin 1st Grade Social Studies Book: School and Family (p. 60-63) Construction paper and pencils Glue sticks Scissors Old magazines and newspapers Journals D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards o G7.1.2 Explain that some people live in locations other than where they were born. G7.1.2A Discuss that some people live in locations other than where they were born.

Student-Friendly Standards I can explain and disucss why people move and what they take with them.

E. Procedure: 1. Refer to notes on TE 60 Get Set to Read. Call students attention to the map on p. 60. Have students trace with their finger the route from Brazil to U.S. and explain that this was the route a family took. Ask students if they have lived anywhere else besides Las Vegas. Introduce vocabulary (country).

2. Teacher reads aloud p. 60-63 while students follow along, stopping to ask questions as indicated in the margins of the TE.

3. Ask questions listed in the margins of the TE as an ongoing check for understanding. Focus on these questions: (TE 61)Why do people move? Do you know someone who moved here from a different country? (TE 62) What new things do people bring to a community?

4. Do art activity What I Would Take on TE 62. 5. CLOSURE: Discuss the question, Why do people move from one place to another? listed in the Review/Assess section of TE 63. F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? Write a journal entry: How would you feel if you moved to a new country? Draw a picture to go with the journal entry. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. Students must explain and discuss that some people live in locations other than where they were born. Writing a journal entry about how they would feel if they moved to a new country will show that they understand that people dont always stay in the same place as they were born. G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I think it will all be pretty easy to teach, but especially step 2 in the procedures because the discussion questions are clearly spelled out in the TE. 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? The part that might be the most difficult for the students to understand is the vocabulary word country because sometimes its hard for 1st graders to grasp the bigger picture. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? As an extension to this lesson, if there was a student in my class that had moved, or had parents that had moved from a different country, I would invite them to come and talk about their move and things that they brought with them from their country. I might also ask them to bring a food item from their country for the students to sample. If I did not have such a student, I would use Extend Lesson 5 (p. 64-65) Moving Then and Now. 4. What can you do for students who dont grasp the concepts?

For students who struggle with the concepts in this lesson, I would use the Reteach Mini-Lesson on the bottom of TE 63. We would work together to make a graphic organizer or Why People Move and What New People Bring. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? The only thing I might change in this lesson is possibly starting it off with a picture book about moving like Katie Woo Moving Day by Fran Manushkin to introduce the topic. I dont think anything else needs to be changed in this lesson. I think it is a lesson most, if not all, students will be able to relate to because people move often, especially in Las Vegas. If a student has never moved, its very likely that he/she knows someone who has. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part? The most difficult part of this lesson plan was the assessment because I dont think the TE had anything that would adequately assess if the objectives had been met. I considered using the Study Guide/Homework worksheet, but then decided that it wouldnt be a good assessment tool.
