MANUAL FOR AUTOMATIC AUTOTRANSFORMER STARTER The Autotransformer starter supplied is meant for starting and running of 380V

3 phase 50HZ induction motor, along with necessary protection and local remote selection facility. At the time starting , a reduced voltage is applied to the motor for a predetermined time after which full voltage is applied to the motor employing CLOSED TRANSITION CHANGE OVER by KORNDROFFER method. Operation in remote mode is through Local pushbutton station. SEQUENCE OF OPERATION When the starter is initiated through pushbutton, the star contactor V energises and forms the star point of the autotransformer. Transformer contactor U also energises and provides primary supply to autotransformer. The timer T1 also enegises simultaneously The tap voltage (50%, 65% & 80% chosen through tap changing links) is then impressed on the outgoing terminals and the motor starts running in low voltage. Upon completion of the preset time interval, the timer T1 cuts off star contactor V. When the star contactor is fully opened, main contactor W energises and provide full voltage to the motor. The timer T2 also enegises simultaneously. Upon completion of the preset time interval, the timer T2 cuts off transformer contactor U. Now, the motor runs at rated voltage.

PROTECTION PROVIDED The following protective device are provided in the starter: 1) OVER LOAD PROTECTION : A CT operated bimetallic overload relay is provided to protect the motor against overloads. The overload relay has built in single phasing feature. 2) UNDERVOLTAGE PROTECTION : A adjustable under and over voltage protection relay is provided to prevent operation of the starter at any voltage less or more than the preset value. 3) SINGLE PHASING PREVENTOR : A current operated SPP operating on the basis of negative phase sequence component is provided to protect the motor in the event of phase failure. 4) THERMOSTAT : A bimetallic thermostat is provided to the starter if the autotransformer winding temperature exceeds permissible limit. RECOMMANDED SETTINGS UNDER VOLTAGE : 85% OVER VOLTAGE TIMER : 105%

PRECAUTION TO BE TAKEN DURING COMMISSIONING: 1) Ensure that all packing materials are removed and that all components are free from dust and moisture. 2) Ensure that the autotransformer is preheated with high wattage incandescent lamp before filling with oil. 3) Ensure that filtered and preheated standard grade transformer oil is filled in the tank up to the recommended level. 4) Ensure that all electrical and mechanical connections/joints are properly tightened. 5) Ensure that the insulation value is good enough before providing power supply to the starter. DOS AND DO NOTS DOS : 1) Always maintain the oil level in the transformer tank up to the recommended level. 2) Always keep the doors fully closed when the starter is in operation. 3) From time to time, keep cleaning the power contacts of all contacts with carbon tetrachloride solution. DO NOTS : 1) Do not exceed 4 equally spaced or 2 hot starts per hour. 2) Do not set the timer beyond 20 seconds. 3) Do not replace HRC cartridge fuses with rewirable fuses. 4) Do not keep the autotransformer taps at different percentages. 5) Do not switch on the starter with out the arc chute in all contactors.
