A. Summary of the Lesson Plan: This lesson plan is designed to help 3rd grade students learn about communities. The students will have time to finish presenting their projects before we read about communities. B. Target Population: Grade Level: 3rd grade Skill Level: At grade level Grouping: Group for presentations, whole-class for reading. Individual for doing the online activity. C. Materials: Houghton Mifflin Social Studies textbook entitled Communities Copies of the Reading Skill and Strategy print-out found on page 6 of the Unit Resources Computers with internet access

D. Objectives: o NV State Social Studies Standards o G5.3.1 Identify and use cardinal directions on a compass rose to locate places on a map. G6.3.2 Identify characteristics of neighborhoods and communities, i.e., physical geographical differences, land use, population density.

Student-Friendly Standards The students will be able to identify and use cardinal directions on a compass rose to locate places on a map. I can identify what characteristics define neighborhoods and communities.

E. Procedure: 1. Allow the students time to finish their presentations (no more than twenty minutes). 2. Discuss how every place is a community. Explain that even the cities they made up are a community and that there are different ways to describe communities. 3. Together as a class, read pages 16-19 of the student edition textbook. We will stop when appropriate to discuss the ideas of urban areas and rural areas.

4. Allow the students time to do the online activity found at http://www.eduplace.com/kids/socsci/books/applications/imaps/maps/g3_u1/, which is an interactive map that helps explain the differences between rural, urban, and suburban communities. 5. CLOSURE: Discuss, as a class, the differences between urban, rural, and suburban areas. F. Assessment: What will you use to measure student understanding? I will measure student understanding by sending home a worksheet for the students to complete. Explain how you will know students understand the concepts from the lesson. If the students have accurately completed the worksheet, they will understand the difference between rural areas and urban areas. G. Reflection: 1. Which part of the lesson do you think will be the easiest for you to teach? I dont think any one part will be easier than another (other than them presenting). 2. Which part will be most challenging for you to teach? The most challenging part would probably be trying to clarify the differences between rural, urban, and suburban. 3. How will you follow up or extend this lesson? I will follow up this lesson plan by reading the Extended Lesson plan section on pages twenty and twenty-one of the student edition. 4. What will you do for students who dont grasp the concepts? The students who dont grasp the concepts can ask questions so that I might clarify them, or they can ask questions to their group. They can also, with parental supervision, revisit the website mentioned above. 5. Which part of the lesson, if any, do you think might need to change? I might need to change the position of this lesson plan in the unit. The abrupt change from the City Map presentations to this lesson plan seems like it could produce problems in student understanding. 6. When you were writing this lesson plan, what was the most difficult part?

The most difficult part was trying to decide where to fit this lesson into the unit. It is not necessarily at its most ideal position, but I couldnt really figure out a place for it that would be much better.
