Homework: Sibelius Basics Part 3

How to use these notes

In addition to the notes youve downloaded for previous sessions, you should also have downloaded the following from the website: Notes Sibelius Basics Online Part 3 Homework Sibelius Basics Online Part 3 (this document) The Ash Grove Sibelius score (ensure you download the correct version)

Where we left off

By the end of session 2, we did the following to our Row, Row, Row Your Boat score: Added two new staves (2 Voices) and copied the Voice 1 part into Voice 2 and 3 Added lyrics Filtered lyrics and copied them to the Voice 2 and 3 staves Discussed note entry with a MIDI keyboard (Step-time and Flexi-time) Added a guitar stave, entered chords and chord symbols

We ran out of time to cover Repeats, Transposition and Score Tidy Up in Session 2, but we covered those first in Session 3 so those homework tasks appear here again.

Add repeat barlines

Add in a Start Repeat at the beginning of bar 1 (just after the anacrusis) Add in an End Repeat at the end of bar 24

See Notes part 1 & 2 page 12, Barlines: repeats, double, final and invisible

Copy and paste again

This time, well copy and paste the entire first-time through of the round (all parts) into bar 25, then well transpose it into a new key. Select bar 5 in Voice 1 Shift-click in bar 16 in Clarinet 2 (all the parts will be selected for the entire section) Navigate to bar 25 (press the End key one or two times) Hold down Alt (Opt on Mac) and click in bar 25 in the Voice 1 part

Transpose
Next well transpose the new section that starts at bar 25. System Selection First, we need to make a system selection. When you make a System selection, the selected part of your score will have a purple box around it, instead of a blue box. There are a couple of ways to do this, but the quickest one is this: Hold down Control (Command on Mac) and click in any instrument in bar 25. You should have a purple box around all of the instruments in that bar Navigate to bar 36 (press the End key until you can see bar 36) Hold down Control and Shift (Command and Shift on Mac) and click in bar 36 The purple box should now extend around all of the instruments in bars 25-36 Press Shift+T to open the Transpose dialogue You can choose to transpose by key, or by interval Choose the right settings to transpose up by one tone, into E major (terrible change for the clarinets!!) Make sure all of the boxes under Options are checked (Transpose key signatures and so on) Click OK

Transpose the selected music

See Notes part 3 page 3, Transposing music

Tidy up the score

Delete extra bars Delete the extra unnecessary bars at the end of the last section in Voice 1 and 2 Create an ending Add two new bars at the end (press Ctrl+B or Command+B twice) Create a tied E chord that fills the final two bars. The tie is on Sibeliuss Keypad its equivalent to the Enter key on your numeric keyboard. Select the first bar and then press the tie button to tie the first chord/note to the second one. Delete the notes/ lyrics in bars 33-36 in Voice 1 (where the melody starts again) Delete the notes lyrics in bars 35-36 in Voice 2 (where the melody starts again)

Layout and formatting basics

Page view Go back to page view Zoom out and take a look at your score overall Make note of any collisions and using the guidelines in Notes Part 3, try to resolve any formatting and layout issues.

Midnight Music www.midnightmusic.com.au

My approach to this score It may be a help to know how I approached the formatting of this score. Here are the general steps I followed: First, I hid the empty staves Checked whether there were collisions and whether the score was clear to read Made the stave size smaller to create more space and reduce the number of pages. The stave size was originally 7.0. I ended up reducing it to 6.5mm Check whether the music ends at the bottom of the last page (it didnt) Forced a bar or two down on to the next system to spread out the music at the end

See Notes part 3 page 4 & 5, Layout and formatting

Viewing, printing and formatting parts

Viewing parts View the Clarinet 2 part: In Sibelius 6, click on the drop-down menu in the centre of the toolbar and choose Clarinet 2 In Sibelius 7, click on the + sign at top right and choose Clarinet 2

Formatting parts Check formatting and make changes if necessary, using the same skills you learnt to format the full score. Many parts require little or no formatting at all. Any differences between the part and the score are marked orange. If youd like to practice viewing and formatting parts, select another one or two and run through the same process Create a new part Create a new part that includes both Clarinet staves. Once youve done that, you can save and close this score. See Notes part 3 page 6, Parts

All about plugins (and making your life easier!)

Youll need to open the Ash Grove score which you should have downloaded from the Midnight Music website. During Session 3 we discussed plug-ins, which automate boring tedious tasks. Sibelius includes hundreds of plug-ins and there are even more available to download from the Sibelius website. Take some time to scan the complete plug-ins list (under the Plug-ins menu in Sibelius 6, or spread throughout the Ribbon in Sibelius 7) so you know whats available to you! Lets test a few out.

Add note names This plug-in automatically add note names above or below each note. First, make sure youre in Panorama view (press Shift+P) Select the entire Ash Grove melody Sibelius 5 & 6: go to Plug-ins > Text > Add note names Sibelius 7: go to Text > Plug-ins > Add note names Choose your settings (see image, right) and click OK

Add simple harmony #1 Select The Ash Grove melody again Sibelius 5 & 6: go to Plug-ins > Text > Add note names Sibelius 7: go to Text > Plug-ins > Add note names Choose these settings Click OK

You should end up with this:

Its not perfect, but you can easily fix any parts you dont like. Add simple harmony #2 Well run the same plug-in again, but this time be sure to use these alternative settings instead (see image): Select The Ash Grove melody again Sibelius 5 & 6: go to Plug-ins > Text > Add note names Sibelius 7: go to Text > Plug-ins > Add note names Choose these settings Click OK

You should end up with a second piano stave, which includes this accompaniment:

Arrange
The Arrange feature is another type of plug-in. Well use it to arrange the second piano part (containing the block chords) for a string section. Add string staves Make sure youre still in Panorama view (it will make this process easier) Open the Instruments window (press I) and add four string staves: Violin 1 Violin 2 Viola Cello

Next, select the second piano part Double-click in the right hand stave, then Shift-click in the left-hand stave Press Ctrl+C (C) Select the destination bars: click in the first bar of Violin 1, then shift-click in the first bar of the cello part Sibelius 5 & 6: go to Notes > Arrange Sibelius 7: go to Note Input > Arrange > Choose Arrange Style In the window that opens, choose the family of instruments you are arranging for: Strings Click OK

The piano part should explode into the string parts. See Notes part 3 page 7, Arrange

Congratulations!
Well done were nearly there. In the final session well look at something completely different: creating classroom resources such as worksheets and musical examples for exams. All the best, Katie Midnight Music
