The Russky Island Bridge

world record cable-stayed bridge in Russia
Vladivostok town is situated in the Far East of Russia on the coast of the Pacific Ocean, near the border between Russia and North Korea, opposite to Sapporo town in Japan. In Vladivostok, there is a great bridge across the Eastern Bosphorus Strait to the Russky Island, Ref. [1-2].
The main section of the Russky Island Bridge is a 2-tower cable-stayed bridge, main span 1104 m. This is the new world record among cable-stayed bridges [3]; the previous record belonged to the Sutong Bridge in China, span 1088 m, dated 2008 [4]. There are approach bridges at both ends of the cablestayed bridge section of the Russky Bridge, as appears in the attached longitudinal profile. The shape of the both slender concrete towers resembles a narrow-A, height 321 m. This is the new world record among all bridge types [5]; the previous tower record 306 m belonged to the afore mentioned Sutong Bridge [4]. The tower wall thickness of the Russky Bridge tapers upwards, being 2,0 m at base slab, 75 cm at top [5]. The tower legs are connected by three transverse crossbeams, one under the deck, two between the deck and the top. Along the main span, the bridge deck shape is a round-edged steel box girder, total width 29,5 m, width between railings 26,0 m, depth 3,2 m. The bridge accommodates 4 traffic lanes 3,75 m, 2 lanes to each direction. The vertical clearance at main span is notably high, 70 m. The cable stays are located at both edges of the bridge deck, shortest 181 m, longest 578 m, the latter being longest among all cable-stayed bridges [6]. The client of the bridge is the Federal State Institution Directorate of the Federal Road Agency in Vladivostok, main contractor USK Most, consultant NPO Mostovik [6], the project supervisor being JSC Institute Stroiproject [1]. The bridge was built during 2008-2012, at a cost of 1 milliard dollars (USD) [7].
