The Manipal College of Dental Sciences (MCODS), Manipal, formerly known as the College of Dental Surgery, is the first self-financing dental college in the private sector of India. Established in the year 1965, it initially had an intake of 40 students and later increased to 100 from 1983 - 84 onwards. The inception of MCODS, Manipal was a significant milestone in the history of our University. From the humble beginnings in a thatched roof structure with limited facilities, it has grown to be the top rated college in the country, according to a survey by the magazine Outlook in June, 2009. This feat was repeated yet again in 2010 when MCODS Manipal was ranked first among the institutes providing dental education. Manipal College of Dental Sciences offers: Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) The undergraduate dental training programme leading to BDS degree is of five years with 240 teaching days in each academic year. The medium of instruction and examination in the BDS programme is English. However, students are encouraged to learn the local language (Kannada) to communicate better with the patients during treatment process. M.D.S. (Master of Dental Surgery) The undergraduate dental training programme leading to MDS degree is of three years. The medium of instruction and examination in BDS programme is English. However, students are encouraged to learn the local language (Kannada) to communicate better with the patients during treatment process. Post Graduate Diploma in Dental Materials The post graduate diploma training programme is of 2 years divided into 4 semesters. First and Second Semesters: Pre-clinical work and Applied Basic Sciences, Third and Fourth Semesters: Practical Work. Certificate Course in Dental Mechanics and Dental Hygienist The certificate course programme is of 2 years with excellent scope for employment with the Private Practitioners, Dental Laboratories, Dental Institutions, Dental Hospitals, Armed Forces etc. The college has metamorphosed through time and stands tall, both nationally and internationally. Moving from the original school building to the Biochemistry block and then on to what now serves as the outpatient department of the Kasturba Hospital, we are currently situated in two buildings, the clinical wing housed adjacent to the Kasturba Hospital and the pre-clinical wing at the Centre for Basic Sciences.

Academically, the College of Dental Surgery, Manipal was affiliated to the Mysore University (1965-1980) and then to the Mangalore University (1980-1993) before becoming a part of the Manipal University. Today, we have more than 250 dental chairs and state-of-the-art laboratories with an intake of 100 undergraduate students and 25 postgraduate students for all specialties of dentistry.

In addition to the Bachelors and Post Graduate courses in dental surgery, MCODS, Manipal also conducts advanced certificate courses in Oral Implantology, Aesthetic dentistry and LASERs in dentistry. A post graduate course in Dental Materials, the first of its kind in the country, is also a part of the institutions academic progress. A course in Dental Hygiene and a Dental Mechanics course, which is meant for technicians, are offered as well.
