Math Eight Textbook Fail

Creating this lesson so I have a reminder of things I learn as I explore the use of flexbooks. I am experimenting with creating a book that for the Math Eight program here at SSIS. At first I started by looking at creating a Standards based flexbook. I then moved in a slightly different direction. There is some useful information here that I want to keep and post to my blog.

Create A New Flexbook

After logging into the system select Standards Aligned FlexBook from the Create New menu.

Create A Math Seven Flexbook

Although our Math 8 course is in a bit of curricular flux at this time the goal for the class is to get students ready for grade nine Algebra 1. So I am starting with the creation of a Grade 8 Algebra flexbook.

The System Creates the Book

After a few minutes the system generates a book based on the 8th grade common core standards.

Book is Created

After a few seconds the book is created. A few things to note: 1. Editing the book allows you to edit tile and change the book image (Give The Book a Title) 2. You can publish the book this makes the book searchable and averrable to everyone. The system defaults to shared which is "viewable only within one's CK-12 account, is by "Invitation only"" 3. You can download th ebook as a pdf. This might be interesting as I would then be able open the PDF in Pages and create an iBook using iBook author. In iBook author you can add quiz widgets and other widgets that might make the book more interesting and useful. 4. Download in a mobi format for kindle 5. Download as an epub and it can be opened on an iPad or other Android device. 6. You can share this on social media, email the book link or share with a group so you could make a collaborative book.

Give The Book A Title

When you select create a flexbook you are able to create a title for your book and also to change the book cover page image. I need to experiment more with the image capability more as I am not sure about image size. In the above graphic it is a thumbnail sized 148x192 pixels. If I download this as an epub then open it in Ibooks on my iPad it is a larger size. I am assuming I start big then the system scales the images to the sizes that are needed.

Create Another Flexbook

I noticed that there is no work with integers, or rational numbers in the book I created and I would like to add this content to the book. This is something we will need for Math 8. There may be another way of doing this but I am not sure how. When I searched for add content I could not find a common core standard based arithmetic flexbook. So I created this book then merge the two books to create the Math Eight Flexbook.

Merging the Flexbooks

In the next step I opened the Math 8 Saigon South International School Flexbook and added the Arithmetic SSIS flexbook..

Add More

So next I am going to repeat all of this for grade 7 Arithmetic and Algebra: merge everything into one document create chapters decide on the content I want to keep look for the content I need to add show this to someone smarter than me to figure out if this fits, works and is worth it!
