Building Design Project Design Procedure

STEP 1: Plan an approximate layout of the building. Given the size of the building, layout approximately where the columns and beams will be Determine the size of the bays of the structure Make sure that the beams are of reasonable length

STEP 2: Calculate dead and snow (live) loads. Calculate the snow and rain loads from the formula given in Subsection 1.3.2 of the lecture notes Calculate the dead loads from the roofing details type of insulation and roofing assigned to you (ref.: pg. 7-41 in Steel Construction Handbook) There is no need to consider mechanical equipment or a suspended ceiling in your calculations

STEP 3: Select roof decking. Design using the factored loading and service loads based on your calculations in Step 2 Do NOT design a composite deck Design procedures exemplified in Example 3.1

STEP 4: Select OWSJ's. Considering the spacing between consecutive supporting beams worked out in Step 1, determine the number of decks and OWSJs Make sure to consider the width of decking selected in Step 3 Design procedures exemplified in Examples 3.3 and 3.4

STEP 5: Design beams. Determine all loads acting upon the tributary area plus both point and uniformly distributed loads (UDL) Dont forget to include the load imposed due to the mass of structural elements Hint: For simplicitys sake, convert all loads as a UDL; in other words, find the equivalent UDL for all loads Design procedures exemplified in Examples 4.1 through 4.9

STEP 6: Design columns. Determine all loads acting upon the tributary area and convert to a point load; this is the axial load, Cf Design procedures exemplified in Examples 5.6 through 5.8 and outlined in Subsection 5.5.1 of the lecture notes

STEP 7: Design steel column base plates.

Calculate the factored bearing resistance, Br, from the formula given in Subsection 7.2 of the lecture notes Use the axial load, Cf, as calculated in Step 6 Assume the specified 28-day strength of concrete, fc, is 30 MPa; if you have already assumed another number, please see me Design procedures exemplified in Examples 7.1 and 7.2

STEP 8: Design footings. Determine the factored column load, Pf, based on the axial load determined in Step 6 Use the soil allowable bearing capacity, qsr = 325 kN/m2 Assume the specified 28-day strength of concrete, fc, is 30 MPa (keep in mind that this is the same value as in Step 7); if you have already assumed another number, please see me Design procedures exemplified in Example 8.1

8. Create engineering drawings. Create and generate the foundation plan Create and generate the roof plan Remember that you are creating only the structural engineering drawings. Show only structural components of the building columns, beams, roof decking, bracing, and footings just the skeleton structure of the building that keeps the building standing upward. Do NOT create architectural drawings. Do NOT show architectural features of the building, such as rooms, bathrooms, corridors, canopies, windows, doors, etc.

9. Final check and submission Check all design calculations and drawings Remember to put your name and your partners names on all documents and drawings Notes can be rough they do not need to be typed but please make sure that all of your notes are neat and legible Submit by Friday, April 13, 2007
