QUESTIONS 33 TO 40 ARE BASED ON THE PASSAGE BELOW. Nicole Dryburgh was diagnosed with spinal tumour in August 2000, just before her eleventh birthday. She had an operation to remove the tumour at Kings College Hospital in London and this was followed by 8 weeks of daily radiotherapy at The Royal Marsden Hospital in Surrey. After this, there were many more months of check-ups and scans. Six months after she was diagnosed with spinal tumour, Nicole had a stroke and became paralysed from waist downwards and totally blind. She fell into deep depression over her condition. However, her prayers, her determination and the love of her family gave her the will to overcome her disabilities and to live life well and meaningfully. She travelled to the beach at Cornwall and even managed a Scottish Highland holiday. After two years of more chemotherapy, the final scan showed that Nicoles tumours had stayed the same size and had not enlarged. Nicole had hoped to beat the cancer completely but although the scans did not show what she had hoped for, she decided to soldier on. She wrote an autobiography, The Way I See It, which told of her struggles with cancer and of being blind. Through her book, she wished to inspire others in the same boat to persevere despite the odds against them.
