This book by the designer showcases his practical functional designs while working for various firms including his long employment at Sears. I used many of the images in this book in my website on the Impact on Industrial Design page.

This book showed how groundbreaking the New Bauhaus was in the field of photography, through a large collection of the students and masters photographs. Moholy-Nagy taught the artists to perceive light in a new way, a technique shown throughout the book.

Robert Venturi rebuffs Miess modernist architectural style, ushering in the philosophy of postmodernism. This showed that although Bauhaus Chicago was a turning point, not everyone saw it that way.

This website describes the architecture of Mies Lake Shore Drive Apartments along with some pictures, and how best to view it in person. Mies Lake Shore Drive Apartments are perfect examples of his embrace of open spaces and light, a new idea of the time.

This contains some background on the German Bauhaus and the propagation of the Bauhaus concepts by its artists, especially in Chicago, after the closure of the German Bauhaus. This site shows the influence of German Bauhaus on Chicago Bauhaus, an influence necessary for the innovative ideas Chicago Bauhaus preached.

Carter, Peter. Mies Van Der Rohe at Work. London: Phaidon, 2005. Print.

The book explores, in detail, the architectural work of Mies through the years. The Biographical Notes section was full of interesting anecdotes and quotations. I also used a few images from this book in my website under Impact on Architecture.

This list reveals the contents of the Charles Harrison Papers collection at the University of Illinois at Chicago. This proved to be quite helpful when I visited the UIC Library and looked through this collection of Charles Harrisons designs. All of the present designs showed Harrisons wish to design for the purpose of mass consumption and affordability.

This book gave the background of the New Bauhaus in terms of its curriculum, financial backing, and how it came to be a part of Illinois Institute of Technology. It also contained copies of schedules, articles, and speeches about or given by Bauhaus masters. I took pictures of various images in the book and used the preliminary courses wheel on my Curriculum/Philosophy of New Bauhaus webpage.

Herzogenrath, Wulf. 50 Years Bauhaus. Supplement; on the Occasion of the Exhibition at the Art Gallery of Ontario. Stu gart r embergischer Kunstverein, 1969. Print. This book has a timeline of events surrounding Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lszl MoholyNagy. These timelines helped me to put the lives of Mies van der Rohe and Moholy-Nagy into context, allowing me to further understand what radical thinkers they were in their time.

This website has a brief article on Charles Harrison and his designs and contains some images of Harrisons designed products. This article gave me a broad picture of Harrison and his designs, allowing me to properly structure my argument about him.

Kentgens-Craig, Margret. The Bauhaus and America: First Contacts, 1919-1936. Cambridge, MA: MIT, 1999. Print.

Margret Kentgens-Craig was the former Head of the Department of Archives and Collections at the Bauhaus Dessau Foundation, Germany. The book explored how Bauhaus was perceived in the U.S. over the years. It was not always well understood in the U.S. and was not equally well received by American cities, due to existing academic and professional philosophies, and to American antagonism towards Germany during the period of the two World Wars.

This book chronicles the events of Bauhaus Germany, its end, and the exodus of its artists to many countries in the world including the U.S. This helped me to understand the transition from German Bauhaus to Chicago Bauhaus, providing much needed background.

This website describes the architecture of Mies Chicago Federal Center, along with some pictures, and how best to view it in person. The Chicago Federal Center includes the Everett McKinley Dirksen Building, the John C. Kluczynski Building, and the Loop Post Office. These buildings proved to be ideal examples of Mies philosophy that the building should be part of the city and allow as much of it to flow in as possible.

This website describes Mies IIT Crown Hall architecture along with some pictures, and how best to view it in person. The IIT Crown Hall proved to be useful in two ways. Both in that IIT absorbed Bauhaus Chicago, and that its simple nature and openness perfectly reflect Mies architectural style.

This book contains some of Lszl Moholy-Nagys speeches, and excerpts from Moholys books. It also has speeches by others about the Chicago Bauhaus institution. These speeches provided me with insight into the thoughts of the Chicago Bauhaus founders and helped me to better understand their goals.
