Wireless In-Building Solutions October 2008

Wireless Enterprise Drivers

Cellular phones are the primary communications device in general and specifically for corporate users
Mobility and Wireless are key to businesses Enterprises need more services, coverage and capacity than ever before. Data services in particular require more capacity and improved coverage to support the growth in demand

70% of mobile calls are made inside buildings Corporate users are key to the carriers
The highest ARPU is generated by corporate users

Wireless Network Challenges

Current wireless networks designed for best effort voice applications
Broad coverage from Tall towers Sufficient for low frequency propagation, low bandwidth voice & inconsistent service levels

Challenges to provide ubiquitous coverage

Use of higher frequencies with low propagation characteristics Bandwidth demands for highspeed data & video Demands for greater service levels

Next generation networks require small, distributed cells to accommodate ubiquitous coverage, quality service levels & delivery of high-speed data services

Yellow areas represent holes in macro wireless coverage 5

In-Building Coverage/Capacity from Macro Cell Network

Macro-cellular networks were designed and optimized for outdoor coverage and capacity Heavy usage in buildings drains the macro cellular network capacity It is not economically viable to provide Wireless Enterprise grade of service from the Macro Network

Outdoor traffic congestions must not affect the indoor users

Indoor solutions are needed to provide optimal Wireless Enterprise coverage

What is a DAS?
A Distributed antenna system is a transport architecture that a common BTS signaling location, or, source and multiple antenna radiation points, often called antena nodes or, in the case of active transport systems: remote units These remote locations are designed to achieve optimal Service Provider objectives for coverage and capacity. Radiation points at a much closer proximity to the service subscriber users.

Benefit of Outdoor DAS

Outdoor DAS for Cell Splitting

As capacity needs increase, use DAS to feed smaller cells from existing cell site
Greater than 30% savings in site development over traditional BTS Use of either fiber or millimeter wave transport

Why Distributed Antenna Systems ?

Provide Uniform Signal Quality Over Targeted Coverage Area Maximize/Optimize Use of Radio Capacity Reduce Zoning Issues Deliver Quicker Time-to-Market Increase Spectral Efficiency Reduce CAPEX and OPEX Future Proof Your Radio Access Network

ADC System Installation Costs

ADC system installation costs are the lowest in the industry
ADC products are the only products on the market which use common building cabling Cat-5 or CATV cabling Enterprise IT groups are familiar with these cable types and they are in widespread use today to support data and video. Materials are low cost and easy to procure These cable types dont require specialized installers (can be done by the in-house IT group) Extremely flexible, easy and quick to install and connectorize minimal disruption coax
