Sketch the peaucellier mechanism and prove that a tracing point on it describes a straight-line path. (15M) A Four-bar chain ABCD has a fixed link AD= 900mm, the driving crank AB= 250mm, the driven crank CD= 500 mm and the connecting link BC= 1100mm. Find the velocity and acceleration of point P midway between Band C when the angle BAD =1500 and AB rotates clockwise at a uniform speed of 500rpm. (15M) a) For a Davis steering gear, derive the expression for the angle of inclination of the track arms to longitudinal axis of the vehicle in terms of the distance between the pivots of the front axle and wheelbase. b) What is a Hookes joint? Where is it used? c) The driving shaft of a Hookes joint rotates at a uniform speed of 400 rpm. If the total maximum variation in speed of the driven shaft is 12 percent of the mean speed, determine the greatest permissible angle between the axes of the shaft. Also find the maximum and minimum speeds of the driven shaft. (7M+3M+5M) A Symmetrical tangent cam with a least radius of 25 mm operates a roller follower of radius 10 mm. The angle of ascent is 60 degrees and total lift is 15 mm. If the speed of rotation of the cam is 500 r.p.m, calculate i) The distance between the cam center and the nose center, nose radius and the angle of control of cam with straight flank ii) The acceleration of the follower at beginning of the lift and at the apex of the circular nose. a) What is meant by crowning of a pulley? How does crowning help the belt from running off the pulleys? b) A leather belt of thickness 8 mm and width 100 mm connects two pulleys of 600 mm diameter and 1000 mm diameter, their centers being 3000 mm apart. If the speed of the larger pulley is 400 r.p.m, the coefficient of friction between belt and pulley is 0.25 and the maximum belt stress is 120 N/cm2, determine the maximum power transmitted and the initial belt tension. The number of teeth on the gears P, Q, R and S are 54, 75, 36 and 81 respectively. Gears Q and R constitute a compound gear. (10M+5M) a) Sketch polar velocity diagram and of a Hookes joint and mark its salient features. b) Two inclined shafts are connected by means of a universal joint. The speed of the driving shaft is 1000rpm. If the total fluctuation of speed of the driven shaft is not to exceed 10% of this, what is the maximum possible inclination between the two shafts? Also calculate the maximum and minimum speeds of the driven shafts. With this angle, what will be the maximum acceleration to which the driven shaft is subjected and when this will occur? (10M+5M) Draw the profile of a cam operating a knife-edge follower for the data: Follower to move outward through a distance of 25 mm during 100 degrees of the cam rotation; dwell for the next 50 degrees of rotation; return to its original position during 120 degrees of cam rotation and to dwell for the remaining 90 degrees of cam rotation. The cam is rotating clockwise at a uniform speed of 400 r.p.m. The minimum radius of the cam is 40 mm and the line of stroke of the follower is 12 mm offset from the axis of the cam. The displacement is to take place with uniform acceleration and retardation on both the outward and return strokes. (15M)

Prove this for two rigid bodies, the relative motion between which is rolling. b) For two involute gears in mesh, with pinion as the driver, the arc of approach is not to be less than 1.1 times the circular pitch. If the pressure angle is 20 degrees and if velocity ratio is 2.5, determine the least number of teeth on each gear, if interference is just avoided. (9M+6M) a) What are advantages and disadvantages of crossed belts over open belts? b) A pulley of 300 mm in diameter running at 250 r.p.m is connected by belting to another pulley at a distance of 3 m. The second pulley has to run at 150 r.p.m. The belt is 5 mm thick and 120 mm wide and weighs 1.1 g/cm3. Allowing a slip of 2% between belt and each pulley, determine i) the size of the second pulley and ii) the stress in the belt due to centrifugal tension and iii) power transmitted. Assume coefficient of friction as 0.25. (4M+11M) An epicyclic train is composed of a fixed annular wheel A having 180 teeth. Meshing with A is a wheel B which drives wheel D through an idle wheel C, D being concentric with A. Wheels B and C are carried on an arm which revolves clockwise at 90 r.p.m about the axis of A and D. If the wheels B and D have 30 and 48 teeth respectively, find the number of teeth on C and the speed and the sense of rotation of C. (15M)
