PREFACE
‘Tue thoughes which I publish ia what follows are the precipitate of
philosophial investigations which have occupied me for the st
sixteen years. They concern many subjects: the concepts of meaning,
‘of understanding, of 2 proposition, of logie, che foundations of
mathematics states of consciousness, and other things. Ihave writen,
down all these thoughts as remark, shore paragraphs, of which there is
sometimes #faely long chain shout the tame subject, while I sofne-
times make a sudden change, jumping from one topic to another It
was my intention at fest co bring all shis together in a Book whose
form I pictured diferenly at dierent times, But the esential thing
‘was thatthe thoughts should proceed from one subject to another
in natural order and without breaks
Alice several unsucessfal attempts to weld mi results together into
such a whole, I realized that I should never succeed. ‘The best that I
could write would never be more than philosophical remasks; my
thoughts were soon crippled iT tried to force them on in any single
Aliection agains thei natural inclination. And this was, of cours,
conaected with the very satue ofthe investigation. For this compels
tsto travel overa wide field of thought crie-crosin every dtection —
‘The philosophical rematks in this book are, at it were, number of
sketches of landscapes which were made ia'the course of these long,
and involved journeyings.
‘The same oF almost the same points were always being approached
aleesh from diferent dresion, and new sketches made. Very mang of
these were badly deawa of uncharacteristic, masked by all the defect
of a weak draughtsman, And when they were rejected a number of
tolerable ones wee left, which now had tobe arranged and somtimes
cut down, so tha f yoo looked at them you could get «picture ofthe
Tandscape. Ths thie book is really only an album.

An important part of the training will consist inthe teacher's pointing

does this mean? Wel it can mean vatious things; but one very likely
