If you had to name the two most important Christian values what would you say? Id suggest we can't follow Jesus unless we live a life of gratitude and forgiveness. Gratitude and forgiveness nurture a perspective that is healthy, life-giving, and generous. They free us from preoccupation with ourselves by centering our lives on beauty and grace instead of disappointment and fear. Gratitude flows from awareness of our good fortune. Whether were expressing gratitude for life, for health, for beauty, for relationship, or for anything else, were acknowledging something we didnt create or develop. We humbly accept the fact that our lives are shaped by blessings we did nothing to earn. We recognize that good exists in the world and that we benefit from this good in its many different forms. As Christians, we further acknowledge that the good in life comes from God and is a reflection of God. Gratitude puts God at the center of our lives! Forgiveness is so much more than a singular act offered in response to a specific offense. Forgiveness, as Jesus describes it, is an orientation toward life. Large or small, we choose to accept life on lifes terms and to trust God to work through every circumstance. We forgive ourselves for our defects of character and we forgive others. In other words, we accept that people are human and that they will disappoint us. Forgiveness frees us from perfectionism and resentment. It grants us freedom to embrace God's mercy and grace again and again. It empowers us to live hopeful, optimistic lives. Forgiveness lets God be God and human beings be human beings. Most of us need to reinforce these principles consistently if we hope to live them out. We need to step back from our experiences and encounters so God can restore us to an attitude of gratitude and move us to forgive again, and again, and again. This week, our all-church study focuses on the Christian values of gratitude and forgiveness. The study includes a guided meditation on gratitude and another on forgiveness. Those meditations are available on our website along with the written materials that reflect on these twin values of our faith. Take time this week to read over the week five materials from the all-church study on gratitude and forgiveness. Find some quiet time to sit and listen to the guided meditations on each of these important Christian virtues. Recommit yourself to living with an attitude of gratitude and a commitment to forgive. It will improve your life, and it will improve the lives of those around you.

Mark your Calendar for Homecoming Weekend

We have set the weekend of August 23 25 for our second Annual Homecoming Weekend. Plan to invite your friends who were members here in the past to join us this weekend. The only way this can be really successful is that you invite your friends from the past with whom you are still in contact, or give their addresses to Donna so invites can be sent. Last year we had a lot of incorrect addresses since the 100th anniversary in 2005. Last week after Loch Leven Sunday it was suggested that we have a weekend at Loch Leven. So I began to think how about if we had a Friday night and Saturday on the homecoming weekend and then come back to the city for church on Sunday. This would be a great way for those of you who went to Loch Leven as kids to reconnect with your friends. I have checked with Loch Leven and Friday and Saturday, August 23 -24 are open. Costs would be $66 per adult and $55 per child for Friday night dinner, lodging, Saturday breakfast and lunch. Let me know your feedback ASAP as to whether you think this would be feasible or not. I will have to let Loch Leven know in the next few weeks if we want those dates. Donna W

Pentecost Offering Coming Up

We will receive the 2013 Pentecost Offering on the next two Sundays--May 12 and 19. This offering is dedicated to launching new congregations of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) across our nation and Canada. Half of the offering will be returned to our Region for use in both the support of recently begun new congregations and for the launching of new congregations in our ethnically diverse Region. The other half of the offering will be distributed by Hope Partners through other Regions in the United States where new congregations are needed. Included in this Sunday's worship bulletin is an insert entitled "Your Church is Growing" as well as an envelope. You are encouraged to read the information on this insert and to make your gift in support of the 2013 Pentecost Offering of our congregation. Last year we were one of the top 200 churches in the nation with our offering. Our goal for this years offering is $900. Thank you, in advance, for your gift for this year's Pentecost Offering. Becoming A Global Mission Church

At the Outreach meeting this coming Wednesday, May 15, at 7 P.M. in the Choir Room, we will be discussing Rusty Kennedys letter that was sent to you via email this past week regarding the Fullerton Homeless Shelter Proposal that will be discussed at the May 21 City Council meeting as well as the issue of our "Becoming a Global Mission Church." Several copies of the resource outlining this process have been placed on the credenza in the narthex. You are encouraged to pick up a copy of this brief document, to carefully read it, and to share your thoughts about this matter with the Outreach Ministry. You are welcome to attend our meeting or, you can give us your feedback about this topic in writing. We expect to bring a proposal about this matter for your action during our Annual Meeting this November. We value your input and your participation in this process. Ed Linberg, chair 5

Next Sunday, May 19 is Pentecost Sunday WEAR RED!

We Get Letters
Letter Number 1 "It was a joy to receive your gift of $125.00 through the Office of Church Relations at Chapman University. You are actively supporting our mission to Disciples and United Church of Christ students at Chapman, as we help them grow spiritually and relationally in these pivotal years." This letter from Nancy Brink, Director of Church Relations, Chapman University, dated April 29, also included this personal handwritten note: "We know that you are exceedingly proud of Cambria, as we are! Besides her Fullbright, last Friday she won the Ronald M. Huntington award for Outstanding Scholarship--our highest academic award!" We are very proud of Cambria Findley-Grubb who will be graduating from Chapman on May 19. Congratulations, Cambria! You have been an outstanding student at Chapman and an equally outstanding representative of the faith we share through your commitment to justice and peace in the name of Christ! Our best wishes and prayers go with you as you embark on the next chapter of your life. Letter Number 2 "On behalf of Pathways of Hope (formerly FIES) Board of Directors, our dedicated staff, tireless volunteers, and the homeless and hungry we serve, I want to thank you for your generous donation of $187.50 in support of our programs." Maria Mazzenga Avellaneda, Executive Director Letter Number 3 Repeating the same sentence from Letter Number 2, Maria also thanked us for a generous donation of $300. Both of these letters were dated May 1, 2013. As usual, these letters will be posted on the bulletin board for you to read them in their entirety. Thank you for your continuing financial support of the many ministries of our congregation through both our operating budget and the special offerings we receive from time to time. Chapel on Wheels Fundraiser

Thank you
Susie Wright wants to thank the church for the loan of a wheelchair so she could take her friend, Katherine, to Railroad Days. She had a wonderful time.

Did You Know?

Our coffee cart was made as a gift for a mother-in-law? Donna Woodbridge was talking to her son-in-law, Ron and mentioned that she wanted a way to store and carry out the pots of coffee, hot water and punch for the kids outside and so our congregation could gather and visit with each other over a cup of coffee Ron set out to give his mother-in-law a present and made the coffee cart that is used every Sunday for our coffee fellowship time. A Word from our Associate Pastor

Mothers Day - a day that for many is a wonderful gift. A day that brings happy memories, a day that is full of amazement, wonder, and awe. A mother is someone who is meant to love and nurture, to protect and encourage, a mother is a gift. But as we approach Mothers Day, I am reminded that this day is not easy for everyone. Although I have experienced an easy journey into motherhood, many women do not have my experience, and I hold all women in prayer. Here is a prayer for this day: God of Love, we know that this day is one that is full of emotions on every end of the spectrum. We pray for our own mothers, those who showed us the face of God and showered us with unconditional love, and for those who fell far short of our expectations. We pray for those women who were role models in our lives, helping us on our journey. We pray for those expecting mothers, who are experiencing the wonders of pregnancy, those who are scared, and those who are happily waiting for the arrival of new life. We pray for new mothers, who are navigating the waters with little sleep, still trying to grasp all the ways their lives have changed. We pray for all those who are struggling to find balance with family and work; for those who are exhausted, stressed, and/or depressed. We pray for those mothers who have children with physical, emotional, or mental disabilities; for the mothers who have physical, emotional, or mental disabilities. We pray for all those who are raising children on their own, raising children that are not theirs, and those who are stuck in limbo waiting for an adoption to complete their family. We pray for those mothers who have lost children, for those whose children are estranged, and for those whose children have left home. We pray for those whose desire to become a mother has not been fulfilled, and the heartache, anger and helplessness that can accompany their journey. Bless all women, that their love may be deep and true and that their love may be a reflection of your face, O God. Amen.
