Digital Unit Plan Template Unit Title: What Are the Odds?

Content Area: Mathematics, Algebra 2

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s): Algebra 2 Standards 18.0 Students use fundamental counting principles to compute combinations and permutations. 19.0 Students use combinations and permutations to compute probabilities. 20.0 Students know the binomial theorem and use it to expand binomial expressions that are raised to positive integer powers. Probability Standards 2.0 Students know the denition of conditional probability and use it to solve for probabilities in nite sample spaces. 4.0 Students are familiar with the standard distributions (normal, binomial, and exponential) and can use them to solve for events in problems in which the distribution belongs to those families.

Name: Tania Hernandez Grade Level: 10th - 12th

Big Ideas: Students will use permutations and combinations, nd probabilities, and identify binomial distributions, this will be through the use of a powerpoint presentations, guided notes, a webquest activity, assessments and a graphic organizer.

Unit Goals and Objectives: Students will be able to use the Fundamental Counting Principle and permutations to calculate the number of choices for a situation. Students will be able to determine the likelihood that an event will occur. Students will nd probabilities of compound events. Students will nd probabilities of independent and dependent events. Students will be able to identify and interpret binomial distributions.

Unit Summary: In this unit, we will be exploring permutations, combinations, probability, and looking at binomial distributions. For this unit plan, there will be presentations, assessments, and several strategies implemented. This includes a lesson plan that introduces the topics on probability and how it is applied to real life situations. Other activities we will cover include a wequest activity that introduces students to the history of probability; and a graphic organizer that will help students differentiate between the different topics that we cover.

Lesson Activities: There will be a power-point presentation on the introduction of probability. Students will be introduced to the basic topics of probability, the presentation includes denitions, examples, and a fun video on the famous Monty Hall problem. Students are expected to follow along and ll out the guided notes.

Lesson Activities: Students will go on a webquest for this activity. Questions will cover a bit of the history of probability, a quick overview of the different counting methods and the differences between them, basics of probability, and a brief introduction to the binomial theorem and binomial distribution.

Lesson Activities: For this activity, students will create an idea wheel in which they will choose between Counting methods and Probability. They will identify the concepts associated with their topic, and use the textbook listed to ll in their wheel. Those who chose Counting Methods will have to list denitions, examples, create three original problems, and explain how to differentiate between the three. The students who choose the Probability option will do the same, except they have 5 concepts and only have to create two original problems.
