Master Gunnery Sergeant Larry Murphy, JR United States Marine Corps MGySgt Murphy signed up for the Delayed

Entry Program on January 3, 1980 in Memphis, Tennessee. He attended recruit training at 2nd Battalion Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) Parris Island, South Carolina on May 30, 1980. He was assigned to Platoon 2037 and graduated August 21, 1980 with Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) 6600, Basic Avionicsman.

Private First Class (PFC) Murphy reported to Naval Air Station (NAS) Memphis, Millington, Tennessee on September 3, 1980 for Aviation Electricians Mate School. He graduated February 26, 1981 and was meritoriously promoted to Lance Corporal (LCPL) and earned the Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) 6331, Aircraft Electrical Systems Technician. LCpl Murphy reported for duty to Trainee Management Element 32(TME-32) Marine Aircraft Group (MAG) 16 MCAS (H) Tustin, California on March 16, 1981. He did his On the Job Training (OJT) with Heavy Marine Helicopter Squadrons (HMH) 361, 363, and Helicopter Marine Training Squadron (HMT) 301. He attended Naval Aviation Maintenance Training Detachment (NAMTRADET) 1032 for CH-53 Electrical & Instruments and AFCS training. He completed TME-32 training to obtain the MOS of 6343, CH-53 Organizational Level Aircraft Electrician. During the month of November 1981, LCpl Murphy was selected to assist in standing up the first CH-53E Super Stallion squadron the west coast, HMH-465. LCpl Murphy was sent Temporary Additional Duty (TAD) to MCAS New River, North Carolina to attend the Sikorsky Factory sponsored school to obtain the MOS of 6345 CH-53E Aircraft Electrician. He received his OJT from HMH-464 MCAS New River. Upon completion of his training, LCpl Murphy returned to MCAS (H) Tustin for duty. In addition to working in the Avionics division, he was assigned the as the Barracks Sgt for barracks 177 aboard MCAS (H) Tustin. Due to outstanding performance as the barracks Sgt, LCpl Murphy was meritoriously promoted to CPL. He was assigned a host of Collateral Duties for the squadron. He earned his Collateral Duty Inspector (CDI) designation and was one of the go to Electrical Technicians for aircraft maintenance. Cpl Murphy executed Permanent Change of Station Orders (PCS) to NAS Memphis, Millington, Tennessee March 4, 2004 where he attended the Advanced Electrician Intermediate Course (AEIC-7). He graduated October 23, 1984. He was promoted to Sergeant (SGT) while he was there. Upon graduation, he was reassigned to HMH-465, MCAS (H) Tustin, California. He participated in the squadrons first Western Pacific Deployment (WESTPAC) from January to July 1986. Sgt Murphy was temporarily assigned as Collateral Duty Quality Assurance Inspector (CDQAR) for the Avionics division. In January, 1988 Sgt Murphy was assigned to NAMTRADET-1032 for Instructor Duty. He earned his Master Training Specialist designation as the result of his outstanding teaching abilities and the number of students taught. Sgt Murphy was promoted to SSgt February 1, 1989. He was reassigned to HMH-465 to participate in Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm from October 12, 1990 to March 24, 1991. After his return from these operations, the squadron deployed on another WESTPAC tour January to July 1992. During this deployment, SSgt Murphy participated in the South West Asia Cease Fire Campaign February 17, 1992 March 24, 1992. After completion of this tour, SSgt Murphy reported for duty to Naval Air Technical Training Center (NATTC) Aircraft Electricians Course, NAS Memphis, Millington, Tennessee as an Aircraft Electrician Instructor. He was their July 1992 to December 1995. SSgt Murphy earned his Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S) Degree in Electronics Technology (Cum Laude) from the State Technical Institute at Memphis. He also

attended the Staff Non-Commissioned Officer Career Course (SNCOA) in Quantico, Virginia graduating May 1993 with honors. SSgt Murphy reported for duty to HMH-366 Marine Corps Base Hawaii (MCBH), Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii January 1996 June 1999. He was promoted to Gysgt June 1, 1996. GySgt Murphy was assigned the Maintenance Control Chief for the squadron. He was instrumental in coordinating several deployments from MCBH to Marine Corps Air and Ground Combat Center (MCAGCC) 29 Palms, California and MCAS Yuma, Arizona for Weapons Training Instruction (WTI) Exercises. GySgt Murphy attended the Advanced Staff Non-Commissioned Officer Course Class 4-97 at MCAS El Toro. GySgt Murphy was a distinguished graduate July 10, 1997. GySgt Murphy reported for duty to Heavy Marine Helicopter Squadron (HMH) 462, MAG-16 MCAS Miramar, San Diego California June 1999 August 2002. He was assigned as the Quality Assurance Chief. During his tenure as the Quality Assurance Chief, the squadron never failed an inspection by outside entities. GySgt Murphy earned 2 Navy Achievement Medals for his efforts. He completed 2 Unit Deployment Program (UPDs) with HMH-462 to Okinawa, Japan December 1999 June 2000 and December 2001 June 2002. While in Japan, GySgt Murphy was deployed to the Philippines to participate in Operation Balikatan, a joint unilateral training exercise with the Philippine Armed Forces. GySgt Murphy was promoted to Master Sergeant September 1, 2000. MSgt Murphy reported for duty to Fixed Wing Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 134 as the Avionics Division Chief on August 2, 2002 October 1, 2004. He served in several billets: Acting SgtMaj, Maintenance Chief, Quality Assurance Chief, Ground Safety Manager, and Equal Opportunity Representative. MSgt Murphy earned his Bachelors of Science degree (Cum Laude) in Information Technology April 20, 2003. On October 1, 2004 MSgt Murphy was tasked with establishing a Ground Safety Program for MAG-46, MCAS Miramar, San Diego, California. He excelled at the implementation of the program and attributed to the drastic reduction of safety related mishaps within the group. MSgt Murphy was promoted to Master Gunnery Sergeant May 2, 2005. On June 7, 2005 MGySgt Murphy was assigned to Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron (MALS) 16, MCAS Miramar, San Diego, California. He is currently serving as the Avionics Chief for MALS-16. MGySgt Murphy is married to the former Jamie Buggs of Memphis, Tennessee. He has a daughter, Alexandria. They reside in San Diego, California. He also has a son IT3 Murphy III, Larry J, United States Navy, currently stationed in Chinawe, Korea.
