DESCRIPTION

COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is designed for people with NO ELECTRONIC ENGINES BACKGROUND and covers THE 3500 B SERIES IN GENERATOR SET APPLICATION . Given the high reliance on General electronic engine strategies , systems operations , programming and troubleshooting procedures. using service tool ET and FLASH. EMCP II and ECM inter-actions , CCM will be covered as well COURSE DURATION ENGINES COVERED AUDIENCE PROFILE 4 1/2 Days 3508/12 B generator-set Dealer Technical Communicators , Dealer Service Mechanics and/or Electrician, Service Training Instructors. Attendees should be able to read Caterpillar electrical Schematic and have some knowledge in electrical system fundamentals. Attendees should know how to read voltage signals through a standard CAT Multimeter. Engine system knowledge is required. Upon completion the student will be able to: -Explain EUI electronic fuel systems. -Recognize engine components and explain their functions -Use service and diagnostic toolinG ET and FLASH -Establish and program parameters -Troubleshoot the electronic systems, . - Calibrate and adjust electronic components. - Program EMCPII parameters - Explain inter-actions between ECM and EMCPII programming - Use CCMPC software

FUEL SYSTEMS
TODAYS FUEL SYSTEMS AT CATERPILLAR:
Pump & lines - Multiple plunger pump - High pressure fuel lines - Injection nozzles - Limited injection pressure (18.000 PSI)* - Limited injection timing - Limited injection rate capabilities MUI - Mainly used on large engines to eliminate the need for long high pressure lines and the related problems inherent with controlling pressure in these lines. - Requires an additional cam lobe, lifter, push rod and rocker arm for each cylinder.

*Current engine emissions and performance requirements demand injection pressure in excess of 20.000 PSI and greater timing flexibility.

- ECM takes over of the functions of the mechanical governor. - Fuel pump is still used. - Throttle linkage replaced by electronic throttle. - Air fuel ratio control electronically controlled. - Engine is equipped with various sensors for monitoring.

- Fuel is metered electronically by means of a solenoid operated poppet valve. - System still requires a mechanical valve train to actuate the plunger. (Mechanically actuated , electronically controlled) - Fuel transfer pump replaces the "pump & lines".

(Hydraulic Electronic U nit I njectors ) - Plunger movement is not limited to speed or duration of a cam lobe. - Plunger speed is a function of actuation pressure versus fuel pumping resistance. (Hydraulically actuated , electronically controlled) - Injection pressure is +20.000 PSI

LOW IDLE : Minimum RPM at which the engine can operate. MIN 810rpm MAX 990rpm

COOLDOWN SPEED : RPM at which the engine will run during the cooldown period. MIN 810rpm MAX 1800rpm

COOLDOWN TIME : The amount of time the engine will run at the cooldown speed . Programming this parameter to 0 will disable this function. MIN 0mn MAX 30mn

* If there is an EMCPII to this engine , this parameter could be programmed to 0 as the EMCPII performs this function as well.

PRELUBE TIME : Time the engine control will prelube the engine. Programmed to 0 will disable this function. MIN 0s MAX 210s

CYCLE CRANK TIME: The time the starting motor will be energized & the amount of cool down time both time being EQUAL. MIN 0s MAX 60

* If there is an EMCPII to this engine , this parameter could be programmed to 0 as the EMCPII performs this function as well.

TOTAL NUMBER OF CRANK CYLES : The number of crank cycles that will be preformed. MIN 0 MAX 10

CRANK TERMINATE SPEED : Engine RPM at which the starting motor is disengaged. MIN 100rpm MAX 1000rpm

AIR SHUTOFF and ETHER CONTROL : If there is no air shutoff install on the engine then it should be programmed to OFF , that will prevent diagnostic from being logged on the air Shutoff driver in the ECM .

ALL ENGINES BUILD STARTING MAY 15, 1996 HAVE THE E-TRIM FEATURE ON THEIR PERSONALITY MODULE AND INJECTORS CODED WITH AN E-TRIM CODE THE SOFTWARE COMPENSATES FOR INJECTOR VARIATION IN TIMING AND DISCHARGE. THE E-TRIM IS A 4 DIDGIT CODE ETCHED ON THE INJECTOR TAPPET WHEN AN INJECTOR IS CHANGED THE NEW INJECTOR'S E-TRIM CODE MUST BE PROGRAMMED . IF THE NEW CODE IS NOT PROGRAMMED THEN THE PREVIOUS CODE IS ASSUMED IF AN OLD INJECTOR ( NO E-TRIM CODE ) IS INSTALLED , THEN ENTER THE DEFAULT CODE 1100 IF IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO REPROGRAM AN INJECTOR CODE IMMEDIATELY THE ENGINE WILL NOT BE SEVERELY HARMED , ALTHOUGH IT SHOULD BE REPROGRAMMED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE TO OPTIMIZE ENGINE PERFORMANCE AND PREVENT ANY LONG TERM DETRIMENTAL EFFECTS

DIAGNOSTIC FAULTS CODES

THE POSSIBLE CONTROL SYSTEMS THAT CAN GENERATE A DIAGNOSTIC CODE ARE THE ECM AND THE GSC THE GSC RECEIVE AND DISPLAY ECM DIAGNOSTIC FAULT CODES BUT THE RESPONSE OF THE EMCP II WILL DEPEND OF THE SET POINT PROGRAMMING

P03 Shutdown override for ENGINE fault

This set point tells this GSC how to respond to a low engine oil pressure or high coolant temperature fault . They are not diagnostic faults but engine faults. The setting are : 0 - for shutdown 1 - for alarm only

"P04 Shutdown override for SENSOR fault "


The diagnostic faults are: OIL PRESSURE SENSOR COOLANT TEMP SENSOR COOLANT LOSS SENSOR SENSOR POWER SUPPLY They are diagnostic fault not engine fault(bad sensor, wiring...) The setting are : 0 - for shutdown 1 - for alarm only
