MODULE LEARNING OUTCOMES At the end of the module, the students should be able to:1. Develop science and technology literacies to inculcate student with knowledge and skills in employment 2. Acquire scientific and thinking skills. 3. Apply knowledge and skills critically and creatively in problem solving and decision making. 4. Utilize science and technology knowledge that are relevant to employment. 5. Practice and internalize scientific attitudes and good moral values in their work. 6. Justify the importance of inter dependence among living things and the management of nature for survival of mankind 7. Apply knowledge of science in daily life for well-being of mankind 8. Justify the need to love and care for the environment and play an active role in its preservation and conservation

MODULE DESCRIPTION This module introduces methods of learning science through scientific attitude and scientific investigation. This module emphasizes the inquiry method of learning and solving problems. Pupils are trained to carry out experiments in a systematic manner to understand natural phenomena and to test its validity. This module also includes matter and materials, the use and availability of different materials with different characteristics are introduced by activity based lessons. For the topic of environmental preservation and conservation, the concept of

1. MATTER AND SUBSTANCES

CONTENT STANDARD Understand, analyse and apply the matter and substance LEARNING STANDARD 1.1 Analysing changes in the states of matter. 1.2 Understanding the properties and uses of metals and non-metals. 1.3 Understand the characteristics of the alloy and its applications in industry. 1.4 Analysing methods of purifying substances. 1.5 Application of the existence and uses of various substances with different characteristics TEACHING STRATEGIES 1.1 Ask students to explain the kinetic theory of matter using multimedia presentation. Guide students to relate changes in heat to changes in kinetic energy of the particles in matter through activities. Help students to explain the interconversion of the three states of matter based on the kinetic theory of matter. 1.2 Help students to classify the material to metals and non-metals. Guide student to list the properties of metals and non-metals. Based on their physical properties, help students to compare and contrast metals and non-metals. Guide students to relate the physical properties of metals and non-metals to their uses in daily life. 1.3 Help students to describe what alloy is and explain how the formation of the alloy can change the properties of metals. Guide students to relate the changes in the arrangement of particles of metals and alloys through diagrams. Ask students to relate the characteristics of alloy and its uses in daily life and describe the importance of alloy in the industry. Help students to give reasons on the importance of superconducting alloy. 1.4 Help students to state the characteristics of pure substances. Guide students to describe the different methods of purification of substances and relate the characteristics of substances to the methods of purification used. Help students to explain with examples the methods of purification used to purify substances that can solve problems in daily life. 1.5 Ask students to justify the importance of the existence of various substances of different characteristics and states that benefit mankind SUGGESTED LEARNING ACTIVITIES

1.1 Ask students to explain the kinetic theory of matter using multimedia presentation. Guide students to relate changes in heat to changes in kinetic energy of the particles in matter through activities and explain the interconversion of the three states of matter based on the kinetic theory of matter with help of diagram. 1.2 Invite welding educator to talk about metals and non-metals. Students are provided with many examples of metal and non-metals to classify and identify its properties. Using table, ask students to compare and contrast metals and non-metals based on their physical properties. 1.3 Plan field trip to the factory that use superconductor technology in producing product (Toshiba) to gather information. Teacher prepares a question/quiz on how the formation of the alloy can change the properties of metals including the changes in the arrangement of particles of metals and alloys Teachers can use diagrams to simplify the process. Ask students to relate the characteristics of alloy and its uses in daily life and describe the importance of alloy in the industry. 1.4 Ask students to do different methods of purification of substances and discuss the characteristics of substances to the methods of purification used. Guide them to explain with examples the methods of purification used to purify substances that can solve problems in daily life. 1.5 In group of 3, ask students to list the importance of the existence of various substances of different characteristics and states that benefit mankind

2. PRESERVATION AND CONSERVATON OF THE ENVIRONMENT

CONTENT STANDARD Understand, analyse, apply, evaluate and practice of preservation and conservation of nature LEARNING STANDARD 2.1 Understanding the balance of nature 2.2 Analysing the effects of environmental pollution 2.3 Analyze the preservation and conservation and pollution control 2.4 Evaluating the importance of proper management of natural resources in maintaining balance in nature 2.5 Practicing responsible attitudes to preserve and conserve the environment TEACHING STRATEGIES 2.1 Guide students to describe the delicate balance of nature and state the natural cycles that help to maintain balance in nature through multimedia presentation. Ask them to explain how these natural cycles help to maintain balance in nature. Guide them how food webs help maintain balance in nature and explain the effects of natural disasters on the balance in nature. Guide students to generate ideas on ways to maintain balance in nature through activities. 2.2 Ask students to identify the sources of environmental pollution and explain the effects of environmental pollution. Ask students to describe global warming through multimedia presentation and relate greenhouse effect to global warming. Ask students to state what ozone layer is, explain the importance of ozone layer and state chemicals that damage the ozone layer. Guide the students to list the sources of chemicals that can damage the ozone layer and generate ideas on how to overcome the problem of ozone layer depletion through role play. 2.3 Guide students to state the importance of preservation and conservation of the environment. Help students to generate ideas on environmental pollution control and ask students to do an analogy on how preservation and conservation of the environment can contribute to clean and healthy environment by role play. 2.4 Ask students to describe with examples the effects of improper management of natural resources and generate ideas on proper ways to manage natural resources in order to maintain balance in nature. Guide them to conclude the need of efficient management of the environment. 2.5 Plan and conduct environmental campaign through activities or multimedia presentations
