Health Disaster Management Organizational Development Promoting Humanitarian Values

Branch Disaster Response Team (BDRT) Training.


BDRT is a specialized training given to volunteers by the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society to all SLRCS Branches so that in case of an emergency the BDRT team could respond to disasters in the district. This training was organized by the Branch with the help of the National Head Quarters (NHQ) on the 28th of April 2013 to the 04th of May 2013 at the Kithulgala Adventure Base Camp. This training was conducted by trained BDRT officials from the NHQ and the branch for volunteers 35 volunteers in the Colombo Branch so that in case of a disaster the BDRT team would be deployed and proper measures could be taken. A simulation programme was also done in the Lahirugama area where the volunteers were given a real life disaster situation for them to respond and deal with where the community of Lahirugama gave the branch a great support in making the simulation a success.

Blood Donation Programmes


Blood donation programmes were conducted on the 25th of April 2013 and the 27th of April 2013 at the Sedawaththa and Lahirugama areas in the Kolonnawa and Hanwella Divisions. There were 41 pints of blood collected from the Sedawaththa area and 25 pints of blood collected from the Lahirugama area. The main objective of this programme is to encourage the existing donors to regularly donate blood, encourage new people to donate blood on a voluntary basis and promoting the protection of individual health.

Shramadana and Tree Planting Campaigns


Shramadana Programmes were organised in the area of Sangarama on the 07th of April 2013 following up with another shramadana and a tree planting campaign that was organized on the 27 th of April 2013 in the Vidyadana Vidyalaya in Kottawa. There were 70 numbers of volunteers in the Lahirugama area, 138 numbers of volunteers in the Nawinna area, 25 numbers of volunteers in the Sangarama and Siyambalagoda area each contributing to clean the community environment. The main objective of this campaign was to make sure that the community of the Heraliyawala area have dirt free area and also increasing the awareness of re cycling & re using solid material to create a greener future for the future generation.

Diulapitiya - New Year Festival: Marathon

commemoration of the 43rd Earth day walk,

First Aid trainings were conducted by the branch for schools in the Colombo District on the 01 st and 03rd of April 2013 for the JRCs formed in schools; a total number of 52 students were trained on First Aid where students were educated on basic First Aid in case of a day to day emergency thus reducing the amount of risk in a school environment. Meanwhile the branch also provided First Aid services on the 07th, 22nd and 28th of April 2013 at the Peoples Bank - Colombo, Diualapitiya New year Marathon and during the commemoration of the 43 rd earth day walk.

Dissemination in Garments & Junior Red Cross Circles

During dissemination programmes the history of the Red Cross, its seven fundamental principles, our humanitarian services along with the Geneva conventions are mentioned and described in detail to the community to give a better understanding about the Red Cross movement. 02 number of dissemination programmes were done for a total number of 62 students in Colombo district schools during the formation of the Junior Red Cross Circles (JRC). Dissemination exams were also done to make sure that the students have a proper knowledge on the Red Cross. 2 Numbers of Dissemination Programmes were done in the Private sector where a total number of 45 participants were present for the dissemination.

Psycho Social Support Programmes.


Stress Management programmes were conducted on the 06 th of April 2013 in the Heriliyawala area and 11th of April 2013 in the Lahirugama area where a total number of 50 children participated. These programmes are mainly organized to reduce the stress levels and to support the development of the child during early childhood by discussing individual development areas.

Non Communicable Diseases (NCD) and Nutrition Awareness Programmes.


Awareness Programmes on the prevention NCD were organized by the Branch for the Waththegedara and Vivekarama areas in the Maharagama division on the 06th and 07th of April 2013.This awareness programme was conducted in a different manner where an Art Competition was held for the children in both these areas. There were 15 numbers of participants from the Waththegedara area and 25 numbers of participants from the Vivekarama area who drew pictures to show how NCD is caused. The main objectives of this programme was to reduce the percentage of Alcohol, drugs and other things that are normally the main cause of NCD from these drawings. Meanwhile a Nutrition Awareness Programme for mothers was organized on the 08 th of April 2013 in the Korathota area. 38 pregnant mothers were present in the Programme where these pregnant mothers were educated on how to increase the level of Nutrition the babies and the mother before and after birth.

Collaborative Programmes
Collaborative Programmes were conducted on the 05th of April 2013 and the 21st of April 2013 in the Heraliyawala area and the Lahirugama area. The Lahirugama area conducted a programme with the Samurdhi Organization where a childrens club was established so that it would support the government as an auxillary. Rissho kosei dhamma Foundation was present in the Heraliyawala area to provide in kind support for the community in that area. They educated the community on various aspects such as family development, parental support, child psychology and various other areas.
