CoC on Broadband
Communication
Efficient Network Equipment and Infrastructure

Notes to Design a First Draft

Broadband Communication
Already agreed definition:
Broadband Communication is defined as

„ Always-on (connected) Service ????

(Better: defining by “not to dial ...” ?)

„ Providing a two way data service

providing 128 kBit/s as a minimum
Aims of the Code of Conduct

„ Reducing energy consumption for networking

and broadband communication equipment for
existing and future appliances
„ Cooperation with manufacturer to bring up
“energy efficiency as an early state design item”
and to define useful requirements for
environmental conditions like requirements for
air conditioning in data houses.
Focused Appliances

„ Appliances for communication and

broadband communication related to the
end user (mostly located in households
and small offices).

„ Appliances for network infrastructure

related to the service provider (mostly
located up to 2 km from the end user).

Telefonanschluss
Splitter (TAE,
kein Eigenverbrauch)

PSTN

NTBA
(ISDN)

Different Tiers for Faster Success ?
We should set up a first version of CoC very fast. So we should do this by introducing different tiers

„ Tier 1:
„ Doing all needed definitions on terms and
common standards
„ Focusing on well known SOHO appliances
„ Setting Limits for stand-by mode and
referring to CoC on external Power Supplies
„ Setting only a short period to be valid
Different Tiers for Faster Success

„ Tier 2:
„ Including network infrastructure appliances
„ Influenced by hardware properties
„ Influenced by “environmental” conditions
„ Including Voice over IP and other NGN
features
„ Including Power Line Converter for internal
networking
„ Setting a longer period to be valid
Extensions for Tier 2

„ Adding appliances of the networking

infrastructure
„ Adding requirements for condition under
that the hardware should be running (air
conditioning)
„ Adding new appliances like VOIP devices
„ Change criteria from Tier 1 (if applicable)
Different Tiers for Faster Success
„ Tier 3:
„ Adding more appliances (if useful)
„ Adjusting the criteria and limits
„ Looking on new developments and features
Different Tiers for Faster Success

Common standards for measurement?

Measurements
„ All devices: Electrical consumption
depends on load? (if so then define max.
load as default measure point ?)
„ Devices with standby mode: Defining
standby mode and procedure to wake it
up again
„ Using existing standard to measure the
power consumption
Who should Sign/Join this CoC?
„ Many appliances (especially form Tier 1) are
sold in a bundle. Therefore, the provider should
sign tis agreement.
„ Manufacturer for end user equipment should
sign the agreement.
„ Manufacturer for networking infrastructure
should join the group and sign.
„ Groups for standardization of networking
equipment, networking protocols and
networking services should join this group
Upcoming
„ (High) Power over Ethernet ((H)POE)
http://www.panduit.com/enabling_technologies/098749.asp; up to 39W per Port

„ Voice over IP: Wireless (WLAN) / Wired

Additional converter to use old equipment
(e.g. AVM’s all in one box for FAX/ISDN/VOIP/DSL)

„ In House Streaming MM-Data

(e.g. Apple Airport Express, MS MM-XP)

„ Ethernet on Power Lines (SOHO)

„ High Speed Communication via Satellite ?
