Alstoms Plant Integrator solutions maximise performance, while our extensive range of environmental products enable us to supply the cleanest power plants in the industry.

Alstoms Clean Power TodayTM strategy recognises the need to improve the environmental balance of legacy plants, while increasing the adoption of new clean energy solutions. Its three pillars are: 1. Focus on production efficiency and energy management 2. Implementation of carbon capture and storage 3. Balancing the energy portfolio by increasing the share of renewable technologies.

03

The Alstom

Trust,

Clean Power Today!

Hydropower is the most mature source of renewable clean energy with a 100-year track record and a 16% share of the worlds energy mix. It is also the most flexible, being suitable for peak, baseload production or pumped storage. Because it produces zero greenhouse gases during operation and only one third of the available hydropower in the world is as yet harnessed, hydropower generation is destined to continue to grow rapidly.

Plant Integrator
In hydropower, the fundamental choices of turbine type, generator and balance of plant technology are different in every case. There are no off-the-shelf solutions everything is tailor-made based on the conditions of each site such as the head, flow and plant configuration. Building on experience in thousands of projects, Alstom has developed the Plant IntegratorTM approach, to optimise the complex interactions between the sub-systems during the design, verification, testing and operational phases.

Lifecycle Management
When considering the environmental balance of a given project or technology, one has to take into account the entire product or solution lifecycle. This means assessing the whole picture from design and construction to operation, main tenance and upgrade of existing assets. Alstoms support and commitment at all stages of the lifecycle allows owners to maximise their return on investment while minimising negative environmental side effects.

Quantum leap technology:

technology

Efficient turbines
Hydrostatic water guide bearings
Alstom has been supplying power plants with ecofriendly oil-free turbine components for nearly 30 years. Hydrostatic guide bearings force filtered water from the penstock between the shaft and bearing components to create a lubricating film of water. This increases performance, eliminates the risk of oil pollution from the turbine discharge and saves costs.

Reliable generators
Oblique elements
Alstom was the rst equipment provider to patent the oblique elements design in the rotor and stator. Transient stresses, deection forces and the effects of thermal expansion pose a challenge to the circularity and centricity of the rotating and stationary elements of a generator. Oblique elements allow concentric thermal expansion that minimises element fatigue and allows for minimal clearances, making for more efcient, compact and reliable generators. Oblique elements need practically no maintenance, they reduce construction costs due to a smaller foundation, and increase the overall lifetime of a generator. As the first to use this technology, we now have by far the most experience with this solution.

Silt abrasion protective solutions

Solid particles in the water arising from soil erosion cause damage to turbines. This is a particular problem in mountain ranges like the Himalayas or the Andes where heavy rains coincide with fragile soils. Alstom R&D efforts to ght this problem are focussed on the application of hard protective coatings to the turbine runners or the nozzles and buckets, as well as adapting hydraulic designs to minimise erosion-prone zones.

Variable speed generators

With a market share of 47%, Alstom is the undisputed market leader in pumped storage plants. Naturally, we are at the forefront of the new variable speed technology. A variable speed pumped storage system uses asynchronous generator technology to allow adjustment of the power consumed in pumping mode giving unprecedented flexibility and allowing the plant to sell additional network regulation services. This technology is especially significant with the increase in intermittent green energy sources like solar and wind feeding the grid.

Fish-friendly turbines
Protecting humanity goes beyond reducing pollutant emissions we need to preserve the balance of natural ecosystems. That is why Alstom recognises the need for fish-friendly hydropower and has developed fishfriendly turbine designs protecting migrating fish from harm. It gives fish a high chance of surviving passage through the turbine.

A partnership for performance

When you choose Alstom as your OEM, EPC or O&M provider you are tapping into a huge reservoir of hydropower know-how and experience. Our operating fleet provides a large amount of data that we use to establish benchmarks and best practices. This makes a real difference to the long-term efficiency and profitability of a plant. The performance potential of a hydropower plant is only partially determined at the manufacturing and construction stages. The best design and construction would be of little benefit if operation and maintenance were not fully optimised. That is why Alstom operates a global network of local service centres that offer a full range of packages and services: O&M contracts, consulting & support, spare parts, and field services. Our O&M goals are to maximise plant availability, improve energy efficiency and optimise component and system lifetimes through timely planned maintenance and suitable upgrades and retrofits. In accordance with our clean power strategy, commercial goals are never allowed to outweigh concerns about the environment and the health and safety of employees and local communities. As service and maintenance is not dependent on the origin of the components, all our solutions are offered for Alstom and nonAlstom equipment.

Hydro PlantLifeTM
Our Hydro PlantLifeTM programme segments operation and maintenance into three service modules, adapted to the age and condition of each plant:

ASSESS

It all begins with an assessment of the site, the current equipment or eventual damaged parts. We offer: hydro assets audit, condition assessments, reverse engineering, lifetime forecast analysis and technical site surveys.

SECURE & EXTEND

Our proactive services focus on securing operations and extending lifetime: modernisation and cost of ownership, lifetime extension, operations, maintenance and emergency repair, condition monitoring, penstocks and gates security, customer support line, spare parts and training.

RESET & UPGRADE

When a big change is necessary we can help with: change of operating pattern, upgrading, environmentally-friendly upgrade, or as-is replacement.

The latest variable speed pumped storage hydropower plant

Nant de Drance
Switzerland
With hydroelectricity making up more than 50% of the total energy produced in the country, Switzerland is naturally at the forefront of pumped storage technology. This project, designed to meet peak consumption needs, uses the innovative variable speed pumped storage technology by Alstom. Thanks to its energy reservoirs, a pumped storage plant can supply electricity to the grid at any time of the day, and provide an immediate and effective solution to bridge production bottlenecks.
