2013
Resource Evaluation with Surpac
Presenter Rowdy Bristol Dates (Perth):

19th 22nd March 2013 2nd 5th July 2013 26th 29th November 2013
The Course: Optiro presents a four day training course which has been drawn from industry best practice and twenty years of estimation experience with Surpac. The course covers the resource evaluation cycle and its requirements in a practical and useful manner. Over the four days attendees will take on the key concepts related to the processes from data collection and quality assurance through to classification. These concepts are reinforced through a large number of practical activities, all of which involve using Surpac on a real-life data set.

Outcomes: During the course attendees will: Understand the workflow required to create, validate, and classify a resource in Surpac Learn how to use Surpac to create and validate geological domains Understand how to create composites from raw sample data in Surpac within a domain Learn how to report and analyse statistical properties of a data set with Surpac Use Surpac to identify and perform topcuts Understand how to use Surpacs variogram maps to define anisotropy ellipsoid parameters Use Surpac to perform several different types of estimations Learn the many ways to validate a resource model using Surpac Professional development, training and mentoring for the mining industry Appreciate the key criteria for resource classification, and how to use Surpac to assign resource categories

Course Outline: 1. 2. 3. Introduction flow of tasks, key Surpac concepts Data quality using Surpac to perform validation checks on input data Geology and Domaining geology of a real-life data set, basic wireframing techniques and validation, assigning domain codes to drillholes 4. Data preparation compositing within domains, validating composites 5. Statistics understanding and reporting statistical parameters, topcutting 6. Continuity understanding and modelling variograms, using variogram maps to develop anisotropy ellipsoid parameters 7. Estimation understanding different techniques, using Surpac to perform estimates, optimising estimation metrics (e.g. block size, number of samples) 8. Validation using Surpac to validate a model against input data 9. Post-processing understanding change of support and recoverable resources 10. Classification and reporting understanding the Codes, using Surpac to assess and assign classification categories 11. Risk and uncertainty understanding the basics of simulation, and when it is useful 12. Reconciliation using Surpac to validate a resource model against grade control data The Presenter: Rowdy Bristol BSc, MSc Rowdy Bristol has presented hundreds of Surpac and resource estimation courses to thousands of participants worldwide over the past 20 years. Rowdy has a strong mining production background using and training Surpac as a geologist, engineer, and surveyor. Who should attend? The course is designed for geologists and mining engineers involved in resource estimation and evaluation using Surpac. We assume that you will be familiar with basic mathematical concepts, and you will have a basic understanding of Surpac databases, wireframing, block modelling, and macros. If you are unfamiliar with any of these areas, we highly recommend you attend the one day Surpac Geology Fundamentals course offered the day before this course starts. You do not need to know any geostatistics or matrix algebra! What do you need to bring? What will we provide? Attendees should bring a laptop with Microsoft Office and Surpac installed. Optiro will provide a course manual, activities and solutions, lunch and refreshments. A Surpac license can be provided for an additional fee. Attendee Feedback: I gained a good deal of value with Rowdy showing me various Surpac techniques The practical exercises using the software were most useful In-house Courses: As an alternative to our public courses we are able to present any of our professional development offerings at your minesite or operation. This is often a much more cost-effective solution; moreover, we can tailor the course content to your commodity or operation and use your data for the exercises and activities.
