LESSON A: INDIRECT QUESTIONS

BOARD GAME (SB p62)

The aim of this board game is for students to practice indirect questions in a funny way. Prepare with anticipation the questions, the cardboard, pieces of sticky paper which will work as counters and a dice. Below you will find the set of question and the board suggested; however, you could adapt them according to the needs of your group. In order to make the game more appealing, we suggest that you to write each question on a piece of coloured paper. Write the correspondent number on the other side of the paper and let that side visible to students. Paste all the questions on the blackboard. We also suggest that you draw the board on a cardboard, so it is visible to all the students. Instructions: 1. Get your students in groups of 2 or 3. There could be more students in one team, depending on the number of students. It is important that there are not too many teams, so all of them have enough opportunities to participate. 2. Paste the board and all the questions on the blackboard or on a wall, so they are visible to all the students. 3. Let each team throw the dice once as the order of the turns will be decided in that way. The team with the highest number will be the first in try to move and the last the one with the lowest number. 4. After the order is decided, let the first team throw the dice again. In order to move, they will have to choose the number of a question and transform it into an indirect one; they will only have 10 seconds to answer, in this way they can decide all together what their answer will be. 5. If a team does not answer correctly, the next one will have the opportunity to answer and move the correspondent boxes. This will be done until one team answers correctly, moving from team to team as fast as possible. 6. After the question is transformed, tell them the answer to the question. Some of the questions are strange and interesting, and your students may want to know the answers. 7. The winner will be the first team in reaching the end.

KEEP ON PRACTICING (SB p63) Asking information about famous people

The aim of this activity is to make students practice indirect questions in a freer way, by asking the required information about some artist in order to fill-in some blanks appearing in their sheets of paper. Prepare with anticipation photocopies of the cards with incomplete information about the famous people included in the students book. Instructions 1. Get your students in pairs. 2. Give each pair a set of cards about one of the famous people. 3. Tell your students that in order to get the information they need, they will have to ask INDIRECT QUESTIONS. Be very emphatic on this, or they may end up asking direct questions. 4. There are names whose spelling is hard. Tell your students to ask their partner how to spell the difficult names if they have problems with them. 5. Monitor their work, and make sure they are asking indirect questions.

You could give each pair of students the option to choose what famous people they want to ask questions to, in this way, the activity could be more interesting for them.

Your name is Theofillos Parthenios Papadiamantopoulos, which you just hate! You prefer to be called Tony Parr that is the way youre internationally known. However now you earn only 10,000 and they must not know that. You have lots of girlfriends but of course they dont know, so when you are asked about love you just say Im dating someone and never say a name. You visit your mom (in Greece) every month, but as she hasnt changed her way of living (she still looks poor), you dont want the others to know it. You can add as mucho info as you want toenjoy it! YOU ARE A fabulous journalist. Your work is well-known because you always make famous people tell you everything you want, even if they dont want! This time youre about to interview Tony Parr, a Greek actor. You know that he always hides his real name. Your main task is to discover it. You know he doesnt like to be interviewed and the only way he answer questions is when theyre very polite. There are rumors about his bad-temper. Some actors with whom he has worked say that when he gets angry its impossible to put up with him. (you can makeup any exemplifying story about that) You want to know more about his past, his culture and his childhood. It is said that some years ago he earned 25,000 USD per movie, but now he ears no more than 10,000. You want to know about that.
