Hello and welcome from Digital Film, Games and Animation.

Mike Smith Programme Leader mike.smith@leeds-art.ac.uk John Smith Course tutor john.smith@leeds-art.ac.uk Joan Smith Course tutor joan.smith@leeds-art.ac.uk This year we are presenting the final year of BA(hons) Digital Film, Games and Animation Top-Up programme. We are very proud of all the hard work and progress the students have made over the last academic year and indeed through their previous Foundation Degree. Digital Film, Games and Animation is a specialist programme of study that has allowed students to develop an in-depth understanding of the interrelationships between film, games and animation. As the students have progressed through their studies they have developed a professional and critical understanding of the disciplines to ensure that they understand the contextual, ethical and commercial concerns surrounding them. The course has equipped them with strong academic, critical, practical and technical skills that has enabled them to make an informed decision about the career paths that they may want to take. One of the strengths of the cohort this year has been their ability to collaborate with their peers not only Digital Film, Games and Animation but also across the other programmes at Leeds College of Art. This is an essential skill that will help them to progress and achieve their career goals and the creative industries become increasingly interdisciplinary. There is a breadth of work presented this year that included Concept Art, Storyboarding, Film Making, Visual Effects, Animation and Game Levels, Character Design and Game/Virtual Environments. The year has presented many challenges to the students both academic and personal and everyone has come out of the other side richer, both academically and as individuals. All of the students on the programme should have a real sense of personal achievement, they have worked exceptionally hard this year and we wish them every success for the future. The Programme Team

I am a Film Maker. In all aspects, from sound recording to editing, auditions and script writing, there hasnt been many a stone unturned. It has been a necessary endeavour in order to gain a fuller understanding of the production process. It is key to know every part of producing a film when directing one. This ideology has been useful so far throughout my degree but I am planning on homing in on a more specialist area for the future possibility of a masters degree or other training scheme. Currently I work with group of other students, under the name Klunk Creative. Between us we cater for film, graphics, web design and animation. We work as yes men in the media trade, taking on a variety of jobs to get our names out, and contracts in. My main interests lie in comedy, documentary and music, but always open for suggestion.

I have a great interest in computer generated imagery as a way to channel my art. The main influences which have driven me towards visual effects have come from my passion for special effects in film and my love for music video. Over the past 3 years I have developed a general skill set which includes Concept design, 3D modelling and animation. My current study has given me the opportunity to broaden my understanding of editing, compositing and motion tracking to allow me to combine 3D and film together. I am particularly interested in the integration between computer graphics and live action footage. In the future I see my self as a 3D generalist as I feel my skills and interests fit under a wide umbrella of concept art, 3D development to realisation. I enjoy bringing elements of fantasy and science fiction into the real world to inspire emotion through a visual moving image. I hope to one day contribute towards VFX in either film, television, games or advertising.

I like to make things that look nice and things that sound nice. Sometimes both at the same time. The past few years have involved the pursuit of that; learning the ins and outs of digital media, exercising an open mind and working off inspiration from everywhere. Animation has become my department of main interest, and I have tried my hand at the many aspects of the process, from character design through to sound production. Away from college, I work with fellow creative students under the umbrella of Klunk Creative, enveloping a variety of media outputs, on screen and in print. Working as part of a team is always a rewarding process that invariably leads to a healthy project. In the future I hope to continue to develop all skillsets I have put to use over the years and aim to distinguish myself as a vital team player, as well as an accomplished independent animator.

My passion is 3D modelling and animating using Maya and Mudbox software, with a focus on character design. In particular I enjoy developing character driven narratives with believable, well-formed characters within my animations. I love to develop and animate my characters, bringing my ideas to life. I want to produce characters that others relate to, enjoy and become immersed in. I also enjoy applying my 3D skills to motion graphics design using Cinema 4D and After Effects software. I can relate my modelling skills and knowledge of animation timings to create motion graphics containing 3D elements. Recently an animation I produced using these techniques was selected by Creative Networks to be shown as the introduction titles to their events. My development process includes traditional techniques and illustration techniques combined with the use of digital media to produce my final outcomes. This course has equipped me with strong practical and technical skills; coming from a fine art background I can enhance these traditional skills with digital methods. After leaving the course I intend to work as a freelance animator whilst looking for full time work within the animation industry.

I am an animator and illustrator based in Leeds. Specialising in character animation within traditional hand drawn, computer based 2D, 3D or stop motion animation; I aim to bring characters to life through animated movement. Within my Foundation Degree and final year of my top year Degree in Digital Film, Games & Animation, I have mainly focused on traditional hand drawn animation. By developing my understanding of hand drawn animation, I have been able to experiment and grow to expand my understanding of traditional methods, approaches and emotions through each piece of paper. By having this grounding of traditional animation, I have been able to apply the ability to break down, organise and create animations through exaggerated observation into various projects and mediums. As well as being a lover of animation, I do a lot of gaming, graffiti illustration, rock climbing and a few other outdoor activities. My main passion and past time however revolves around my desire to work within animation. I spend a lot of time watching various pieces of animation, from student work to feature films, to try and understand their methods and break down their animations in order to improve my own work and have fun! Within my future, I hope to one-day work in an animation company although I am still not certain whether or not to approach animation within games, having looked into the practice and tried it at a basic level. At this current moment in time, I mainly aim towards developing my animation language further through improving my observation and drawing skills and meeting more creatives.

My name is Jade Hodgson and I am a character concept artist and 2D character animator aspiring to work in childrens television programmes, film or advertising. Currently situated in Bradford I have been involved in various cross-country projects such as Light Night Leeds, the Feel Good advertising competition and illustrating the childrens book Amy Pleb and the Secret Tree. Ive worked in both groups and independently on a variety of projects within my course and this has allowed me to grow both professionally and personally. I have tried a variety of different animation techniques and feel my skills lie in 2D animation and although it takes a longer time to make than 3D, the results are worth while! It really gives you a real sense of accomplishment when you can finally see all the frames you have painstakingly drawn out be put together so it all comes to life.

Initially I came to Leeds College of Art wanting to work in film. After being introduced to 3D modelling and animating all that changed. I now consider myself a 3D modeller with a focus on hard surface modelling. I enjoy learning about all the different techniques and processes that Maya provides and performs. My current focus is on vehicle modelling, something that Ive always found exciting and challenging to produce. I have an interest in creating models that cannot be distinguished from the real thing and, with my dissertation focusing on special effects, I also have an interest in compositing my models into real-world environments. After I graduate I would like to work in a 3D visualisation company producing high quality models with a view to working with visual and special effects, such as compositing, later on.

I am an aspiring concept artist and illustrator seeking to establish myself in the world of entertainment design. Ive always been fascinated by fictional worlds; to design and create them has been both my goal and my passion ever since I learned such a career existed. In addition to the core drawing and painting skills that are my bread and butter, I have also developed, through collaboration, an understanding of development pipelines and practices that help contextualise my role.

My current interests lie in 3D computer generated imagery and I have spent the three years studying towards becoming a CGI generalist, specializing in digital modelling. I enjoy designing, modelling and creating elements of Visual Effects for films and games. I thoroughly enjoy creating innovative, imaginative and exciting characters, environments and assets and constructing them in 3D. My area of expertise lies in realising concepts through 3D modelling and sculpting. I also have a developing interest in the method of motion capture, the idea of capturing and adding realism through an actors performance to something that is fictitious and making them believable in our reality is an exciting concept to me. After graduation I plan to pursue a career as a CGI generalist within the film, games or advertising industry. I enjoy managing projects and getting the job done right and well, with aspirations of progressing up the industry ladder to a supervisory or managerial role within the film and games industry. One day I would like to say I took part in the production of a blockbuster hit and attends the red carpet premiere.

My passion lies within interactive media, anything that requires a sense of immersion and connection between a viewer and an artefact. The main focus of my studies and ambitions lies within a prominent area of the interactive industry, videogames. This medium is a truly immersive experience for the player, as they encounter lavish and exciting worlds, meet interesting characters and in some cases develop experiences that relate and reflect their reality. Within this medium I am a writer, a crafter of stories, in which my focus is on all aspects of immersion within the concept. In other words its not just a simple task of adding dialogue and in-game text. I enjoy the creativity of videogames in terms of developing a functioning narrative that will appeal and entice and in turn adds value and player-connectivity. To bring the concept to life, collaborative work is often key, in which I work with a group of creatives to develop and test a games immersive values. The experience gained from working as a collective has allowed me to understand more in-depth about the technical specifics of games design. This knowledge allows me to adapt new projects with the confidence that they are going to involve an efficient yet still creative workflow.

As an illustrator I have become flexible depending on the job I am presented with. Whether it be book covers, storyboards, concept art, graphic designs, what I enjoy most is the varied artistic licence I am given and the challenge of producing the most creative outcomes for the project at hand. I embrace the idea of trying new things, and look forward to working with others to design something that people can appreciate.
