Corrosion crack

Steel reinforcement,
in the alkaline environment provided by concrete, is in a
stable condition because a protective oxide layer forms on the steel surface,
which stops corrosion. There are, however, two situations where this
passivating environment at the reinforcement can be disrupted. The first is
known as carbonation. This is when atmospheric carbon dioxide dissolves in
water to form carbonic acid, which neutralises the concrete alkalinity. The
