DWARSRIVIER MINE
Students learn how Dwarsrivier Mine cares for the environment
Students from the University of Limpopo visited Dwarsrivier Mine on the 9th of May 2013. The International Association for Impact Assessment (IAIA) requested the visit. The students were all honours students in Environmental Management and for most this was their first visit to a mine. The group first received safety training before Dwarsrivier Mines Senior Geologist Mr Chris Letsoele gave a presentation that formed the background of their practical site visit. The students learned how Dwarsrivier Mine rehabilitates areas where mining has been completed, recycles water to maximise its use, dispose of various types of waste and manage their tailing dams. The group used their theoretical knowledge about environmental issues to find out how the Dwarsrivier Mine team copes with practical challenges surrounding environmental conservation and rehabilitation. Mr Humbelani Magau and Ms Thandiwe Buthelezi were the guides during the site visit and explained the practical challenges the Mine address on a daily basis. The visit ended with lunch where the group excitedly talked about how theyve experienced what they are learning in the classrooms of their university.

Mr Humbelani Magau explains about water purification and recycling.

Ms Thandiwe Buthelezi talks to the group during the site visit.

Mr Chris Letsoele (above and below), Senior Geologist at Dwarsrivier Mine gave a presentation about the Mine, where it comes from and how it operates. This formed an informative background to the practical site visit. The students were keen to learn more and asked questions that showed their interest in the mine and environmental issues.

R1451 millon Sekhukhune District Budget tabled

The Sekhukhune District Council and a number of guests took to Steelpoort Academy last week Friday to hear the Executive District Mayor, Cllr Mogobo David Magabe, explain explaied the political and strategic framework of the final budget proposal for the next financial year, starting on 1 July, to the council and guests. The Member of the Mayoral Committee responsible for Budget and Treasury, Councillor Lionel Seloane tabled the budget in the Council, highlighting al the figures. The debate about the budget is taking place today at the chambers of Fetakgomo Local Council. Mayor Magabe said the district municipality will focus on the successes of the past and improve upon it. He specifically mentioned bulk water infrastructure that has been completed, such as dams, pipelines and reservoirs, while also focusing on project such as the provision of more than 7000 toilets valued at R65 million. This year he said, there is a massive allocation of 38 169 VIP toilet units. Of these 14 517 are allocated to Greater Tubatse Municipality and 11 599 to Makhuduthamaga Municipality, with the rest allocated to the other three municipalities in the district. The Mayor said as part of our future plans, we will review the Water Master Plan so that we move away from water provisioning through RDP standard to household connections where we aim to improve the quality of service we render to communities. He also stated that the District Municipality is stable administratively, with all the key administrative positions filled, we are geared towards implementing all the deliverables guided by the five Mayoral priorities guided by the available systems and controls. Regarding the issue of the disclaimer audit the District Municipality received from the Auditoe General, Cllr Magabe we are pleased to report that the Auditor general has found significant improvements regarding the financial viablility of our District Municipality and the reduction of matters of concern. This is based on the fact that in 2010/11 the total number of audit findings that affected the report were 16, compared to only nine in 2011/12, that irregular expenditure was reduced significantly, that the standard of documents submitted was high and than in-roads are being made regarding the compilation and upkeep of the fixed assets register. Cllr Magabe announced that definite steps are implemented to obtain a clean audit through the implementation of an Audit Action Plan. Mayor Magabe made specific refence in his speech to the governments partnership with businesses such as mining companies in the Sekhukhune District, saying fruits of these partnerships is clearly evident, mentioning the Moptsepe Foundations donation of R10 million for enterprise development, the handing over of a R16 million water project by Marula Platinum Mine to the District and Lion Ferrochrome Smelters (Xstrata/Merafe joint venture) R50 million donation towards water projects. He also mentioned other mines that continue to provide quality service to communities through funding community development trusts, employment, bursaries and eterprise development. He called for strenghtening of these ties, assistance and development partnerships in the future and he congratulated communities for the peace that is prevailing amongst them and the mining houses. This truce should be cherished said the Mayor.

Makhuduthamaga Water and Sanitation Nkadimeng Bulk Water Scheme at the cost of R9million 89thousand, Nebo Plateau Bulk Water Supply at the cost of R172million 161thousand, Upgrading of Piet Gouws WTW and Piet Gouws Bulk supply and storage at the cost of R30million, Bulk Supply from Vergelegen to Mochadi at R45million, Magnetheights to Schoonoord Bulk pipeline and Schoonoord 5ml command Reservior at R45million, Sekwati Water Supply Project phase 2 and 3 at the cost of R3million 560thousand, Ga-Moloi Water Reticulation at R7million 391thousand 39rands, and Jane Furse Water Demand Management at R8million.

Safety pays off for Mr Moela

Tubatse Chromes SHEQ Department ran a competition into which employees were automatically entered if their departments or shifts were injury free for the duration of the competition. The stakes were high - a new car could be won. On 22 February employees gathered for the draw. A festive atmosphere with Zhazi, the Tubatse Chrome Mascot playing around. Ms Juanita Erasmus, SHEQ Manager and Mr Andor Esbach handled the draw with Zhazi making sure that everything is fairly done. The lucky winner was Mr Moela. The SHEQ Department is continuously striving for excellence and Tubatse Chrome employees know that caring for each other is not only a value, but a lifestyle.

Mapping your career path

The Womens Forum at Tubatse Chrome hosted a Career Day. Women were educated about the possible career paths at the company as well as the requirements for each position. This fun day was also a great way for the women to get to know each other.

Mr Andor Esbach congratulates Mr. Moela.

Team building for management

The Tubatse Chrome Management Team started the year off with a great team building and planning event. The group was treated to a game drive and learned more about the conservation of the leopard in the area.

Tubatse Chrome delivers to community

Tubatse Chrome delivered tools to local secondary schools in the area during February. Kgahlanong and Ngwaabe Secondary Schools form part of teh apprentice school progam hosted by Samancor Chrome Khphuka. The programs aim at developing essential skills to address the shortage of artisans. Tubatse recently sponsored tool boxes filled with essential tools, useful equipment, PPE and bench drills. Lydenburg High School also benefitted from donations.

Health Risk Assessments

During April employees at Tubatse Chrome were encouraged to go for Health Risk Assessments. This programme had their blood pressure, Body Mass Index, Cholesterol and Blood sugar tested.

Caring on Valentines Day

Employees received something special as they arrived at work on Valentines Day this year. Zhazi helped distribute the sweet treats.

High heels for a day

The Womens Forum dressed up in high heels for a photo shoot - just to show they are still women! This was naturally only done in areas where it is safe to do so.

The annual Shavathon was great fun. Employees contributed towards this worthy cause and coloured or shaved their hair in the spirit of caring for others. A nice sum of money was raised for Cansa through this effort.

Reward to catch those guilty

Stop signs from Leopards Bush towards Aloe Ridge were once again flattened over the weekend. A R500 reward is now offered for any information that will lead to the arrest and succesful prosecution of those responsible for this vandalism. Another problem area is the stop sign near Autozone. This one gets stolen as soon as a new one is placed at the corner of the street. Anyone with information that will help traffic officials to catch those guilty of vandalising stop signs can contact Chief Traffic Officer Superintendent Victor Lekwadu on 082 305 9031.

Is this a dollar sign?

Sections of the road through Steelpoort is being renovated and new road traffic signs have been installed. Trucks had in the past regularly parked in the area and made visibility for drivers of regular vehicles difficult. It also obstructed the traffic flow, especially during peak times. Chief Traffic Officer, Superintendent Victor Lekwadu told Platinum Gazette that they are clamping down on drivers who do not obey traffic signs, especially trucks in the Steelpoort area parking where they are not allowed to stop.

This is illegal
Attaching your advertisements to any road traffic sign is illegal and the Greater Tubatse Traffic Department will embark on an effort to hold transgressors of the bylaws accountable. Superintendent Victor Lekwadu, Chief Traffic Officer at Greater Tubatse Municipality told Platinum Gazette that should anyone be caught attaching their advertisements to road traffic signs they will be fined on the spot. They will also follow up where it is clear which business is responsible for the advertisements. Fines could be issued per sign. Recently in Johannesburg people were fined R10 000 per traffic sign to which advertising was illegally attached. GTM has channels in place for businesses to advertise next to the road. Enquiries can be directed to 013 231 1000.Anyone spotting a person attaching posters or other advertising material to a road traffic sign can contact Superintendent Lekwadu on 082 305 9031.
