ohns Gospel tells us that when Jesus breathed on the disciples, the Holy Spirit came into them, empowering them to forgive sins and to gather all people into union with one another. The book of Genesis had explained the divisions among nations with the story of the Tower of Babel. In rebellious pride, human beings had struggled to become equal to God. The result was chaos, strife, the inability even to speak the same language among themselves. Todays reading from Acts tells how the Spirit has just the opposite effect. Strangers from many nations hear and understand one another, each in his or her own tongue. This message of unity in the Spirit is repeated in the reading from Corinthians. There are many gifts, many ways to serve. One way is not higher, nor one person better than another. There is but one Spirit, who accomplishes all the different works we do, acting through us.

Respect Life
In 2007, the US Supreme Court upheld the federal ban on partial-birth abortion, a procedure in which a child is deliberately killed in the birth process. In that decision, Gonzales v. Carhart, the majority opinion states, Respect for human life finds an ultimate expression in the bond of love the mother has for her childIt is self-evident that a mother who comes to regret her choice to abort must struggle with grief more anguished and sorrow more profound when she learns, only after the event, what she once did not know: that she allowed a doctor to pierce the skull and vacuum the fast-developing brain of her unborn child, a child assuming the human form.

Golden Club

From the Pastors Desk

In a certain parish, in a land far, far away, the local bishop came to Confirm the candidates. They were all gathered in the center nave and with trepidation waited for the bishop to confirm them. The bishop approached one young woman and asked her name. It was Mary. The bishop then said, Dear Mary, can you please tell me what we say when we make the sign of the cross? She stood in place rather than replying. The bishop helped her by starting in the name of the Father, and of the Son and Finally, Mary responded Mom! The bishop then told her: this is a beautiful name for the Holy Spirit, who is truly like a mother. The Holy Spirit is our Comforter, which means we receive support and protection from the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit also remembers our needs, heals us, and strengthens us. Today our church becomes like the meeting place of the Apostles, in which, along with Mary, we await the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. We thank God the Father and His Son for the gift of the Holy Spirit and we open our hearts to his actions. Monday, May 27 we will mark the day of national remembrance of our beloved deceased. On Memorial Day there will be special Masses held at a number of cemeteries, for the intercession of all deceased and especially those who gave their lives for freedom and independence and whose graves go unattended or whose final resting place is unknown. In our church, there will be a single mass celebrated at 9:00 AM. In two weeks, on the 2nd of June, we will mark Corpus Christi. We invite all of you to a 2:00pm bilingual Mass with the outside procession. This comes as a great opportunity since on June 2, we in the Archdiocese of Chicago are calling to mind Year II of the Strategic Pastoral Plan, The Year of Sunday Mass. To be in solidarity with Catholics all over the world in Eucharistic Adoration on this day would be a profound way to observe both initiatives the Year of Faith and the Year of Sunday Mass. Fr. Rich
