Animal Farm
Task 2: 1. In Chapter one Old Major makes a powerful speech. What does Old Major tell us about the harsh reality of being a farm animal? Old Majors powerful speech tells us about the harsh reality of the farm animals massive shortcoming, because these animals work for others (humans) there whole life only to have the humans treat them with no respect and giving nothing in return for their services. He states that the animals should not accept how they are being treated and should stand up for themselves and retaliate against the humans who treat them so. And thus a rebellion began. 2. The animals decide on seven commandments to live by, Why do people construct systems of thought or rules to live by, provide one example? The animals decide on seven commandments to live by, humans have constructed systems of thought and rules to live by so that everyone gets a fair go and the world would have less anarchy and chaos. Because of these rules we must think about our actions and the consequences if we do go through it. People cannot go pushing others around just because they like it. These rules provide structure and a safer world for people to live. It is because of these rules and systems of thought that we arent afraid to have a say. For instance in Australia we have laws and if these laws are broken the court will decide what our punishment will be, hence we must think of our actions and decide if what we choose to do is the right decision. 3. After the rebellion there is a brief period of happiness and prosperity for the animals. What factors threaten to destroy this time of peace and equality? After the rebellion the factors that threaten to destroy this time of peace and equality is greed. The greed to have power and to take advantage of other animals just because they could made the pigs destroy this brief period of happiness and prosperity. Because the two parties that were in control didnt want to share their powers they were always scheming to take one another down. Instead of putting the farm animals that trusted and looked up to them for leadership the pigs did what they could to get rid of one another. They took advantage of the farm animals that wasnt educated to get more food (milk and apples) It is these crucial factors that had threatened the life of peace and happiness at the farm. 4. Education changes a persons perceptions of reality. In Animal farm the pigs introduce reading and writing class. They also use education to further their own agenda. Rind an example how education is used to further their own agenda: - To indoctrinate (force people to share the same views and values) Napoleons second hand in command Squealer had taken advantage and misused his powers and knowledge to gain more food such as milk and apples as he knew that the animals lacked education and knowledge and would fall for this idea. He had claimed that the milk and apples were needed for the pigs welfare and health, saying that this fact was proven by science and knowing that all the other farm animals didnt know anything about science due to that deficiency of knowledge.

The commandment was change to become All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others Even though the point of the rebellion was to eliminate the point of hierarchy all animals were intended to be equal but instead it was just replaced with another form of hierarchy. - As a way of learning a trade The animals found it to be astounded by the fact that the pigs were trading with humans however the pigs stated that they there was no such law that specified the prohibition of trading and the use of money. Squealer said that the only reason why the animals may recall this law was because they had fallen for Snowball, the traitors lies. Snowball had used the animals fear of being enslaved again to take advantage of them. 5. . Napoleon and Snowball have different perspective about how Animal Farm should be run. Summarise their two different perspectives and explain how each of the pigs tries to obtain leadership. - Napoleon Napoleon was a selfish greedy pig that advantage of his fellow farm animals, he was a very big and fierce pig and therefore he was very intimidating. He liked to get things that he wanted also he believed in dictatorship in which there was only one leader that took control and had a say in everything. And because of what he believed in and because of his greed he exiled and drove Snowball out of the farm and convinced the animals that Snowball was a traitor. He brain washed the other animals, distorted the animals reality, made them worship and believe every in which he believed. He then lived like a king while the other farm animals worked and worked believing that they were making there home a better place. - Snowball Snowball uses a different tactic than Napoleon instead of using force and threats to convince and brainwash the animals and tell them what to do Snowball uses his talents as a speaker to get the farm animals on board with his ideas. He believes that Old Major was on the right tracks and that all farm animals in the country should rebel against the humans just like they did. The promises that he makes to the farm animals are empty and though he does, take in their opinions Napoleons methods prove to be more effective. 6. Napoleon and Squealer often manipulate the truth to suit their own needs, in fact at times they completely re-write history. Explain one example where the pigs alter the truth. Napoleon and Squealer alter the commandments hence the truth to make their lives more comfortable. The original commandment was that No animals shall sleep in bed however they soon changed it to No animals shall sleep in bed with sheets They also changed the fifth commandment to No animals shall drink alcohol to excess The sixth commandment was changed from No animal shall kill any other animal to No animal shall kill another animal without cause eventually these were replaced with the maxims, All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others, and Four legs good, two legs better! blinded by there greed and because they are so power hungry they miss the fact that slowly they are becoming more and more like the humans. 8. Are the conditions on Animal Farm better, worse or the same under Napoleons leadership? Explain your answer. Before the rebellion the farmer treated them unfairly however they were still able to have some freedom. He may have been a drunken parasite however Napoleon is worse then the farmer, he acts as the farm animals friends even though he takes advantage of them and manipulates them. He promises the animals easier lives but this only makes them want to work harder. After the violent storm the animals find the windmill annihilated, Napoleon and Squealer convince the animals that it was Snowball, the pigs abuse their powers, imposing more control while reserving privileges for themselves. When the farmer was in control he treated the animals unfairly but together the animals shared everything with one another, they had a bond and helped each other out. Banded together to rebel. So therefore it is clear that the animals were far better under the famers rule. Task 3
