Writing

Letters REASON FOR WRITING Letters are written for a variety of reasons .these include: Giving information ,requesting information ,making compains ,making correction ,making suggestions ,asking for permission. Two or more of these reasons could appear in the same letter. Style: The style of writing in your letter can be formal,semi-formal or informal,depending on the rubric and the targhet reader.You should make sure you keep the same style troughout your letter. Layout: All letters should include the following: An appropriate greeting(Dear John),followed by an introduction with your opening remarks,and your reason for writing. A main body witch contains the information requested by the rubric A conclusion where you can summerise the main points and/or make reference to future actions .You should include your closing remarks,followed by an appropriate ending .

REPORTS
Reports are usually written for a person in authority .They normally contain some descriptions and often include our suggestions or recommendation for future action . Information is presented in separate sections.Each section has an appropriate heading to healp the reader easily indentify what the report contains. Reports usually begain with the following information in the top lefthand corner: To: . From: Subject: Date: . The first paragraph is usually a short section entitled Ppurpose or Introduction.It is important that we mention the reason for writing and prepare the reader for the information that we will include in the main body. The main body si divided into sections , each of witch starts with a heading .We should link our ideas with appropriate linkinh words and phrases.We need to use short sentences to make the information easy to understand . Reports end with a final section,often entitled Conclusion ,in witch we can: -summarise the points in the main body -make a recomandation for future action -offer a personal opinion Present tenses and formal writing are normally used in reportes.

For-and-Against Writing
When we write about the pros and cons of an issue ,we consider a topic from opposing points of wiew,outlining the adveantages and disadvantages. In the first paragraph we introduce the topic.In articles we may use any of the following techniques to make the beginning more interesting to the reader: -a reference to an imaginary scene or situation -adressing the reader directly -a rhetorical question -a quotasion The main body usually consists of two paragraphs .One presents the points for the issue,along with our justifications or examples.The other presents the points against the issue with supporting sentences. In the final paragraph we give our opinion and/or a balanced summary of the topic.To make the ending of the composition more effective ,we can use one of the following techniques : -state a personal opinion -give the reader something to consider -use a quotation or rethorical question Do not include opinion words(I belive ,I consider)in the introduction or the main body of compositions ,reports or articles. Pros and cons can be found in articles,compositions ,reports or letters .The style of writing is usually semi-formal or formal.

Opinion
Opinion articles or letters are written when we want to express our personal opinion on a particular topic.They can be articles for publication ,compositions for a class assignment ,letters to the press/authorities,or letter to a friend .They should include relevant information to support our opinion ,and use an appropriate style depending on who is going to read the piece of writing . In the first paragraph we should introduce the topic and state our opinion clearly .If we write a letter giving our opinion ,state the introduction by giving the reasons for writing. The main body consists of two or more pharagraphs each presenting a separate wiew point supported by reason/examples .We can alse write a separate paragraph witch states the opposing wiewpoint. The finale pharagraph summarise/restates our opinion usung different words.
