Center for Composite Materials

Centre for Composites Materials was established in the year 2009 as an interdisciplinary centre for carrying out teaching, research, design and development in the field of composite materials and their applications. The centre has dedicated laboratories for composite materials processing, materials testing, composite machining and deposition. The centre is taking effort to produce eco friendly high performance materials. This research centre is partially funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST). Objectives of the Centre The objectives of the centre is as follows Producing Natural fiber reinforced polymer composites by employing methods like hand lay-up, compression moulding, etc. Producing naturally woven fiber based composites Investigating the Mechanical properties, weathering behaviour, surface modification of composites Machining studies of Metal-Matrix Composites (MMCs), Functionally Graded Metal Matrix Composites (FGMMCs) Studies on electroless composite deposition process

Compression molding machine is used to prepare polymer composites and sheet molded composite. Using the heating system a good cure cycle can be followed for better property achievement. Compression can be given up to 30 Ton.

Composite Testing Laboratory: Mechanical Properties like tensile strength, compression strength, flexural strength, impact strength, wear strength etc can be done in this laboratory. Tensometer is used to measure the tensile, compression and flexural strength of the fabricated composites. For the analysis of the results, the various important output parameters like ultimate strength, modulus of rigidity, etc could be found using these testing. The proposed equipment model is DTRX-30kN twin screw, manufactured by Deepak Poly Plast Pvt. Ltd, Gujarat, India. Mechanical vice type grip for sample thickness upto 14 mm & grip width is up to 150 mm is used for specimen clamping. LCD display for the load at yield and break for better understanding. In addition, a proposal on Machining studies of Functionally Graded composite Materials is to be submitted to CSIR. This project is to be submitted by Dr.J.T.Winowlin Jappes in collaboration with Dr.J.P.D.Rajan, National Institute for Interdisciplinary Science and Technology (NIIST), Trivandrum. Dr.M.Uthayakumar will be submitting a project Development and characterization of composites using redmud industrial waste to DST (FAST TRACK).
