Read the novel aloud as a group in the form of shared reading. Pupils to read one page aloud per lesson Pupils to produce a mini book report on the novel which will be displayed in class Pupils to act out dialogue from various sections of the novel (pair work). Bingo! Activity to introduce pupils to difficult words from the text. Home Education Listening and Speaking Focus on use of adjectives and nouns in a given extract to set the scene (chapter 2). Descriptions of Skellig close reading of language, adjectives, nouns, verbs and similes.
Copies of novel Detailed writing frame for pupils to prepare an indepth and personal book report Study booklet of activities for discussing and writing issues raised in the novel.
Differentiated aims (three per lesson) Reluctant readers encouraged to participate by reading as little as a paragraph or half a page. (Noone to be forced.) Writing frames designed with open questions for able pupils. Worksheets with structured tasks and checklists for pupils who need them. ICT / Laptops to be used by pupils who find it difficult to write their ideas down. Assessment in both listening and speaking as well as writing.

Writing a poem about something people can both love and hate. (For classroom display) Writing text about snakes for a picture book for primary school children. Creative writing writing a short story The Spider (for classroom display). Using an extract from Silas Marner to inspire pupils to write a description of A Modern Miser.
Written work The Spider to be marked in accordance with KS3 attainment levels.
Skills
Review of situations when we use capital letters, and pupils practice by putting capital letters into a text as appropriate.
Spelling list of words related to content in class. Spelling lists provided and tests weekly.
