Differentiation
Read the novel aloud as a group in the form of shared reading. Pupils to read one page aloud per lesson Pupils to produce a mini book report on the novel which will be displayed in class.

Pupils will research a theme and will deliver a 5 minute presentation on their subject. They will also have 5 minutes to answer questions. To comment on how writers from another culture view their community and peoples perceptions of that community.
Read the poem Stereotype by John Agard and describe the stereotypical West Indian portrayed in the poem. Pupils will write their own poem inspired by this (classroom display).
Written work will be marked and feedback given to pupils with targets of how they can make progress.
To examine how authors portray life in different historical and social contexts. To compare the work of two major writers from different times and cultural contexts. (Jane Eyre and Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry)
Reading and editorial from a womans magazine and identify the arguments both in favour and against school uniforms.
Writing
Write an essay comparing and contrasting own experiences of school with that of the school on Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry.
Writing frames for essay to be structured for extra guidance for pupils who need extra support. High achieving pupils to be given more challenging targets on their task sheets.
To recognise strengths and weaknesses when spelling. To spell high frequency words accurately. To improve knowledge of common errors made when writing and to practice avoiding them.
Interactive PowerPoint presentations for pupils to learn the rules in context, with examples. This will be followed by practice (pairwork and individually). A variety of worksheet activities designed to improve use of singular and plural agreement, verbs, comparatives and double negatives and miscellaneous common mistakes.
