What makes us ache? Lack of sleep, stress, posture, injury, muscles, exercise and weight.
What to do? Build strength and stamina with a muscle training routine 2-3 times a week.
More muscle can help you perform both extraordinary and ordinary physical tasks without
straining. Muscle also helps support your posture, which reduces fatigue, back pain and
other body aches.

Ice or Heat for Healing

Heat and cold have opposite effects which can aid
the healing of muscle strains and injuries, depending on
the timing and type of injury. Here are some self-care
guidelines:

Co l d reduces blood flow to the injured area by

constricting the arteries. This decreases bleeding,
muscle spasm and pain. Cold is also a vital compo-
nent of first-aid therapy; it reduces swelling, which can
also reduce recovery time. Remember: RICE - rest,
ice, compression and elevation. Ice or cold packs are
generally used for the first several days after an acute
injury. Keep a damp cloth between the cold pack and
your skin. Apply for 10 minutes twice a day.

H e a t increases blood flow to the injured area by

dilating arteries. This can help promote healing in the
sub-acute or chronic phases of an injury after swelling
has subsided. Apply a heating pad or warm pack to
the affected area for 15 minutes twice a day.

Whether using cold or heat, be careful to avoid frostbite or burns to your skin.

Watch your Step

Talking on your cell phone while leaving the office? Reading a report as you walk to your
meeting? Watch it - many office accidents happen when people are trying to do too many
things at once. Running into walls, desks, filing cabinet drawers and other protruding objects
typically occurs when people aren’t paying attention.

Shaking Hands
A critical factor in giving a good first impression...or not? It is said two things determine suc-
cess: What you know and how well you communicate what you know... Often the second is
more important than the first.
When it comes to handshaking techniques:
Always push your hand in all the way to meet web-to-web, with your fingers together and
your palm straight out and thumb up. Never give a finger tip hold or short handshake, which
is commonly just squeezing the other person’s hand. Remember a good, professional hand-
shake is completed by shaking a woman’s hand no differently than a man’s hand.
