Last week Loyolas Late Night with the Hounds kicked off the 2012-2013 mens basketball season that head coach Jimmy Patsos, the players and student fans all hope will match the success of last years Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) tournament championship team. This season the Greyhounds look to defend their MAAC title before moving to the Patriot League next year. Last year the Greyhounds were 24-9 overall, 13-5 in conference games and received a NCAA tournament bid, where they fell in the first round to Ohio State 78-59. Denzel Brito, a junior and transfer from Loyola University Chicago, remarked that the seniors are ready to make the most of the teams last season in the MAAC. Its their last year here, and they really want to go out with a bang, he said. Coach Jimmy Patsos admits that it is really tough at the college basketball level to repeat a championship, but is hopeful for this years season. Remember, he said, we came in third [last year]. We didnt win the league; we won the tournament. So I would like to win the league this year. Besides the addition of Denzel Brito, Loyolas mens basketball team has six freshmen joining the squad this year. Joining the frontcourt are forwards Will Rassman and Josh Forney; joining the backcourt are guards Damion Rashford, Eric Laster, Sean Tuohy Jr. and Jarred Jones. Coach Patsos said that Josh Forney and Sean Tuohy Jr. are going to redshirt this year and probably will not play. Freshmen Jarred Jones and Will Rassman, however, will potentially have some court time. We have an older team, Coach Patsos remarked, but our freshman play. Loyola students are also getting in on the excitement. Nicole Fornabaio, a freshman at Loyola, explained that last year, even before she was at Loyola, she was keeping up with the Greyhounds success in the MAAC and NCAA tournaments. Ive got most of the players names and numbers down, she commented, laughing. I cant wait to go to a couple of the games this year. Coach Patsos is excited to have enthusiastic students, like Nicole, supporting his team. Weve had to earn their respect, he said. This is a great place to play because of our student fans. The Loyola mens basketball season begins Monday, Nov. 5 with an exhibition against Seton Hill at 7:30 in Reitz Arena.
