By: Haleigh Morgus Katie Sheahin led the Hounds with 19 points in Loyola womens basketball home opener and 88-45 loss to the No. 5 ranked Maryland Terrapins Sunday night in Reitz Arena. Sheahin, a 5-foot-10 senior guard, had 12 points in the first half and kept the Lady Hounds within range of catching the Terrapins for the first 20 minutes. Late in the first half freshman guard Diana Logan made a layup to get the Greyhounds within three, 21-18. After getting down 41-25 at the half, however, it was a long and hard struggle for the Lady Greyhounds to keep up in the second. After consecutive three-pointers by Marylands junior guard Katie Rutan that gave the Terrapins a 57-33 lead with 14:16 left in the second half, the Lady Hounds couldnt get any closer than 20 points the rest of the game. Coach Joe Logan was attributed in the Baltimore Sun saying, I thought we hung with them for 22 or 23 minutes, but then we started battling their bigs and it got away from us. We had some good looks in the second half, but we just missed them. Caroline Trainor, a dedicated fan and freshman on Loyolas club basketball team said, They did well on ball movement, but they need to know when to take shots and they need to work on driving and rebounding. The girls played their hearts out, commented Erin Ferry, a senior at Loyola and the teams manager. There was not one player who came off the court with anything left in the tank. Their hard work definitely caught Maryland's players off-guard, and they gave them a good run. Senior forward Tianna Hawkins led the Terrapins with a record high 33 points. Maryland went 31-5 last season and won the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament with a 68-65 win over Georgia Tech in the finals. The Lady Terrapins went to the NCAA tournament and lost to Notre Dame 80-49 in the Elite Eight. The 0-2 Lady Hounds travel to Catonsville, Maryland on Saturday to take on the University of Maryland Baltimore County Retrievers at 2 p.m.
