Currently in New Zealand immunisation is offered against 11 serious preventable diseases. These diseases have complications which include long term health effects, brain damage, blindness and even death. Common childhood diseases of the past are now rarely seen so it is easy to forget the devastating effects of them. Some research says this is thanks to immunisation.

How does immunisation work?

Usually vaccines contain a tiny bit of the bacteria, virus or toxin that causes the disease it will protect against. Some vaccines are live while others are modified versions of the bacteria, virus or toxin. The body produces antibodies in response to the immunisation so that if the person should come in to contact with the actual disease their body will be able to recognise it and fight it off effectively.

Breastfeeding is the first step in helping baby develop his or her immune system. Antibodies and other immune factors are produced in breastmilk along with lactobacillus bifidum, or friendly bacteria. Breastfed babies get fewer infections than those given formula. A non toxic environment e.g. natural fibres for clothing and bedding, natural cleaners rather than harsh chemicals and a pesticide free garden all help to keep babies immune systems strong. Avoiding antibiotics where possible, lots of sleep, fresh air, a stable routine and unconditional love will aid in making a healthy, happy baby. Some people choose homeopathic and naturopathic remedies to prevent and treat diseases.
