A4The Orange County Register Sunday, September 1, 1985 'NIGHT STALKER': SUSPECT CAPTURED The following dates are

the significant developments in the "night stalker" case since he struck in Orange County. Sunday, Aug. 25: William Cams, 29, was shot three times in the head and his girlfriend, 29, was sexually attacked about 2:40 am. while they slept in their Mission Viejo home at 24411 Chrisanta Drive. It was the first attack in Orange County by the "night stalker," believed responsible for at least 14 slayings and 33 attacks since March. Monday, Aug. 26: Los Angeles County sheriffs investigators announced they were searching for a 1976 orange Toyota station wagon seen by witnesses near the Mission Viejo attack. The car was reported stolen from the Chinatown area the previous Saturday while its owner, Bill Gregory, was eating dinner. Tuesday, Aug. 27: Authorities released a modified composite sketch of the suspect, described as 6 feet tall, in his 20s or 30s with curty hair and gapped and stained teeth. The composite also showed him wearing a black baseball cap. Wednesday, Aug. 28: Investigators found the stolen car in the Rampart police district in Los Angeles. The car was towed to the Orange County Sheriffs Department to be searched for clues. Thursday, Aug. 29: Officials said the serial killer may be responsible for as many as 16 slayings that started as early as March. Friday, Aug. 30: Los Angeles and Orange County authorities announced the name and description of a suspect in the "night stalker" attacks and issued a statewide bulletin for his capture. They said a fingerprint lifted from an orange Toyota station wagon reported near the Mission Viejo attack helped lead'to the identification of Richard Ramirez, 25. They also said the print matched others taken from property that had been stolen two days before the Aug. 17 attack on a San Francisco couple. Doctors said Cams is expected to recover. Saturday, Aug. 31: Ramirez was captured after a group of citizens in East Los Angeles saw him trying to steal a car by ordering a woman out of the driver's seat and punching her in the stomach. The woman's husband grabbed a fence post and struck Ramirez in the head and a mob caught him. Los Angeles County sheriffs deputies arrested Ramirez.

legwork leads to
By Edward Humes The Register A battery of state-of-the-art computers labored to uncover the identity of the so-called "night stalker." But it was old-fashioned legwork by a pair of San Francisco detectives that first named Richard Ramirez as a suspect. The race to identify a suspect in the case ended in a near photo finish late Friday afternoon, when the very human job of knocking on doors and checking out hundreds of "night-stalker" sightings paid off just minutes ahead of the electronic efforts of a $22.5 million computer. After 20 straight hours of work, state Justice Department technicians in Sacramento were rewarded with the clatter of a computer printout listing 10 possible matches to fingerprints believed to belong to the serial killer. The prints were obtained Thursday by Orange County sheriff's investigators from a stolen car believed used by the killer in his most recent attack, a Mission Viejo sexual assault and shooting. The prints were sent to Sacramento for a computerized search. But before the computer.list of possible suspects could be studied, a San Francisco detective phoned the Justice Department. The de- tained from the car, then comtective, Inspector Frank Falzon, pared it with hundreds of thousuggested that state criminal files sands of others in its computer on Ramirez be pulled and manual- memory. But old-fashioned police ly compared with the fingerprints work scored first in this case, department spokesman Duane Peterfrom the car. Leads from several crime scenes son conceded. The department defended the crimes. : The break in the case came via performance of the ultrasophisticated computer, which enhanced the burglary investigation, not the and scanned the faint print ob- probe of the killing, Falzon said. The "night stalker's" trail led San Francisco police from that burglary to the small coastal city of Lompoc, 150 miles north of Los Angeles. Police there said Saturday that they had developed information last week that led San Francisco police to name Ramirez From Lompoc, Falzon and his partner, Klotz, traced the suspect to San Pablo, a small town 15 miles from San Francisco. Ramirez attempted to buy a shotgun there Friday afternoon, a gunshop owner said. Information gained in San Pablo which Falzon again declined to specifyled to the conclusion that Ramirez was a prime suspect. The investigation may lead to .still more killings being attributed to the "night stalker," San Francisco authorities said. "We only have one (the Pan case) confirmed so far, but others are being looked at now," Inspector Michael Mullane said. "I've been 15 years on the homicide detail," Falzon said, "and I've never seen a case like this that had people women, children, grown men so fearful. This case rocked the whole state." The next step is for investigators to come up with a case that can be proven in court, he said. "Now the hard part begins."
