Unit Expectations and Teamwork Week 12 SelfAppraisal Reflection

Unit Expectations In Reflection 1 I discussed what I thought would happen during the semester in regard to the major assignment and teamwork. My first expectation was that I would have effectively learnt how to work as a team. I also expected that I would have encountered some problems while working in a group. Lastly I expected that I would be able to effectively resolve the problems encountered. Mc Williams (2008) explains there is a general model of work- group behaviour. Inputs (group composition, member roles); processes (group norms, cohesiveness and development) and lastly outcomes (group performance). I have experienced all while working on the major 3B assignment. I have experienced various member roles; one as a group member and the next as a group leader. By doing this I have learnt how to effectively and efficiently work as a team/group. I have also experienced how to work in a team with individuals I am not familiar with. In the 3B assignment I was expecting to have some problems in group workings and dynamics; as I did experience in the 3A assignment. As a leader in the 3B assignment I was also expecting to resolve any major problems; which I will now discuss in the next paragraph. Team Conflict/Problems Experience has thought us that group work is not problem free. Who hasnt heard people complain about having to attend what they consider to be another time-wasting meeting. There is also social loafing the tendency of some people to avoid responsibility by free riding in groups (Schermerhorn, et al. 2004, p.435). I have seen the experience of social loafing in the 3B assignment. There were individuals in the team whereby they did the minimum work on their PowerPoint slides. The other group members had to fix up their slides which took up their time. The other members were forced to complete the PowerPoint slides since the presentation was marked overall as a group. If I was to do this assignment again I would be more vocal and set goals more clearly in what should be expected in the group. I would also be less vague in my directions and have clear dot points on what should be completed. Fogler & LeBlanc (2008) discusses the top ten problems in groups. One of the problems Fogler & LeBlanc (2008) list is reluctant participants in the group. In our group we did have an individual that was reluctant in giving their voice and opinions to the group. The strategy that was used to minimise the problem was encourage everyone to participate. Ask opinions of quiet members and encourage them by validation (Fogler & leBlanc 2008, p.29). By doing this we received the individuals opinions and voice. Peer Review As can be seen in D. F. Barker (2008) peer review form most group members worked satisfactorily during the course of the assignment. I have learnt that there is at least one individual that is not as in sync with the rest of the group and that needs extra help. I have also learnt that some individuals can actually hinder the rest of the group than to help it excel. You also have to prepare that individuals may drop out of the group and you must always have a backup plan if this does happen.
