Questions 26 - 30 Read the passage below and answer the questions that follow. 1 For ten-year old Robin Hayes, the summer holidays involved a peaceful stay at home with frequent wanderings around the empty spaces that surrounded his home. One Sunday afternoon, Robin decided to take a walk out to the thick jungle area about three miles away from his isolated home situated in the outskirts of the city and away from the main roads. Bidding a quick good-bye to his parents, Robin made a hasty retreat out of the backdoor, taking only his dog for company. Robin followed the routes that he knew like the back of his hand. As he walked along with his dog following closely and faithfully behind him, Robin looked out for the various species of birds and insects. Spotting one particularly unique looking bird, Robin ran after it. Jumping over a log, he accidentally stepped into a ditch and felt something roll beneath his feet. Almost instantly, Robin felt an intense pain in his right foot. Looking down, he saw the huge head of a rattlesnake, its jaws tightly clamped over his entire foot. As Robin watched in horror, the reptile began to slowly gnaw at his shoe so that its fangs pierced the leather and became embedded in the tender flesh just below his ankle bone. To Robin, the pain was unbearable and for a while, he seemed about to lose consciousness. Through his blinding pain, however, Robin was aware that his dog, Jimmy, was trying desperately to get the snake off his foot. The little dogs efforts seemed to prove futile until in utter desperation, Jimmy tore at the snakes head. Then and only then did the snake release its grip and slither off into the bushes. Robin sank to the ground and tried to keep calm. He dimly remembered his father saying that panic would cause the venom to rush to the head at a much faster speed. Hanging on to his rationality, the young boy tried to survey his options. His foot was beginning to swell and had already gone numb. In his condition, Robin knew that he would not be able to make the three mile walk back home. Robins father was watching television when his youngest son came running in with the words Robin got snake bit. Without a word, Bob Hayes jumped up and followed his son into the kitchen. Robin was lying unconscious on the floor while his mother sat sobbing beside him. Being bitten by rattlesnakes was not an unusual occurrence due to the jungle area close to their home but thus far, Bob had only encountered such incidents with his farm animals. Seeing his son lying on the floor with a huge bluish gash on his foot, Bob was at a loss as to what to do. With their home so far away from the city and the hospital, Bob knew that the only thing that might 1

possibly save his son was to drive him to the hospital himself since calling an ambulance would take too long. Quickly, he lifted his son in his arms 40 and rushed out to the car. Placing Robin in the back seat beside his wife, Bob started the engine and sped out onto the highway. Bob drove as fast as he could. Suddenly, the engine began to sputter. Checking the gauge, Bob realized that the car was overheating but carried on driving until the engine died completely and the car came to a stop. Bob 45 got out of the car and started waving his arms frantically. Not realizing his sense of urgency, the other drivers merely ignored him and swerved around him instead of stopping to help. Desperate, Bob went back to the car and lifted Robins limp body out. He then held it in his arms and practically stood in the middle of the road. Within seconds a truck stopped and Bob 50 and his wife hurriedly carried Robin in and directed the driver to the nearest hospital.
