Data Acquisition Processing & Interpretation

The Company

GeoPro is an international operating exploration company that offers a variety of geophysical services to the oil industry. The head office and processing centre is located in Hamburg, Germany. GeoPro employs an experienced staff of geophysicists and instrument engineers, who are supported by a team of qualified field technicians. The company was established in 1994, and has since concentrated on providing a range of world-wide seismic services for both off- and onshore data acquisition and processing. Data processing, modelling, and seismic analysis are undertaken in the Hamburg office using state-of-art software. Our seismic research group is developing innovative seismic techniques and new hardware for the acquistion of seismic data. Our engineering group is optimizing the capacity and reliability of GeoPro's proprietary instrumentation. Among the new and developing technologies that GeoPro is currently pursuing are the development of new Ocean Bottom Seismographs (nodes) for 4D data acquisition, the implementation of OBS technology with vertical hydrophone arrays in deep water and of horizontal arrays for shallow water and transition zones, 3D refraction migration and the application of PS converted waves in exploration are further issues of our interest. GeoPro is known to the industry for its ability to innovate and respond quickly to new developments, for added benefit to its clients. GeoPro's key service is Wide Aperture Reflection/Refraction Profiling (WARRP). The WARRP technology developed by GeoPro can image subsurface structures by wide aperture arrays in areas with penetration problems, such as salt layers or diapirs, complicated thrust belts or basalt flows. WARRP surveys can be conducted onshore or off-shore using the Ocean Bottom Seismometers (OBS) nodes, or within transition zones. Data is recorded using SEDIS technology, which is a light-weight, robust, autonomous data digitizer and recorder that can continuously record six channels over a period of up to 28 days at a sampling period of 2 milliseconds. A stable temperature-controlled crystal-oscillator clock provides accurate timing for the recording unit, and this internal clock is calibrated against GPS-derived time before and after the recording period.

Data Acquisition Processing & Interpretation

Onshore, the WARRP surveys are very effective in regions where logistic difficulties or seismic penetration problems limit the use of standard seismic instrumentation and techniques. The SEDIS instruments are extremely portable and their autonomous recording ability can reduce operational costs and provide maximum flexibility for acquisition in rugged terrains. The WARRP technique is also ideal for reconnaissance surveys. The WARRP data provide high-resolution and accurate velocity models that can be used in standard processing and in prestack time and depth migration. Marine surveys using the OBS instruments (node technology) can aquire high quality compressional and shear wave data, either in connection with a standard marine reflection survey (in a piggy-back arrangement), or as a WARRP survey. The SEDIS V recording unit is at the heart of the Ocean Bottom Seismograph (OBS), which is designed to record a hydrophone and 3 geophones on the seafloor at depths down to 6000 meters. The advantage of using OBS technology is the excellent noise to signal ration and the independence of weather conditions. Also the ability to record both P and S waves using 3-component seismometers is a technical advantage of the system. OBS units also record converted PS data that permit to develop Vs-velocity models.

Single OBS
with Vertical and Horizontal Streamer Vertical Streamer for Deep Water Operations
For deep water operations we developed a vertical streamer with 6 channels that can be connected to the Ocean Bottom Seismograph (OBS). The 6 hydrophone channels are equidistantly distributed along the streamer. Separation of the channels is in the order of 25 to 50 meters. Other separation offsets are possible, depending on the requirements of the project. Recording examples are presented below

For shallow water operations transitional zones, a hydrophone streamer with 6 channels was developed, as presented below.

Double OBS
Ocean Bottom Seismograph for long time recording
GeoPro's double-sphere Ocean Bottom Seismograph (OBS) has the capacity to record up to one year continuously, depending on battery configuration and sensor type. It is applied in micro-zonation studies for engineering purposes, in seismicity surveys and active / passive tomography. It can also be applied in oil field services for reservoir monitoring. Recording is obtained by a SEDIS V or VI recorder. Sensors can be variable, depending on the problem to be addressed.

Buoy for Seismicity and Tsunami Telemetry

GeoPro's second generation permanent marine seismological station has a new type of buoy build of yellow Polyethylene with 8mm thickness which has a buoyancy of 2.4t. It contains the SEDIS seismic processor unit, the radio transmitter and modem and the power supply of the system. Four 12V gel batteries provide the station with the necessary power which is renewed by solar panels. The robust construction requires minimum of maintenance and the station can be serviced also by a small boat since the instrumental container is easy to remove and support. The broadband sensor is placed at the sea bottom in a glass sphere housing and can be removed from the sea floor without having to lift the buoy. The system can be also used for meteorological, oceanographic and Tsunami observations.

3D Potential Field Modeling

GeoPro has developed a gravity and magnetic modeling tool that can handle models of any complexity. It is based on a full 3-D grid approach with the model space being discriminated by rectangular prisms of constant size. Geological or geophysical information can easily be incorporated into the model. GeoPro offers acquisition and interpretation of marine, land and airborn gravity and magnetic data. Definition of Initial Model A set of main surfaces is imported into a 3-D grid. The algorithm used allows a time efficient development of complex models. The first run computation of the potential field presented below requires 5 minutes on a Pentium II 400, and decreases to 1-2 minutes for subsequent model modifications.

Vertical model slices with observed and calculated potential fields along different profiles and a simple view of the model are shown.
