GRADE KINDERGARTEN CURRICULUM AND TEXTBOOKS

Kindergarten is normally a year in which young children are taught to play with other children; to be away from their parents for several hours a day; to learn some songs; to possibly learn some numbers, the alphabet, and how to print their names. We disagree with that philosophy. We think children are ready and eager to learn at approximately 4 1/2 to 5 1/2 years of age. Not to give them a real learning opportunity leads only to frustration on their part. We also believe, based on solid scientific evidence concerning the myelinization (development) of the nervous system, that by the end of their Kindergarten year, most children do possess the fine motor skills to write in cursive. Therefore, we put children in Kindergarten for a full year and they begin a complete learning schedule. Next year, they will progress into First Grade. The master theme of this year's study will be to expose the student to the traditional Catholic religious philosophy which permeates this program. Students will also begin to experience the formalized learning process which is the basis of our program. They will learn some simple math, beginning reading, handwriting, science, etc. We will begin slowly so that the student has the opportunity to adjust to our program. Religion: The tutor will teach this subject using an informal discussion method. A special book has been written, Chats with God's Little Ones, which is a catechism arranged for short informal discussions with the child. It includes related art projects and semester evaluation tests. There is a second small book, Leading the Little Ones to Mary, which will also be used to explain our Faith. The student will be introduced to the Bible by having the tutor read to the child from the New Catholic Picture Bible. Each day the student should say the rosary and on Friday, say the Stations of the Cross. Other books used: The Rosary Booklet; The Way of the Cross Booklet. Arithmetic: Learning to identify numbers and to count from 1-100 will be the initial study in this subject. It will progress to simple single digit addition and subtraction up to the 6's. Children will also learn to tell time. Books used: Arithmetic Instruction Manual, Drill Pages & Review K, & Counting Workbook. Phonics and Reading: The phonics system is primarily used for teaching reading. A new Catholic reader, Little Angel Reader A Text, and its accompanying Little Angel A Workbook, form the centerpiece of the Phonics and Reading. The student will begin by learning the phonetic letters and sounds (called phonemes), but will also learn the alphabet at the same time. There will be phonics learning games, exercises, and tests to help the learning process. Other books used: Little Angel A Teachers Manual; Phonics is Fun 1 Workbook, & Phonics is Fun 1 Teachers Edition.
Handwriting: Initially, the study of handwriting will begin with hand printing, using the workbook Writing Capital and Small Letters. In the last quarter (beginning in the 30th week), the study of cursive handwriting will begin and will remain the major part of this study. Through Catholic Writing Skills K, it is our intention to teach the student good cursive penmanship in preference to only hand printing as taught in most schools. Science: At this grade level, science in school should consist of some very rudimentary concepts being introduced to the children through a methodology that shows them that the study of science can be enjoyable, while making connections between the tenets of our Holy Faith and how we can see God's mark on all things around us. Accordingly, the science study will consist of some basic knowledge about God's creation, particularly about ourselves, the weather, the seasons, seeds, animals, and recreational environments. The students will have some science activities to complete in the new Catholic work text, Science & Living in God's World Kindergarten Text, written especially for young Catholic home scholars by OLVS staff. Art: The student's artwork will consist of five religious coloring books, as well as art assignments from the religion book, Chats with God's Little Ones. They can be used to reinforce the various subjects discussed in the religion lessons. The five religious coloring books are: Catholic 123 Coloring Book, About Angels Coloring Book, Catholic ABC Coloring Book, Jesus Our Savior Book 1 Coloring Book, and Our Mother Mary Coloring Book. Music: The student will be encouraged to learn the words to several Catholic songs and hymns, and American folk songs, and to sing them as often as possible. This will be in an effort to preserve the traditions of singing patriotic, folk, and old Catholic songs and hymns. Music book: Songs for God and Country Book, which includes all words and music to the professionally produced recording of the same name, available on both audiocassette and CD. Seatwork and Homework: Extra practice work for phonics and arithmetic will appear in the form of seatwork and homework. Workbook used: Seatwork Book.
GRADE 1 CURRICULUM AND TEXTBOOKS

The master theme of this year's studies will be to further develop the basic learning talents so the students can have a better understanding of all subjects. Please note: Most children start First Grade at approximately 5 1/2 to 6 years of age. We recommend that children who have not had any Kindergarten or pre-school training, enter our Kindergarten class before starting in First Grade. If they can handle the Kindergarten material easily, we can quickly move them to First Grade. First Grade is more difficult than the normal first grade curriculum in most other schools. Religion: The tutor will teach this subject using Living in God's Love Text, a traditional catechism program reproduced from the 1940's, which is based upon the questions and answers of the Baltimore Catechism. The book provides a complete, integrated, and basic course in religion. The purpose is to ensure that the pupil has a clear and adequate knowledge of his holy faith. There will be six readers used. At first the tutor can read the booklets to the students. Later in the semester, the students can read the books by themselves (with a little help). Each day the students should say the rosary, and on Friday say the Stations of the Cross. Other books used: Living in God's Love Syllabus & Teacher's Manual; Living in God's Love Workbook; Living in God's Love Workbook Answer Key; Miniature Stories of the Saints (Set of 4 books); God Loves Us All; Good St. Joseph; The Rosary booklet; The Miracles of Jesus; The Way of the Cross booklet. Arithmetic: The year will begin with a review of the math basics learned in grade Kindergarten. The students will then be challenged to expand their ability by increasing the size of the numbers worked for addition and subtraction until they are able to handle double digits. There will also be story problems to work. books used: Lepanto Math Level 1 Workbook; Lepanto Math Level 1 Answer Key; Arithmetic Instruction Manual; Drill Pages and Review 1. Phonics and Reading: The phonics system of reading will be taught. The students will continue to learn the phonics letter sounds while developing their ability and vocabulary. The Phonics and Reading program will be centered around the Little Angel Reader series. In the Little Angel Reader B and C Texts, the students will learn lettersound relationships systematically, beginning with the easiest letter-sounds. Word drills provide practice in decoding words containing the letter sound. Stories with phonetically-controlled vocabulary follow each word drill page. There will be phonics learning games, exercises, and tests to help the learning process. The Little Angel B & C Workbooks reinforce lessons from the readers with exercises in phonics, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and handwriting. Progress Tests are included in the Little Angel B & C Teacher's Manuals to assess the student's mastery of skills after each review. Phonics is Fun 2 Workbook is also assigned. Students will expand their reading ability by reading eleven more advanced basic readers, including the Catholic National Reader New Primer and Book One. Other books used: My First Prayer Book; My Life with God; My Day with Jesus; My Friend Jesus; Phonics is Fun 2 Teacher's Edition.
Spelling: A new work book, the Traditional Catholic Speller & Workbook 1, is assigned in the lesson plans for spelling and spelling-related activities. The student will learn to spell nearly 300 new words, a portion of which are Catholic words appearing in their catechism lessons. There are also inspiring Catholic poems for children to hear and later to read themselves. Other book used: Traditional Catholic Speller 1 Answer Key. Handwriting: First, a review will be made of hand printing. Thereafter, most of the year will be spent on daily practice of handwriting form. book used: Catholic Writing Skills 1. Science: This year's science study will consist of a curriculum centered on the worktext, Science & Living in God's World 1 Text. The world around us is presented through the fascinating story of creation, and God's care for it through the operation of His laws. Children find the other text, Seaside & Wayside Book 1, a fascinating look at various sea creatures. Abundant situations are provided for the children to observe the unfailing functioning of God's plans and laws in living and nonliving things. The students can read, or have read to them the delightful little stories contained therein. Other book used: Science & Living in God's World 1 Answer Key. Grammar: Voyages in English 1 & 2 Texts, and Voyages 1 & 2 Teacher Manual provide key practice in basic English grammar and writing skills. History: The history text, America My Country Text, is a forty-eight page work-text about the flag, America's founders, the Indians, the Pilgrims, Daniel Boone, Pioneers, transportation, etc. There are various activities throughout the book and pictures may be colored by the student. Art: The students' artwork will consist of five religious coloring books, which can be used to reinforce the various subjects discussed in the religion lessons. books used: 24 Catholic Songs Coloring Book; Holy Name of Jesus Coloring Book; Stations of the Cross Coloring Book; Ten Commandments Coloring Book; Jesus Our Savior Book 2 Coloring Book. The master theme of this year's study is to refine those primary concepts learned thus far in both Grades Kindergarten and First Grade. The aim of this year's curriculum is to focus on melding previously learned math and language skills, while introducing more challenging scientific concepts. Emphasis will be placed on teaching the primary gradelevel student to be able, and willing, to apply traditional Catholic ideals to their academic endeavors and to their everyday lives. Religion: The tutor will teach this subject using Living in Gods Law Text, a traditional catechism program reproduced from the 1940s, which is based upon the questions and answers of the Baltimore Catechism. The book provides a complete, integrated, and basic course in religion. The purpose is to ensure that the pupil has a clear and adequate knowledge of his holy faith. The students will learn more about the Bible by reading the New Catholic Picture Bible. They will also read two smaller religious readers. Since this is often the age for preparation and reception of First Holy Communion, there will be a special study made of My First Holy Communion, a very traditional catechism written for this purpose. We strongly encourage the students to recite at least five decades of the rosary each day, and on Friday to say the Stations of the Cross. Other books used: Living in Gods Law Syllabus & Teachers Manual; Leading Little Ones to Mary; I Believe in God; The Seven Sacraments; The Rosary Booklet; The Way of the Cross Booklet. Arithmetic: This year students will expand their abilities up to three-digit adding and subtracting, multiplying tens, division, telling time, word problems, speed tests, and much more. Books used: Lepanto Math Level 2 Workbook; Lepanto Math Level 2 Answer Key; Review and Worksheets (Gr. 2) Phonics: As in previous years, phonics will be the basis for word attackskills in reading. The students will continue to learn and become proficient with the various phonemes (single- and multiple-letter sounds) while developing their vocabularies. Using the Little Angel Reader D Text, students will practice decoding words containing a variety of the more difficult phonemes. Stories with phonetically-controlled vocabulary follow each word drill page. Little Angel D Workbook reinforces lessons from the Reader with exercises in phonics, vocabulary, reading comprehension, and handwriting. Progress Tests are included in the Little Angel D Teacher's Manual, for the purpose of assessing students' mastery of skills after each review. Workwill also be assigned from Phonics is Fun 3 Workbook. Other books used: Phonics is Fun 3 Teachers Edition. Reading: The students will expand their reading ability by reading the following books: Catholic National Reader 2; CNR 2 Answer Key, Ten Commandments; Mary My Mother; St. Peter the Apostle; Blessed Kateri Tekakwitha; Stations of the Cross; Angels. Grammar and Spelling: The students will learn how to recognize and write a complete sentence; to capitalize, use correct punctuation; use suffixes and prefixes; to divide
words into syllables; alphabetize words; and much more. They will learn to spell 680 new words, including Catholic terms, and their meanings. Books used: God Gave Me the Gift of Language 2 Text, God Gave Me the Gift of Language 2 Answer Key; Traditional Catholic Speller & Workbook 2, Traditional Catholic Speller 2 Answer Key. Handwriting: Students will continue to practice and perfect their penmanship so that it is similar to the suggested handwriting form and very neat and readable. Workbook: Catholic Writing Skills 2. Science: This course will consist of studying Science & Living in God's World 2 Text, which covers the plant world, insects, rocks and soil, the sun, how plants reproduce, and various means of transportation. The accompanying Science & Living in Gods World 2 Teacher's Manual, which also contains activities for the children, provides the parent with more background information on each concept studied, so that for more advanced or interested students, each topic may be discussed at a more in-depth level. Additionally, students will enjoy the science reader, Animal Life. Geography: The students will be introduced to basic skills in reading maps, charts, and graphs. This unique series blends reading and writing skills with social studies instruction. Students will explore communities and neighborhoods through critical thinking activities and compelling text. It offers plenty of practice and reinforcement in social studies and geography skills. Workbooks: Maps, Charts, and Graphs B & C. Art: The students artworkwill consist of four religious-oriented coloring books: Our Lady of La Salette Coloring Book; Eucharistic Adoration Coloring Book; Come to Mass Coloring Book; Let's Follow Jesus Coloring Book. These books can be used to reinforce the various topics discussed in the religion lessons. Music: The student will be encouraged to learn the words to several Catholic songs and hymns, and American folksongs, and to sing them as often as possible. This will be in an effort to preserve the traditions of singing patriotic, folk, and old Catholic songs and hymns. Music book: Songs for God and Country Book, which includes all words and music to the professionally produced recording of the same name, available on both audiocassette and CD.

The master theme of the Third Grade is to complete the process of learning those necessary primary skills learned thus far in Grades Kindergarten, 1 and 2. In many ways, it will be a year of tying up any and all loose ends from the primary years, with an emphasis on perfecting and focusing the core skills. The children will learn to apply traditional Catholic ideals to all their academic endeavors, as well as to their everyday lives. The aim of this year's curriculum, then, is to complete the learning of previously covered math and language skills, while preparing the children for the more challenging middle elementary grades and their concomitant topics and concepts. Religion: This year, students will be reading and studying Living in Gods Grace, 3. This is the third book in the Living My Religion Series. Living in Gods Grace Syllabus and Teachers Manual 3 contains the answers to the exercises and tests assigned on the lesson plans. The authors of Living in Gods Grace hope to lead a child to appreciate grace so that he/she will always strive to live in Gods grace. The children will be reading some biblical stories and memorizing some Baltimore Catechism questions. Students will be reading selections from the Picture Book of Saints. The students will again be encouraged to say at least five decades of the rosary each day, and on Fridays, to say the Stations of the Cross. Other books used: The Rosary Booklet; The Way of the Cross Booklet; Book of Saints Part 1. Arithmetic: This years study of arithmetic will cover new addition and subtraction facts; meanings of numbers to 10,000; adding and subtracting up to three figures; Roman numerals; subtracting two digit numbers with borrowing; multiplication and division using numbers up through eight, and many story problems. The textbook is Lepanto Math, Level 3 Workbook and the Answer Key. Phonics and Reading: Now that the students have mastered the phonics rules, they will be encouraged to do a great deal more reading. They will read about the lives of some of the saints, and will enjoy the various selections of the Catholic National Reader 3. They will be tested for comprehension of subject matter. Students will continue to perfect their use of phonetics by reviewing the pronunciation rules and methods taught in the lower grades. In preparation for more advanced reading, students will be required to apply all of the phonics rules learned in previous years. Other books used: Book of Saints Part 2; CNR 3 Answer Key; Just Stories; More Saints of the Eucharist; Mother of God Coloring Book; Our Lady of Fatima; Parables of Jesus; Promises of the Sacred Heart; Saints of the Eucharist; St. Francis of Assisi; and St. Paul the Apostle. Grammar & Spelling: In the work text, God Gave Me the Gift of Language 3 Text, the students will study the rules and then answer work problems on sentences, capitalization, punctuation, plurals, synonyms, antonyms, writing letters, using the dictionary, nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc. Spelling and spelling related activities will be assigned each week in the newly revised Traditional Catholic Speller & Workbook 3. The students will practice penmanship in the Writing in Cursive Hand 3. Other books
used: God Gave Me the Gift of Language 3 Answer Key, Traditional Catholic Speller 3 Answer Key. History: This course is a basic survey, from a Catholic perspective, of the discovery and settling of the new world as well as the growth of the colonies into a new nation. The period covered is from the Norse explorations through the American War for Independence. The, How Our Nation Began Text is a Lepanto Press reprint of an older Catholic text. Other books used: How Our Nation Began Text Book Answer Key; How Our Nation Began Workbook, How Our Nation Began Workbook Answer Key. Science: This year's science course is presented in the same format as that of last year's, with a basic text, Science & Living in God's World 3 Text, supported by the more indepth explanations and activities in the Science & Living in Gods World 3 Teacher's Manual. The eight topics to be covered this year will include: everyday science used in the design and building of a modern home; helping with the garden; establishing an aquarium; experimenting with electricity; studying the moon; enjoying life in the spring, how things around us work; and visiting a state park. Other books used: Seaside & Wayside Book 3, Science & Living in Gods World 3 Quiz & Test Book. Art: This year's art program will include the physical act of creating art on a basic level. Three Catholic coloring books are used in which the students are allowed to create their own color selections within pre-drawn religious drawings. The second part involves the appreciation of art by using the Art-Lit Reader, Primer & Book One, which contains numerous illustrations of art work in conjunction with prose and poetry. Other books used: 7 Sacraments and Works of Mercy Coloring Book; St. Frances Cabrini Coloring Book. Music: The student will be encouraged to learn the words to several Catholic songs and hymns, and American folk songs, and to sing them as often as possible. This will be in an effort to preserve the traditions of singing patriotic, folk, and old Catholic songs and hymns. The master theme of the Fourth Grade is to expose the children to concepts requiring higher level cognitive thinking and reasoning. This will be the beginning of a more advanced scholarship, whereby children will not just memorize information and data, but will understand ideas more deeply. They will apply knowledge learned and begin to work in the abstract and theoretical realms. Children should begin a genuine fine-tuning of their study habits. As in previous years, children will be encouraged to apply Catholic philosophy to their daily lives. Religion This year, students will be using Living for God, 4. This is the fourth book in the Living My Religion Series. Living for God Syllabus and Teachers Manual 4 contains the answers to the Exercises and Tests assigned on the Lesson Plans. You may also want to read Preparation, Presentation and other suggestion for activities (such as starting a Project Book) in the Living for God Syllabus and Teachers Manual 4. These may help to teach the topics in the book. This year we are also introducing the book, Sunday Morning Storyland Sermons for the Childrens Mass by Rev. Wilfred J. Diamond. This book contains a story to complement each Sunday of the liturgical year. There is a reminder in the Comment Section of the Lesson Plans to read the story that corresponds with the current Sundays liturgy. Arithmetic: This year, we begin the Saxon Math series. Saxon 54 Text is at the core of the Math 54 course, which leads off the mid-elementary level sequence. Under the Saxon plan, the students study math using what is referred to as the incremental method, with previously studied and mastered skills interspersed among the repetitive reinforcement drills of subsequent lessons. Saxon labels its program as integrated, which means that it includes varied content, such as basic number concepts, estimation, functions, two and three digit computations, geometry and even algebra. Saxon has found that the continual and incremental practice with word problems, measurement, scale and graph reading, as well as arithmetic, provide the opportunity for students to learn and remember the foundational skills and concepts of mathematics. The threebook set Saxon 54 Set includes: Saxon 54 Textbook; Saxon 54 Tests & Worksheets Booklet; Saxon 54 Solutions Manual. Reading: All of our students are encouraged to do a great deal of reading, not only in conjunction with the curriculum, but for enjoyment and expansion of their horizons. In fact, one of the best reasons to encourage students to read is that independent readers tend to be the best writers. Experience has shown us that the most avid readers make the best students in general, and the most articulate writers, in particular. We also encourage children to read as many books of a religious nature as they can. Books used: St. Thomas Aquinas; Little Therese; Catholic National Reader 4, which is an anthology of edifying selections from the large deposit of Catholic literature, as well as some secular stories; Art-Lit Reader Book Two; CNR 4 Answer Key. Grammar & Spelling: This year, we begin the Lepanto Grammar/Voyages in English series in earnest. The Catholic school edition of Lepanto Grammar/Voyages in English
opens with grammar lessons on familiar themes and topics, such as pets, characters in books, holidays, daily work, courtesy, and our country. Assignments from the Lepanto Grammar/Voyages 4 Text are keyed to those of Lepanto Grammar/Exercises 4 Workbook, with the lesson plans designed in such as way as to ensure that the same grammatical concepts are covered concurrently in both books. In Spelling, the students will learn hundreds of new words with their meanings. Spelling and spelling related activities will be assigned each week in the newly revised Traditional Catholic Speller & Workbook #4. Other books used: Lepanto Grammar/Voyages 4 Teacher Manual; Lepanto Grammar/Exercises 4 Teacher Key; Traditional Catholic Speller 4 Answer Key. For extra phonics practice, Phonics Word Study E Workbook is available as an added option. Handwriting: Students will continue to practice and perfect their penmanship so that it is very neat and legible in Writing in Cursive Hand 4. Science: The Science and Living in God's World series continues this year with a more in-depth look at the earth, living creatures, our bodies, and natural resources. The Science & Living in God's World 4 text is the backbone of the course, with the Science & Living in Gods World 4 Workbook for reinforcing the concepts studied in the text. Other books used: Science & Living in Gods World 4 Answer Key. Geography The students will have the opportunity of studying geography from the newly reprinted My World of Neighbors Text, a 1965 Catholic school textbook, updated by our publishing arm, Lepanto Press, with current information on countries and cities, including name changes, as well as new sections on Australia and New Zealand. Using the professionally printed beautiful new oversized hardbound edition (which boasts clearer illustrations and photos), students will take a trip across the United States from New York to Hawaii. Then they will travel around the world, through Africa, South Asia, South America, and Oceania. Other books used: My World of Neighbors Text Answer Key. Other books recommended, but not in the Lesson Plans: My World of Neighbors Workbook; My World of Neighbors Workbook Answer Key. Music: At this time, we do not require Music as a mandatory subject in Grades Four and above. Music, however, should still be emphasized, both in a general sense, and in specific musical disciplines, such as: (1) the learning of an instrument; (2) music history (3) music appreciation; or (4) music theory. For newly entering students, we will continue to encourage the use of the OLVS book and CD, Songs for God and Country, while for those who have been with OLVS in previous years, we encourage that some study of music be continued.

The master theme of the Fifth Grade is to continue emphasizing concepts requiring the child to apply higher level cognitive thinking and reasoning. This builds upon the previous year's exposure to the idea that concepts can, and should, be applied in various circumstances; and that this, rather than simple memorization of information, is true scholarship. Students will continue to practice applying knowledge they have learned, and will increasingly work in the abstract and the theoretical realms. Students will continue to fine-tune their study habits and, as in previous years, will continue to be encouraged to apply Catholic philosophy to their daily lives. Religion: This year, students will be using Living Through God's Gifts,5. This is the fifth book in the Living My Religion Series. Living Through God's Gifts Syllabus and Teachers Manual 5 contains the answers to the Exercises and Tests assigned on the Lesson Plans. You may also want to read Preparation, Presentation and other suggestion for activities (such as starting a Project Book) in the Living Through God's Gifts Syllabus and Teachers Manual 5. These may help to teach the topics in the book. The other part of religion for this year will be devoted to becoming more familiar with the old rite of the Mass, sometimes called the Tridentine Rite Mass. Students will learn about the prayers of the Mass, and about the best method of assisting at Mass, by studying The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass Text. Some church history will be studied by reading short selections from the Picture Book of Saints. Each day the students should say the Rosary and on Friday, the Stations of the Cross. Other books used: The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass Answer Key; The Rosary Booklet; The Way of the Cross Booklet. Arithmetic: Those students who successfully completed Saxon 54 in the Fourth Grade will be studying Saxon 65 this year. Saxon Publishers describes their mathematics program for this year as containing arithmetic content ranging from basic combinations, to arithmetic with whole numbers, decimals, and fractions, including word problems, measurement, scale and graph reading. The three-book set Saxon 65 Set includes: Saxon 65 Textbook; Saxon 65 Tests & Worksheets Booklet; Saxon 65 Solutions Manual. Reading: Again this year, our students are encouraged to do a great deal of personal reading. It is our sincere hope that all students will develop and cultivate a love of good books and reading. This year, we continue with the Catholic National Reader Series, with assignments from the first half of the Catholic National Reader 5. Also assigned in the lesson plans are various books, including Blood Red Crescent (story of the Battle of Lepanto); Blue Gonfalon (story of the first crusade); The Good Master; Patron Saint of First Communicants. Other book used: CNR 5 Answer Key. Grammar & Spelling: This year, the Lepanto Grammar/Voyages in English format changes to the structure it will follow through the Eighth Grade: the first half of the text is dedicated to compositional activities, while the latter half of the book emphasizes the study of grammar. The compositional portion of the book emphasizes creative writing on a variety of topics and in diverse circumstances. The grammar portion deals with the different parts of speech, as well as sentences and punctuation. The student will learn to
spell and know the meanings of hundreds of words, both of a religious and secular nature. This study will stress how God, as the Creator of all things, has designed our bodies as well as all matter around us in a wondrous way. History: The students will have an opportunity to study the older (1964) Catholic American History Textbook which was written by Monsignor Goebel and Sister Mary Richardine. The time period covered in the text runs from the discovery and exploration of America, through its colonization, independence, growth, division and eventual reunification, and culminating with its emergence as a world power in the 20th Century. The master theme of the Sixth Grade is to round out the concepts learned in the middle grades, completing the mastery of these fundamental skills while directing the child to applying, as opposed to simply learning and comprehending, those concepts and skills. To prepare the student for tackling the more difficult course content of the 7th and 8th Grades, more strenuous assignments, including questions requiring higher level thinking, will be introduced this year, particularly in Reading and Science. Additionally, now that students are expected to be able to think on a more abstract and theoretical plane, they will accordingly be required to apply the tenets of their Holy Faith in that realm, and throughout their studies. Religion: A combination of doctrine, saints' lives, and Catholic traditions, this year's course will see the completion of the Baltimore Catechism 3. The students will develop the good habit of daily reading of the Lives of the Saints, in which there are approximately 435 accounts of special feast days and saints lives. A special treat will be the reading of Treasury of Catechism Stories, an anthology of some of the most delightful stories of our Faith that we have found. Each day, the students should say the rosary with the help of The Rosary Novena Booklet, and on Fridays, the Stations of the Cross, using The Way of the Cross Booklet. Arithmetic: This year the students will be using Saxon 76. Concepts incrementally practiced in the text include: fractions, decimals, percents and ratios; perimeter, circumference, area and volume; exponents, scientific notation and signed numbers. Students continually practice problem-solving techniques through word problems, and reinforce concepts taught in previous lessons. The text is straightforward and easy to read. The three-book set Saxon 76 Set includes: Saxon 76 Textbook; Saxon 76 Tests & Worksheets Booklet; Saxon 76 Solutions Manual. Reading: All of our students are encouraged to do a great deal of personal reading. We want youngsters to read for enjoyment, as well as for edifying their Faith. We have tried to find a good mix of both in the books we have chosen for this year's required reading. The main reader will again be the Catholic National Reader 5, the second part of which will be completed this year. The students will also read Art-Lit Reader Book Three, which will give them a brief exposure to some art, poetry and prose by some of the world's most highly respected artists and writers. Grammar and Spelling: This year's grammar study will be a further extension of what was studied in the Fifth Grade. Additionally, students will have creative grammar activities centered on such topics as: Speaking in Class; Writing a Paragraph; Writing Letters; Books and Dramatizations; and the World of Inventions. In both the activities and grammar sections of the text, the topics appear to be a review of what was covered last year. In fact, while many of the same topics and parts of speech are emphasized, the level of the discussion in the text, and consequently the course material itself, is much
more in depth. In Spelling, the students will learn to spell hundreds of new words, including Catholic terms, with their meanings. Science: In this year's science course, the students will study the universe (specifically, the stars, our sun, our solar system, the planets, the moon, man in space, origin of the universe, etc.); basic chemistry (measurements, matter, elements, atoms, energy and chemical laws, molecules, etc.); and basic physics (machines, energy, sound waves, light, aerodynamics, etc.) While many of these topics have been covered in previous years, the students (and parents) will find that the levels of difficulty and complexity increase with each succeeding year, with specific concepts being explored more in depth. History: The student will be studying Our Old World Background Text, an older (1955) Catholic school World History textbook written by Monsignor Goebel and Father Quigley, both of whom were professional life-long Catholic educators. The study will start with the early civilizations, travel through the Greek and Roman Empires, through the years of early exploration, ending in the Protestant Rebellion of the sixteenth century. The students will learn about some of the glories of the Catholic Church, its heartaches and setbacks, and its glorious martyrs and faithful defenders of the Faith. Handwriting: Students will continue to practice and perfect their penmanship so that it is very neat and legible in Writing in Cursive Hand 6.

The master theme for the Seventh Grade will be to encourage the students to fine-tune their skills in applying concepts learned, at more in-depth cognitive levels. Students will further be encouraged to develop good study habits as the course content becomes more complex. We will also begin preparing the students to enter the adult world as productive members of their community, as always, ready, willing, and able to apply traditional Catholic ideals and beliefs to their daily lives. Religion: This year, 2011, Book Seven of the Living My Religion Series, Living for Triumph, will be implemented. The student will learn the knowledge and the love of God that he can readily use in his daily life, and learn about the manifold graces that will come to him as a member of the Mystical Body of Christ. This book uses the Baltimore Catechism to complete the study of catechetical questions and issues. Ultimately, though, the main emphasis for students will be on the living of their Faith. There will also be a more thorough study of Bible History, along with daily reading of the Douay-Rheims New Testament. Each day, the students should say the Rosary with the aid of The Rosary Novena Booklet, and on Fridays, say the Stations of the Cross from The Way of the Cross Booklet. Arithmetic: We continue this year with the sequential study of Saxon Math, with Saxon 87 as the text for Seventh Grade. (Saxon 87 is also used by some Eighth Graders who have not had a rigorous formation or background in math, prior to beginning Algebra.) Saxon 87, the newest addition to the Saxon elementary level courses, was designed to close a gap that had existed between Saxon 76 and Algebra 1/2. Accordingly, Our Lady of Victory School normally requires successful completion of Saxon 87 before attempting Saxon Algebra 1/2. In Saxon 87, basic mathematical concepts and skills are reviewed and reinforced. Students will study fractions, decimals, percents, and ratios; delve more deeply into perimeter, circumference, area, and volume; and receive a solid grounding in exponents, scientific notation, and signed numbers. Literature From the great treasury of Catholic literature, the books to be read and studied this year will include Stories of Don Bosco, and Flame of White, the biographical novel about Pope St. Pius X. To present the best of both secular and Catholic authors, students will be reading the new Lepanto Press reprint, The Gauntlet, a fictional adventure of fourteenth century jousting tournaments, chivalry and honor, and also selections from Catholic National Reader 6, an anthology which contains many beautiful essays and extracts of various kinds, including that highest of literature-poetry-- as well as oratorical and dramatic selections on the most interesting and edifying of topics. Other book used: CNR 6 Study Guide with Answer Key. History: This year's history course centers around the older textbook, Our Pioneers & Patriots Text, by Msgr. Furlong. The book recounts the founding of our nation, beginning with the circumstances surrounding the problems between the Colonies and "Mother England." Msgr. Furlong also does a thorough job of exploring the Catholic roots of our country. We meet the great heroes and heroines of the United States, and learn how the Catholic Church has fared in our country. The time period covered in the text runs from approximately the time of the French and Indian War (mid-18th Century) to World War II. An accurate account of history is provided by Msgr. Furlong, without excessive display of partisan sympathies toward political philosophies, and with sound Catholic doctrinal interpretations. The more advanced 7th Graders may find the readability of this text at a level somewhat below their abilities; however, the text is so beneficial in helping students better understand the foundations of our nation, that nearly all students will find Our Pioneers & Patriots Text interesting and enjoyable reading. Students will also enjoy reading Across Five Aprils, a bittersweet historical novel about one family's trials, set against the backdrop of the War between the states. Science:Continuing with the Science & Living in Gods World series, this year's science program covers Science and the Scientific Way; anatomy and physiology, the Linnaean classification system along with the study of plants; the sun and energy; astronomy, cartography, and time; and a study of matter. The master theme of the Eight Grade will be to develop in students all of their cognitive and affective skills learned up to this point, by applying principles, concepts, and ideals in a much wider field of study than they have had in the elementary grades. The students will now be required to make a special effort to thoroughly develop good study habits in preparation for the more difficult subject matter which they will encounter in the high school years. Even more so than the previous year, students will be prepared in earnest to enter the adult world as productive members of their community, able to steadfastly defend their Faith. As in all previous years, our students should be ready, willing, and deftly able to apply traditional Catholic principles in all circumstances of their daily lives. Theology: St. Augustine was once asked how to teach religion. He wrote a book to answer the question and in it he principally made two suggestions. The first was that the teacher should tell the story of God's love for man in historical order, beginning with the first book of the Bible. He advised the teacher to relate the incidents in such a manner that the causes and reasons of the various events and circumstances would be plainly visible. In this way God's love could be seen and appreciated. The teacher, he continued, should also strive to lead those being instructed from faith, to hope, to charity. This year, the students will be studying Book l of the Quest for Happiness Series, Our Goal & Our Guides Text. This first volume accents faith and tells the story of the Divine Love that led God the Father to create us and promise a Redeemer. OLVS has written very complete Answer Keys, as well, for each of the four books in this series. Other books used: The Rosary Novena Booklet, The Way of the Cross Booklet, and My Imitation of Christ. Arithmetic: This year the students will be using Saxon Algebra . Saxon has designed this text to render second nature the use of fractions, mixed numbers, and decimal numbers in all operations. It is also designed to facilitate procedures for solving simple word problems. The concepts of area, percent, ratio and order of operations are discussed at a much more in-depth level than in any year previous to this. The beginning concepts of algebra are practiced thoroughly, as well. The three-book set includes: Saxon Algebra Textbook; Saxon Algebra Test Forms; Saxon Algebra Answer Key. Saxon Algebra Solutions Manual is also available, and strongly recommended. Grammar: The Catholic School Edition series of Lepanto Grammar/Voyages in English will be completed this year as the student is assigned various creative activities within the topics of public speaking, writing, telephone courtesy, drama, and reading good books. Lepanto Grammar/Voyages 8 Text, like the texts of the previous three years, has a dedicated grammar portion in the latter part of the book. Grammatical concepts will be examined in much more detail, and the more complex aspects of English grammar will be studied. The books to be read include: Men of Iron by Howard Pyle which is a story of the days of chivalry and knighthood in England in the fourteenth century; Grisly Grisell which is a heart-warming tale of perseverance, swift battles and numerous displays of true virtue; and a historical novel about the suppression of the Catholic Faith in the British Isles, Outlaws of Ravenhurst by Sister Imelda Wallace, S.L. The second half of the Catholic National Reader 6, with its beautiful stories and stirring poetry, will be studied for a significant portion of this academic year, as well. World History This course of World History, based on the text, The Old World & America Text, will give the student a thorough understanding of the Catholic roots of our Western Civilization. Beginning with the fall from Paradise, this book covers ancient times, the Greek and Roman world, the coming of Christ and the founding of the Catholic Church, the Middle Ages, Renaissance, Protestant Revolt, and the exploration and colonization of the New World. Christ and the saints are presented as great historical figures in their proper surroundings in time, bringing alive the Church's impact on our society and culture. Frequent exercises reinforce learning and many pictures acquaint the student with the most famous persons and events of the Western world. OLVS has also developed an Old World & America Answer Key. Science: Capping Our Lady of Victory's elementary-level science program is Science & Living in God's World 8 Text. Continuing in much the same manner -- with a similar format -- as last year's science course, this year's topics are arranged and covered so as to afford the students a good general grounding in a variety of topics before advancing to high school science. Specifically, the 7th and 8th grade science courses are a more rudimentary introduction to many of the topics that will be covered in-depth in the Physical Science course offered in the OLVS 9th grade curriculum. This year's topics include the study of animals and the Animal Kingdom; human physiology and anatomy, with the emphasis on the respiratory and nerve systems; energy and its many forms; and machines and the work they do. Students will continue to be prepared to enter the world as productive members of their community, ready and able to steadfastly defend their Faith and to apply traditional Catholic principles to their everyday lives. Theology: The Augustinian method for teaching religion continues this year with the second book of the Our Quest for Happiness series, Through Christ Our Lord Text. This year, the student will study the Gospels and their accounts of the life of Christ. Students will examine the deeds of love of the Divine Son in redeeming us and restoring hope. Further, this year students will delve into a study of the Mass and the Eucharist. An overview of morality, as well as an examination of the third and fourth commandments, is also covered this year. Through Christ our Lord Answer Key is keyed to the text and available for the regular review questions after each section, as well as for the end-ofchapter review questions. Other books used: The Rosary Novena Booklet, The Way of the Cross Booklet, and The Douay-Rheims New Testament. Math: Saxon Algebra I Text is the suggested text for this year's math course, although students coming to OLVS without having successfully completed Saxon's Algebra , are required to complete that introductory course before tackling Algebra I. There are some important concepts and skills that must be mastered in order to more thoroughly understand the more difficult mathematical processes that will follow in the next couple of years. Saxon Algebra I covers arithmetic of (evaluation of) expressions involving signed numbers, exponents and roots, properties of real numbers, absolute value and equations. Integrated into the text is an extensive amount of Geometric concepts as well. The three-book Saxon Algebra I Set includes: Saxon Algebra I Textbook; Saxon Algebra I Test Forms; Saxon Algebra I Answer Key. Saxon Algebra 1 Solutions Manual is also available, and strongly recommended. Grammar: This grammar and compositon course, part of a series originally published (like Voyages in English) by Loyola University Press, was at one time the standard in Catholic high schools of the United States. The textbook, Correct Writing Text, is used in conjunction with the reference manual, Writing Handbook. Both of these books must be used together so that the students can acquire a thorough understanding of the necessary grammatical rules and concepts. Using the Traditional Catholic Speller 9, the students will also learn the spelling of hundreds of words and their meanings, including Catholic terms. Other book used: Correct Writing Answer Key. Literature: This year the students will be concentrating on perfecting their skills at analyzing literature by identifying (and commenting upon) the literary elements of
character, setting, plot and theme. Students will read, The Scarlet Pimpernel, by Baroness Orczy The year is 1792 during the French Revolution. Daily, tumbrels roll over the cobbled streets of Paris bearing new victims to the insatiable Madame guillotineThus the stage is set for one of the most enthralling novels of historical adventure ever written. The mysterious figure known as the Scarlet Pimpernel, sworn to rescue helpless men, women and children from their doom; his foe, the French agent Chauvelin; and the lovely Lady Marguerite Blakeney, a French exile married to an English lord all play their parts in a suspenseful tale. Another author who was able to do so, while writing in the poetic English of the mid-19th century, was Cardinal Wiseman. His Fabiola, a thrilling story about the persecutions of the early Christians of Rome, has a number of sub-plots with suspenseful twists. Cardinal Wiseman artfully meshes the true history of the early Church, the persecutions endured by the first Christians, and the glorious army of martyrs of the catacombs, into an historical novel, which keeps readers spellbound. Come Rack, Come Rope, by Robert Hugh Benson takes place in England during the 16th century under the rule of Elizabeth I. Families, like the FitzHerberts, heard Mass and received the Sacraments in secret. Concealed places were built especially for the priests so they could hide in an emergency. Families were divided; men were thrown into jail; and neighbor turned against neighbor. A traitor in the midst meant capture, torture and certain death for the undercover priests. There exists also a charming and holy love between a young man and lady, but God comes first! Will he become a priest for God? This real life drama provides vivid descriptions and profound insights into the persecutions of Catholics during the age of the Protestant Reformation. Kidnapped, by Robert Louis Stevenson, assigned to the boys, is set in the aftermath of the Jacobite Rebellion of 1745 and sustains a gripping narrative. David Balfour, a young lowlander who is tricked by his miserly uncle, survives attempted murder, kidnap and shipwreck. In the company of Alan Breck, a Jacobite, he escapes through the Highlands. The Story of the Other Wise Man by Henry van Dyke, is a touching tale of sacrifice and perseverance of the fourth pilgrim (the other wise man), whose great desire to see the Messiah was denied, yet accomplished in the denial. He wanders for years in search of and eventually finds, the one Whom he sought. History: This year's World History is centered on the history of the Catholic Faith as embodied in The Story of the Church Text. For, what is history if not the telling of the story of Christ and His Church? This survey of the world stresses that the roots of the One, True Faith lie in the beginning of the world, the Fall of Man, and his subsequent Redemption. As the publishers state, "To know and to understand the Church is a sacred duty for every Catholic. . . This book has been written for boys and girls with the hope that as they learn the story it tells, their love of Christ in His Church will increase and that a lifelong interest in Church history will be enkindled. The Story of the Church is told in three parts: first in the days of the Roman Empire, then through the Ages of Faith, and finally in Modern Times, Christ in His Church advances down the ages unto the fulfillment of His mission." Other books used: Story of the Church Test Booklet, Story of the Church Test Answer Key. Science: This course is based on the book, Physical Science Text, by Dr. Jay Wile. It was written specifically for the home-schooled student; the writing and presentation style Dr. Wile uses gives the reader the impression that the author is sitting across the kitchen table tutoring one-on-one. The experiments use common, readily available materials, and the author walks the students through each of the labs in a logical easy-
to-follow manner. The text is intended to stimulate new questions that will cause the students to expand his knowledge. Topics covered include: the atmosphere and the weather; the structure of the earth; and an introduction to physics, touching on motion, Newton's Laws, gravity, and astrophysics. This course will help students understand how the entire universe, from atoms to galaxies, is governed and maintained by the infinite power of our God. Physical Science Solutions and Tests contains: (1) answers to the Study Guide found at the end of each module in the text; (2) tests for each module; and (3) answers to each of the modular tests.

The master theme of the Tenth Grade will be to continue to develop in students all of the higher cognitive and affective skills, conforming them to the more complex concepts of the secondary school, and to the challenging task of applying principles, concepts, and ideals in an expanding scope of study than they have had in the elementary grades. Now, students will be obliged to thoroughly develop good study habits to help in the intellectual digestion of more difficult subject matter. Students will begin implementing ways in which they will ultimately discover God's plan for each of them, as well as how to prepare themselves for their vocations. They will work toward becoming productive members of their communities, ready and able to defend their Faith and to apply traditional Catholic principles, no matterwhere their vocation takes them. Theology: This year the students will continue the Quest for Happiness Series, with an emphasis on the salvatory role of the Church, guided by the Holy Ghost. This third book of this series, The Ark and the Dove Text, reveals the love which the Holy Ghost has for us. Students will study the Third Person of the Holy Trinity, the Holy Ghost, as well as the nature, origin, structure and history of the Church. Also discussed will be the sacrament of Penance, and the fifth, sixth, and ninth commandments. The Ark & the Dove Answer Key is a convenient aid for parents or in-home tutors to check over student responses. Also available are The Rosary Novena Booklet and The Way of the Cross Booklet, according to the method of St. Alphonsus Liguori. Algebra II: This year, the student advances to Saxon Algebra II, which includes intermediate algebraic concepts such as: graphical solutions to simultaneous equations, scientific notation, radicals, roots of quadratic equations (including complex roots), properties of real numbers, inequalities and systems of inequalities, logarithms and antilogarithms, exponential equations, basic trigonometric functions, algebra of polynomials, vectors, polar and rectangular coordinate systems, and a wide spectrum of word problems requiring algebra to solve. As with all Saxon math courses, geometry is integrated throughout the program, so that by the end of Saxon Algebra II, all students should be exposed to all of the geometry they would have received in a dedicated geometry course. Saxon Publishers assert that any student who has successfully completed Saxon Algebra II has the necessary tools and skills to score competitively on the SAT and ACT college board tests. Overall, algebra requires a great deal of abstract thought on the part of the student. It will be necessary for the students to work slowly and methodically to learn the rules, theories, and methods of arriving at the abstract answers to these problems. Literature: This year's literature course is an eclectic look at diverse literary genres. By What Authority, by Robert Hugh Benson, takes place during the Protestant Reformation. Sir Nicholas is the rock-solid head of his household and a devout Catholic who helps renegade priests hide from her Majestys men. The reader will find himself
traveling across the English countryside hunting for priests, the next minute witnessing the happenings at the Queen's court. In the midst of all this exists the relationship between a young man and a young lady - one a Catholic, the other a Protestant. Catholic families suffered persecutions of various types. Families were divided; fathers and sons were thrown into jail; and neighbor turned against neighbor. But through it all, the few priests that remained were able to sustain and convert many. Lances of Lynwood by Charlotte M. Yonge is a story of Eustace, the younger brother of Sir Reginald, the lord of Lynwood Castle and its surrounding lands. One heroic act on the battlefield gains him the favor of the Prince of Wales, who raises young Eustace to the level of Knighthood; but with that honor comes responsibility. The youthful Sir Eustace is hurled into the world of men and must now defend his castle, his orphaned nephew, and if he survives, his honor. In all his encounters, he puts into practice the virtuous qualities of a noble knight. As this exciting story ends, Eustace is hailed a brave, stouthearted young Knight. The Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane is a classic novel of war as seen through the eyes of an untested recruit. This book has been praised for its uncanny recreation of the sights, sounds, and sense of actual combat. Struggling against his fears and feelings of cowardice, young Civil War soldier Henry Fleming endures the nightmare of battle as he wrestles with his conflicting emotions. Experiencing his first trials under fire on a woodland battlefield, he comes to manhood and finds peace of mind in this powerful description of war and haunting interpretation of that bloody symbol of bravery the red badge of courage. The Ballad of the White Horse is a poem by G. K. Chesterton about the idealized exploits of the Saxon King Alfred the Great, published in 1911. Written in ballad form, the work is usually considered an epic poem. The poem narrates how Alfred was able to defeat the invading Danes at the Battle of Ethandun by God through the agency of the Virgin Mary. In addition to being a narration of Alfred's militaristic and political accomplishments, it is also considered a Catholic allegory. Chesterton incorporates a significant amount of philosophy into the basic structure of the story. History: This is best described as a hemispheric history, centered on the text, Christ and the America Text, written in the late 1990s by Anne Carroll. Students will learn about the Catholic roots of our country, meet the great Catholic heroes and heroines of North and South America, and learn how the Catholic Church has fared in our hemisphere. All the regions of the Western Hemisphere, including North America, Central America, South America and the Caribbean will be studied. The histories of the United States and other countries in our hemisphere have been deftly intertwined, to show the various relationships and dynamics that entered into the establishment and growth of the diverse nations of the Western Hemisphere. History can be presented from any number of points of view, but, ideally, there is a single interpretation of events, causes, and effects which must be viewed through the lens of a Catholic perspective. Only when we truly understand the past, can we even begin to influence the future. Dr. Carroll does an admirable job of helping the student to understand better what we need to do to help the country we love come closer to God. Other books used: Christ and the Americas Answer Key, Catholics of the Confederacy, Reign of Christ the King. Grammar: The Elegant Essay walks students through the entire essay-building process. From captivating introductions to compelling descriptions and convincing conclusions, students learn to bring their words and their arguments to life. With explanation and practice exercises, it is an excellent extension and refinement of the students writing skills learned to this point. In the Easy Grammar Ultimate Series course, students learn
high school English grammar in a highly efficient program which features 180 daily teaching lessons, lasting 10 minutes each. Great for home school! This book teaches important skills in a very direct and logical progression. In Spelling, using the Traditional Catholic Speller 10, students will again learn to spell hundreds of new words and definitions, including Catholic terms. Biology: This year's science course will be centered on Dr. Jay Wile's Biology Text. Using a common-sense Christian approach to the study of Biology, Dr. Wile introduces the student to both major divisions of biology: botany and zoology, and deftly explains the five Kingdoms, and their subordinate classes. In his inimitable writing style, Dr. Wile gives the reader the impression that he is sitting across the table, tutoring the student one-on-one. The text deals insightfully with the difference between macroevolution and micro-evolution, and shows why Darwinian macro-evolution is simply not possible. Biology Solutions and Tests Book contains: (1) answers to the Study Guide found at the end of each module in the text; (2) tests for each module; and (3) answers to each of the modular tests.

The master theme of the Eleventh Grade will be to encourage students, through the curriculum, to take stock of the higher cognitive and affective skills which they have developed, as they more deftly use these skills in the preparatory stages of not only discovering, but embarking upon, the vocation which God has pre-ordained for them. Students will come to understand more fully just how their abilities and skills can be brought to bear in focusing on the challenging task of applying principles, concepts, and ideals toward the ultimate discovery of God's plan for each of them. Moreover, as they prepare themselves for their vocations, they will work toward becoming productive members of their communities, equipped with all the tools and information to allow them to defend their Faith and apply traditional Catholic principles and values, no matter where their vocation takes them. Theology: In this last year of the Our Quest for Happiness religion series, the discussion of the Four Last Things raises the question of the future, the sacraments of Extreme Unction, Holy Orders, and Matrimony, and of the Apocalypse. The life of the Blessed Mother fits in here most admirably as God presents to us, in her, the perfect example of those who wish to succeed in the quest for happiness, and the perfect model in the practice of all the virtues. This fourth book, Toward the Eternal Commencement Text, was originally written as a 12th grade text, to act as a last inoculation of strength and faith against the ills of the world. But Our Lady of Victory school determined that the current crisis in the Church could best be overcome by a further strengthening of our youngsters in the defense of their Faith. Accordingly, we introduced a dedicated Apologetics course into the senior year curriculum, placing this book, Toward the Eternal Commencement Text, in the 11th Grade. The text helps our juniors look into the future, while dealing beautifully with "The Great Choice," as our teen-aged children prepare, with Our Lord's illumination, to discover their state in life which God has preordained for them. This course gives our young Catholics the principles they need to build a better world. The last unit of the text, Unit V is an introduction to apologetics, in preparation for next year's in-depth course. Other books used: Toward the Eternal Commencement Answer Key, The Rosary Novena Booklet, The Way of the Cross Booklet, The Douay-Rheims New Testament. Advanced Mathematics I: The course is centered around the first half of Saxon's Advanced Math Text, with the second half being covered in the 12th Grade. This course should only be attempted by those students who have successfully completed Saxon Algebra II. General topics covered include: advanced algebra, geometry, trigonometry, discrete mathematics, and mathematical analysis, all interwoven to form a fully integrated text. Specific topics treated in the text include: permutations and combinations, trigonometric identities, inverse trigonometric functions, conic sections, graphs of sinusoids, rectangular and polar representation of complex numbers, theorems, matrices, and determinants. A rigorous treatment of Euclidean geometry is presented, as well. Word problems are developed throughout the problems sets and become progressively more elaborate. The graphing calculator is used to graph functions and perform data analysis. Conceptually-oriented problems prepare students
for college entrance exams. The student edition contains answers to odd-numbered problems. The 3 book set includes: Saxon Advanced Math Text, Saxon Advanced Math Answer Key, and Saxon Advanced Math Test Booklet. Saxon Advanced Math Solutions Manual is also available, and strongly recommended. Geometry: Harold Jacobs's Geometry created a revolution in the approach to teaching this subject, one that gave rise to many ideas now seen in the NCTM Standards and in many current texts. Since its publication, nearly one million students have used this legendary text. Suitable for either classroom use or self-paced study, it uses innovative discussions, cartoons, anecdotes, examples, and exercises that unfailingly capture and hold student interest. This edition is the Jacobs for a new generation. It has all the features that have kept the text in class by itself for nearly 3 decades, all in a thoroughly revised, full-color presentation that shows today's students how fun geometry can be. The Jacobs Geometry Text remains proof-based although the presentation is in the less formal paragraph format. The approach focuses on guided discovery to help students develop geometric intuition. Other books used: Jacobs Geometry Enhanced Teachers Guide, and Jacobs Geometry Test Bank. Public Speaking: As Grammar/Composition is required each year, all students must take this 11th Grade Grammar course. Through this course students will develop their abilities in verbal persuasion. Ultimately, they will be able to present oral arguments for their Faith, in support of apologetics. They will soon be competing with thousands of others for jobs and advancement, along with meeting new friends. To develop the ability of expressing themselves well, they will study the textbook, Basic Speech Experiences Text, along with a very special book on political communication, Slightly to the Right, which will give students unique knowledge on how to discuss controversial subjects with "liberals and fuzzy minded friends." As in all of the OLVS courses, students will learn to spell hundreds of new words and their meanings, including Catholic terms, all of which will be found in the Traditional Catholic Speller 11 booklet. Literature: In the first quarter, the students will read, Great Expectations, by Charles Dickens. A terrifying encounter with an escaped convict on the wild Kent marshes; a summons to meet the bitter, decaying Miss Havisham and her beautiful, cold-hearted ward, Estella; the sudden generosity of a mysterious benefactor these form a series of events that changes the orphaned Pips life forever, and he eagerly abandons his humble origins to begin a new life as a gentleman. Dickenss haunting late novel depicts Pips education and development through adversity as he discovers the true nature of his great expectations. Next, the student will read, Silas Marner by George Eliot (pen name for Mary Ann (Marian) Evans. George Eliot combined a formidable intelligence with imaginative sympathy and acute poser of observation, and became one of the greatest and most influential of English novelists. In Silas Marner, she combines humour, rich symbolism and pointed social criticism to create an unsentimental but affectionate portrait of rural life. During the last semester, the students will read The Portable Dante. As a philosopher, Dante wedded classical methods of inquiry to a Christian faith. As an autobiographer, he looked unsparingly at his own failures to depict universal moral struggles. As a visionary, he dared draw maps of Hell, with Purgatory and Paradise, and populate all three realms with recognizable human beings. In all of these things, Dante Alighieri paved the way for modern literature, while
creating verse and prose that remain unparalleled for formal elegance, intellectual depth, and emotional grandeur. The Portable Dante captures the scope and fire of Dantes genius as thoroughly as any single volume can. It contains complete verse translations of Dantes masterwork, The Divine Comedy, plus a bibliography, notes, and an introduction by the eminent scholar and translator Mark Musa. History: West vs. Communism: This year's course is entitled "The Free World vs. Communism". Merging on both a history and a civics course, this year's social studies is a survey of the antagonism between East and West during most of the 20th Century. Notwithstanding the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, and the 1991 implosion of the former Soviet Union, we must still be aware that hundreds of millions of people are still enslaved by Communism in Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America. This course will impart to students important information about not only how their government was formed, how it operates, and how they can actively participate in it, but, of equal significance, students will learn what evil forces have threatened (and to a certain extent, continue to threaten) the existence of their God-given freedoms. That knowledge will fortify them for the intelligent battle they must wage no matter where they live. The Catholic Church, and many patriots, have tried valiantly to warn us of the devilish threat from socialism and communism which has permeated the whole world. We will learn of that threat by studying The Naked Communist, by W. Cleon Skousen, a former F.B.I. agent, and the anti-Communist classic, Masters of Deceit, by J. Edgar Hoover, the former Director of the F.B.I. Other books used: Pope Pius XIs Encyclical on Atheistic Communism, With God in Russia, 1917 Red Banners White Mantle. Chemistry: This year's science course will be centered on Dr. Jay Wile's Chemistry Text. As a Christian scientist whose area of expertise is nuclear chemistry, Dr. Wile introduces the students to general concepts of measurements and units, as well as reviews of energy, heat, and temperature. Then, in his informal and affable writing style, by which Dr. Wile gives the reader the impression that he is sitting across the table, tutoring the students one-on-one, he delves into atoms, molecules, matter classification and changes, stoichiometry, atomic and molecular structure, and numerous other fascinating topics. A rudimentary laboratory equipment set is available from the publisher at a modest price, or equipment can be bought separately for even more economy. Labs are thoughtfully designed, and often use nothing more than household materials or items that can readily be found at a pharmacy. Chemistry Solutions and Tests Book contains: (1) answers to the Study Guide found at the end of each module in the text; (2) tests for each module; and (3) answers to each of the modular tests.

Students will understand more fully just how their abilities and skills can be exploited to focus on the challenging task of applying principles, concepts, and ideals toward the ultimate discovery of God's plan for each of them. Moreover, as they prepare themselves for their vocations, they will work toward becoming productive members of their communities, equipped with all the tools and information to allow them to defend their Faith and apply traditional Catholic principles and values, no matter where their vocation leads them. Philosophy: This year's course will be an in-depth follow-up to last year's introduction to apologetics. This course is a philosophic defense and explanation of the Catholic Religion, presenting a clear and logical statement of the reason behind the Catholic Religion. Every Catholic has a duty to investigate the reasonableness of his religion and to be prepared to explain it to non-Catholics. The students who successfully complete this course will be sufficiently prepared not only to defend his Faith, but also to explain it to those good-willed individuals who truly desire more information. In order to train our students to argue logically and persuasively, and to answer common questions proposed by Catholics and non-Catholics alike, we use both Apologetics Text by Monsignor Glenn, and the accompanying Apologetics Study Guide (Take Off Your Shoes). Since Apologetics is a verbal or oral discipline, students will be occasionally required to make tapes of assignments for OLVS tutor review. Other books used: The Rosary Novena Booklet, The Way of the Cross Booklet. Advanced Mathematics II This course covers the second half of the Saxon Advanced Mathematics text, the first half of which was covered in the Eleventh Grade. This course should be attempted by only those students who have completed Saxon Algebra I, and the first half of the Saxon Advanced Mathematics course. Topics include: parabolas, binomial expansions, trigonometric identities, logarithms, exponential equations, equations of the hyperbola and ellipse, convergent geometric series, matrix addition and multiplications, graphing of factored polynomial functions, inverse matrices, use of the graphing calculator, and much more. The student edition contains answers to oddnumbered problems. The 3 book set includes: Saxon Advanced Math Text, Saxon Advanced Math Answer Key, and Saxon Advanced Math Test Booklet. Saxon Advanced Math Solutions Manual is also available, and strongly recommended. Literature: This year, the students will read Initiation by Robert Hugh Benson, the story of Sir Neville Fannings conversion. Denying the cross again and again, he couldnt bear to suffer even though at every turn Our Lord constantly called him to Himself. His initiation (submitting to Gods will) is a beautiful story of how the surrender was
asked and then won in the end. Ivanhoe, by Sir Walter Scott, takes place after the Norman Conquest, at a time when people truly believed that the will of God was the final authority among men. A fascinating tale of the young noble, Ivanhoe, returned home from the Crusades to claim his inheritance and love of his childhood friend but nothing good comes without struggle. He becomes involved in the struggle for the crown and befriends Robin Hood and his merry men, and is forced to trial by combat. The Virginian is a novel by Owen Wister. This is the story of a folk-hero who becomes successful because of individualistic virtues and not because of class or family inheritance. It is the first fully realized cowboy hero in American literature, a nearmythic figure whose idealized image has profoundly influenced our national consciousness. Beowulf - a new verse translation by Seamus Heaney. Composed towards the end of the first millennium, Beowulf is the classic Northern epic of a heros triumphs as a young warrior and his fated death as a defender of his people. The poem is about encountering the monstrous, defeating it and then learning from that struggle to live on despite adversities and follow the high and difficult path of heroic virtue until death. It is not hard to draw parallels in this story to the dilemmas of life, particularly in the twentieth century, but the poem also transcends such considerations, telling us psychological and spiritual truths that are permanent and liberating. Grammar/Research Paper: This final year, students will focus on the task of thoroughly researching a subject, completing each necessary step, one at a time, in the compilation and writing of a term paper, then to present it in an attractive way. To develop these skills, the students will utilize and study the text, The Research Paper Text. The Research Paper Answer Key is also available. The students will also read and study, Catholic Book of Character and Success by Edward F. Garesche. Through this treatise, the Catholic adolescent will learn, among other things, how to use criticism prudently, how to discipline the imagination, and how to tell the difference between pleasure and happiness. Abounding in wisdom, the advice proffered in these pages will help readers deal with practical problems faced by all those who try to genuinely live according to the noble precepts of our Holy Catholic Faith. In Spelling, using the Traditional Catholic Speller 12, the students will again learn hundreds of words and their meanings, including many words of exclusively Catholic or ecclesiastical significance. Civics: To become good adult citizens, students must learn about the basic functions of government. In addition, as Catholics, they must understand their duties and responsibilities to authority in general, and to society as a whole. They should further comprehend the position of the Church regarding moral exercise of government. Students will come away from this course with a firm understanding of their obligations to be fulfilled as citizens. In order to accomplish this, Our Lady of Victory's staff has written a timely and updated Catholic Civics book entitled Christian Citizenship Text. It will be read and studied in conjunction with Mr. Michael Davies' booklet, The Reign of Christ the King, and with The Measuring Tape Text, by Mr. Frank Denke. This Civics course will prepare our prospective graduates for living their Catholic Faith in the world, without being of the world. As such, it is a required course for graduation from OLVS. Other books used: Christian Citizenship Answer Key, Measuring Tape Answer Key, Catholic Action for Christ Our King Text, and Catholic Action for Christ Our King Answer Key. Health Science: In various science courses previously studied, the students have received small portions of scientific information that pertained to his own body and
health. The students will now study more directly the subject of personal health; being encouraged to develop good health habits which should be of great benefit to the students as they grow into adulthood and become completely responsible for their own health. After all, as Catholics we know that our bodies are temples of the Holy Ghost. The textbook, **Review Text in Health Text, was written by a religious brother and a sister. Additionally, a basic knowledge of first aid will be gained by the study of the booklet First Aid Essentials. Other books used: Review Text in Health Answer Key.
