The ETM9800 is an industrial terminal designed for Machine to
Machine operations. t incorporates the Siemens HC25 HSDPA
Wireless Module which has Tri-band UMTS/HSDPA, Quad-Band
GSM/GPRS/EDGE capability. The ETM9800 has the versatility to
operate on virtually any GSM or UMTS network. The HSDPA
capability means that the ETM9800 can download at speeds up
to 3.6 Mbit/s*. The ETM9800 is perfect for replacing legacy
CDMA modems. Typical applications are:
Security;
Automated Meter Reading (Telemetry);
nterface to data acquisition/data logging systems;
Broadcasting/updating multi media files;
nterfacing with alarm and control applications.

The USB Port features a USB "B Socket. The interface is USB
full speed (12 Mbps). While the USB Port is active the device will
not enter sleep mode. The Serial port will not operate while the
USB port is active. The USB Port interfaces directly with the
HC25 Module (see block diagram page 2), bypassing the MCU.

The RS232 Port is the interface for the application software and
connection to the PC. AT commands are used to communicate
with the terminal. The RS232 interface is implemented as a 9-pin
D-Sub socket with a screw fitting. Please see the diagram and
table below for specific pin allocations.

The ETM9800 Terminal has a standard FME (male) Antenna
Plug on the end of a 6CM cable.
Special models are available with an SMA Female plug connec-
tor.

5lM Card
There is a SM card connector on the bottom side of the
ETM9800 Terminal. You
need a valid SM (USM
for 3G) card to operate
the GSM/GPRS/UMTS/
HSDPA feature. t re-
quires a regular 3V SM
card.

1. You will need a serial cable to connect the RS232 inter-
face of the ETM9800. The other end will be connected to
serial COM port of your computer (a Serial/USB Adapter
may be used if you computer does not have a serial port).
2. Fit a suitable FME antenna to the antenna connector of
the ETM9800. (Or SMA Antenna if you have SMA Model)
3. nstall a data enabled SM card for enabled for 3G opera-
tion and ensure that the SM Card is suitable for your ap-
plication. The figures on page 8 illustrate how to open the
SM card holder, and how to place the SM card.
4. Connect the power supply. (The unit accepts a broad
range of voltages from 6- 35VDC)
5. The ETM9800 is pre configured as follows (this applies to
serial port onlyNo pre configuration if USB port used)
AT^SCFG="URC/DstIfc","usb0-mdm" (set modem interface to out-
put unsolicited result codes-URC).
AT&C1 (Set Data Carrier Detect (DCD) to ON only when data carrier
signal is present)
AT^SLED=2 (Set LED on terminal to Flash when the terminal is regis-
tered on the network).
AT&D0 (Set Terminal to ignore Data Terminal Ready status)
ATS0=2 (Enable automatic answering after 2 rings)
AT+CRC=1 (Set result codes for incoming calls to extended format).

When installing via the USB Port your will need a USB type B ca-
ble. The USB interfaces directly with the HC25 Module (i.e. by-
passes the MCU). Upon connection to your computer and power-
ing the terminal you will be asked to install the drivers.
During the installation, the HC25 USB interface will be assigned
two virtual COM ports, one for the virtual modem port and one for
the virtual application port. Windows will automatically allocate
the next available COM port to each virtual interface.

HC25 is installed as a composite device that comprises three virtual
devices, one by one added to your Windows XP system:

Siemens HC25 USB Com Port driver
Siemens HC25 Wireless Ethernet Adapter driver
Siemens HC25 HSDPA USB Modem driver

During the installation, the HC25 USB interface will be assigned
two virtual COM ports, one for the virtual modem port and one
for the virtual application port. Windows will automatically
allocate the next available COM port to each virtual interface.
Once the Connection Manager installation has completed
Windows detects the HC25 as a new USB composite device.
The Found New Hardware Wizard will start. Click

The Terminal is controlled and programmed by means of AT
commands. The AT command structure correspond to the Sie-
mens HC25 module used in this terminal. The AT commands
specification can be obtained from ETM Pacific by emailing
info@etmpacific.com.au or telephone +61 2 9956 7377.
Simple AT commands are illustrated below:
ATI = returns the module name and firmware version.
At+CPN=xxxx (this will allow you to input the SM Card PN Number)
AT+CSQ (will return current signal strength e.g. CSQ 8,99 where 8 is the signal 99 is
service quality).
ATDxxxxxxxxxx; (dial a voice call where xxx = number dialed (use area code) note
the ; on the end of the number this is mandatory for a voice call with the HC25 Module.
ATH to Hangup the call. (AT+CHUP to hang up a voice call)
AT&V will return the current settings for the terminal.
AT+IPR=XXXX (where XXXX=port speed) will change the port speed (e.g. AT+PR=2400
sets the port speed to 2400 bps). Please note that this command must not be entered by
manually typing into the terminal program window. t must be entered as a single com-
mand using ADD facility on Terminal 27 program or similar facility on Hyperterminal.
1reublesheetlng
SIM Pin not enteredthe device will not register with the net-
work until the SM Pin is entered. To enter a SM PN number
use the AT+CPN=xxxx command where xxxx = pin number.
UMTS or GSM SignaI Strength too low-some location/antenna
characteristics may prevent the unit from registering on the net-
work. Use AT+CSQ to evaluate signal strength. The first digit
must not be lower than 5 but ideally should be above 20 for good
signal strength. Think about changing location/antenna or both to
