Fuelling the Economy with Clean Energy: Green Party of BC Statement of Intent The Green Party of British Columbia

is dedicated to getting the province off oil, gas and coal. We believe that a vibrant and thriving power generation industry based on geothermal, solar and wind can eliminate the need to import coal-based power. We believe, equally, that conservation (building codes, industrial reform and behavioural change) will move us toward energy self-sufficiency and an emission- free BC without resorting to nuclear energy or fossil fuels like natural gas to create energy. Fast Facts: Transportation accounts for 37% of BCs greenhouse gases. Annual budget of $220 million would finance a 10 year retrofit housing program and generate 20,000 jobs. One wind turbine (2 MW) generates annual power usage of 500 BC homes. 100 MW wind energy project can replace 215,000 tonnes of CO2 comparable to removing 45,000 cars off the road every year. Current government aims to export 4 trillion cubic feet of natural gas annually, BCs current reserves (33 trillion) would expire within 8 years. Gas royalties are only 0.3% of BC budget ($157million) and represents 0.1% of current employment.

A Clean and Green Environment The Green Party of British Columbia would re-evaluate all river-based energy generation projects pending stricter environmental assessment. We would phase out all power imports from fossil fuels or GHG emitting sources. We would require methane capture and power generation plants at all wastewater and landfill sites. BC Greens would restore public ownership in the case of the Nechako/Kemano generation system. BC Greens would require that BCs short and long-term energy needs be fully met before foreign energy sales take place. BC Greens would prohibit the use of food products, other than local food waste, for the production of fuels. Energy Delivery The Green Party of British Columbia would halt consideration of the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline project (Alberta Tar Sands to Kitimat) and we would reject any expansion of the Kinder-Morgan pipeline from Alberta to Vancouver. The BC Greens would establish a permanent ban on crude oil tankers along our provinces west coast to protect our fisheries, tourism, coastal communities and natural ecosystems. Vehicular emissions Transportation accounts for 37% of BCs greenhouse gases. The Greens would regulate vehicle carbon emissions to fall by 85% by 2030, using tax incentives and regulatory standards. We would introduce an automobile environmental carbon tax.
